KEY GAME INFORMATION
FLORIDA: SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - When the lockout ended and last season started for the Florida Panthers, there was so much promise.
A banner commemorating the team's division title was unfurled on opening night, the franchise's star-in-waiting scored on his first NHL shot and everything looked bright.
That good feeling disappeared in a hurry. The Panthers went from celebrating to collapsing without warning, and wound up finishing the season having given up more goals than any other team while being tied for last in goal-scoring - and posting the worst record in the NHL.

``It wasn't pleasant,'' Panthers captain Ed Jovanovski said.
One disaster after another - injuries and scoring droughts, mostly - plagued Florida last season, and the Panthers haven't forgotten. When camp opened earlier this month, the Panthers talked of both a need to move ahead but the necessity to remember how painful it was to be out of the playoff chase so early last season.

``I think we all pretty well know that we don't want to have another disaster like last year,'' Panthers general manager Dale Tallon said. ``Guys are professional. They should be able to figure it out and if they don't figure it out, I'll figure it out for them.''
Panthers coach Kevin Dineen said his team cannot ignore the memory of last season's freefall. Not counting goals awarded in shootouts, Florida skaters scored 109 times last year, tied with Nashville for the worst total in the league.

``We had to acknowledge what happened as a group. We had to understand that there was ownership by all of us, from the GM to the coaching to the players and I think we all did that,'' Dineen said. ``I think the commitment was made to be better. There's been some hard decisions made this summer ... but we need to put a team and a style of that gives us the best chance to win.''
Changes were made, such as letting longtime Florida forward Stephen Weiss leave through free agency, and bringing Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Tim Thomas into the organization as a veteran influence. Thomas and Jacob Markstrom figure to get the bulk of the work in net early.

WASHINGTON: ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - The patches of white in Alex Ovechkin's black hair are growing more pronounced.
He turned 28 this month, he is the captain of the Washington Capitals, and while the Russian wing is coming off a third NHL MVP trophy, what he does not have at this point is much in the way of playoff success.

``Of course it's hard (to) realize you're getting older. And, of course, you always want to be 24, 23 years old,'' Ovechkin said. ``But it's impossible. So you just move on.''
Eventually embracing the shift from left to right wing at the behest of rookie coach Adam Oates, Ovechkin led the Capitals into the postseason for the sixth consecutive time last spring. What also happened to Ovechkin and Washington for the sixth consecutive time: a first- or second-round exit.

``You can't say, like, `We're going to win the Stanley Cup. Of course, we would love to win the Stanley Cup. ... We're going to try to do it,'' Ovechkin said. ``But we just have to play every game like it's (our) last game.''
Very little has changed about the roster in the four-plus months since a 5-0 home loss in Game 7 of Washington's first-round series against the New York Rangers. Ask around the organization about what the expectations or aims should be for the Capitals during the 2013-14 season and, not surprisingly, the responses will vary.
Owner Ted Leonsis just hopes his team doesn't take for granted that it will reach the playoffs.
General manager George McPhee said: ``The objective always is to make the playoffs to give yourself a chance. And we'd love to go deep, and we'd love to win a cup.''
And forward Brooks Laich made quite clear his feeling that no one associated with the club should be satisfied by merely making it deeper into the playoffs than the Capitals have in the recent past.

``We're not looking to just get through the second round. If we do that and we go home ... after the third round, we're not going home and patting ourselves on the back,'' Laich said. ``The expectation within that locker room is to win the Stanley Cup.''
The Capitals open at the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 1.

*Panthers-Capitals Preview* ===========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Florida (3-7-2) at Washington (5-7-0), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Washington Capitals found a way to record their best scoring effort of the season without Alex Ovechkin.

Now they stand a good chance of building on that performance against the struggling Florida Panthers - especially if their superstar is able to return.

Ovechkin likely will be a game-time decision Saturday night when the Capitals return home seeking their eighth straight win over the Panthers.

After struggling to generate much offense in a 5-2 loss at Calgary on Saturday and a 3-2 loss at Vancouver two days later, Washington (6-7-0) wrapped up a 3-2-0 road trip with a 7-0 rout of Philadelphia on Friday.

Joel Ward notched his first career hat trick for the Capitals, who had been 0-4-0 when Ovechkin failed to score.

Ovechkin did not play because of an upper-body injury after crashing into the net against the Canucks, but coach Adam Oates said his star winger might play Saturday. He led the league with 32 goals on the way to the Hart Trophy last season and ranks among the league leaders with 10 this year.

He's been particularly productive against the Panthers, scoring at least one goal in seven straight meetings and totaling 14 points. Ovechkin had three goals and an assist in the most recent matchup, a 4-3 road victory April 6.

Washington has won each of those seven games, outscoring Florida by a combined 32-12 margin.

If Ovechkin can't go, Eric Fehr is expected to stay at right wing, joining Nicklas Backstrom and Martin Erat on the top line. Fehr and Erat each had two assists Friday, while Backstrom had two goals and an assist.

"We worked as a team," said Backstrom, who has six assists in his last three games versus Florida (3-8-2). "We scored on our chances. That's what you have to do, especially when you have a good goal-scorer out of the lineup."

Following his second-period score against the Flyers, Jason Chimera will try to extend his career-best four-game goal streak. He has four goals and nine points during this hot stretch.

The Panthers lost their fourth straight Friday, falling 4-0 to St. Louis. It was the fifth loss in six games for Florida, which has allowed an Eastern Conference-high 46 goals.

"It's disappointing for all of us. Everybody feels bad about it," coach Kevin Dineen said. "The effort wasn't good enough to compete against one of the top teams in the NHL."

Dineen may have no choice but to give Scott Clemmensen his first start of the season after Jacob Markstrom surrendered four goals on 23 shots Friday. Clemmensen, however, has allowed 10 goals in dropping his last two starts against Washington.

Florida hasn't left its goalies very much room for error, ranking near the bottom of the league with 1.92 goals per game and going 1 for 18 on the power play during a 1-5-2 stretch.

It isn't likely to get any easier against a Washington team that has killed off 30 straight short-handed situations.

Although Braden Holtby is coming off a shutout, he's likely to give way to Michal Neuvirth in the second of back-to-back contests.

Neuvirth, who has given up eight goals while dropping his two starts, is 0-3-0 despite a 2.67 goals-against average in his last four against Florida.

The Capitals averaged 5.5 goals in their four-game sweep of the Panthers last season.
