| |  | CAROLINA: RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Carolina Hurricanes could have an easier time filling their arena this season - and a tougher time getting back to the playoffs.
The NHL's realignment meant the end of the Southeast Division and placed the Hurricanes into the new Metropolitan Division.
A division packed with some of the league's most popular teams - Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, both New York teams, New Jersey and Washington - might lead to bigger crowds.
But it also figures to make ending their irksome postseason drought a much bigger challenge.
``It's going to be tough. It's a good division,'' defenseman Justin Faulk said. ``Obviously, there's a lot of teams that are pretty good. ... But we're looking forward to it. Every team's good in the league.
``I don't think you go into any game thinking you can just win every game,'' he added. ``Every night, anyone can win, and I think we're pretty confident with the group that we have in here to do a pretty good job.''
Since winning its only Stanley Cup in 2006, Carolina has reached the playoffs just once, in 2009. Among teams in the current configuration of the Eastern Conference, only Toronto and Columbus have not made the postseason since then.
That hasn't exactly been easy for the players to digest, goalie Cam Ward said.
``You can already sense the attitude. ... Guys are hungry and excited to get things going,'' Ward said. | | WASHINGTON: ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - The patches of white in Alex Ovechkin's black hair are growing more pronounced.
He turned 28 this month, he is the captain of the Washington Capitals, and while the Russian wing is coming off a third NHL MVP trophy, what he does not have at this point is much in the way of playoff success.
``Of course it's hard (to) realize you're getting older. And, of course, you always want to be 24, 23 years old,'' Ovechkin said. ``But it's impossible. So you just move on.''
Eventually embracing the shift from left to right wing at the behest of rookie coach Adam Oates, Ovechkin led the Capitals into the postseason for the sixth consecutive time last spring. What also happened to Ovechkin and Washington for the sixth consecutive time: a first- or second-round exit.
``You can't say, like, `We're going to win the Stanley Cup. Of course, we would love to win the Stanley Cup. ... We're going to try to do it,'' Ovechkin said. ``But we just have to play every game like it's (our) last game.''
Very little has changed about the roster in the four-plus months since a 5-0 home loss in Game 7 of Washington's first-round series against the New York Rangers. Ask around the organization about what the expectations or aims should be for the Capitals during the 2013-14 season and, not surprisingly, the responses will vary.
Owner Ted Leonsis just hopes his team doesn't take for granted that it will reach the playoffs.
General manager George McPhee said: ``The objective always is to make the playoffs to give yourself a chance. And we'd love to go deep, and we'd love to win a cup.''
And forward Brooks Laich made quite clear his feeling that no one associated with the club should be satisfied by merely making it deeper into the playoffs than the Capitals have in the recent past.
``We're not looking to just get through the second round. If we do that and we go home ... after the third round, we're not going home and patting ourselves on the back,'' Laich said. ``The expectation within that locker room is to win the Stanley Cup.''

The Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes are working out some early season kinks, and the former Southeast Division rivals are hoping a win Wednesday night will give them firmer footing in the new-look Metropolitan Division.
The Capitals (1-2-0) have been idle since a 2-1 defeat at Dallas on Saturday. Alex Ovechkin continued his quick start with his team-high fourth goal, but Washington has been plagued by defensive breakdowns and been outscored 10-3 while playing at even strength.
"We had lots of chances - lots of crossbars and posts," said Ovechkin, who has scored on the power play in all three contests and has 24 goals and 65 points in 52 games against Carolina.
The time off has allowed coach Adam Oates to evaluate some of his younger players, with 19-year-old defenseman Connor Carrick drawing most of his scrutiny - and some praise - in the early going.
"I think the one thing we're conscious of is are we hurting his learning curve, has he stopped learning because he's in survival mode," Oates said of Carrick, one of two teenagers on the team along with forward Tom Wilson. "When I watch them play, they don't look like 19 year olds. They make mistakes, but I haven't seen a 19-year-old mistake yet."
Oates is also hoping Washington's second line of Brooks Laich, Mikael Grabovski and Troy Brouwer found some cohesion with the extra time to practice. Grabovski has proven potent on the power play, totaling two goals and two assists, and Laich knows his trio must back up Ovechkin's line for Washington to be successful.
"If you stop the top line, you have a good chance of winning," Laich said. "They have a little bit more depth but I think our depth is even greater and our special teams should do the job and should help us all get a win."
Despite a 4.48 goals-against average through three games, Braden Holtby likely will start in net. He went 3-1-0 with a 1.75 GAA and a shutout versus Carolina last season.
The Hurricanes (1-1-1) are trying to regroup after losing 5-2 at Pittsburgh on Tuesday night. They overcame a two-goal deficit to tie the game at 2 with 16:47 left on Nathan Gerbe's goal, only to give up three unanswered tallies in an eight-minute span as ex-Hurricane Jussi Jokinen recorded a hat trick.
"It's a lesson for us that we have to play for 60 minutes," coach Kirk Muller said. "It's every inch, every play you do is important. These good teams, they force you to perform on every shift and we have to sustain it every time we're on the ice."
Gerbe and Radek Dvorak have accounted for four of Carolina's six goals, while brothers Eric and Jordan Staal have combined for one goal and a minus-4 rating.
Carolina yielded two power-play goals in three chances Tuesday after killing off all five penalties in its first two games.
Washington won the last three games between the teams last season and four of five overall in 2012-13 en route to the Southeast title.
