KEY GAME INFORMATION
DALLAS: DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Stars are starting over in their quest to end the longest playoff drought in franchise history.
There's a new general manager in Jim Nill, who hired a new coach in Lindy Ruff and overhauled the roster.
Ruff was the longest-tenured coach in the NHL when Buffalo fired him in the middle of last season. Now, he's trying to get the Stars back to the playoffs almost 15 years after he faced them in the Stanley Cup finals in 1999. Dallas won that title.
The biggest addition was Tyler Seguin, a two-time Stanley Cup finalist and one-time champion with Boston.
Forward Jamie Benn and goalie Kari Lehtonen are among the familiar faces for Dallas heading into the opener Oct. 3 against Florida.
VANCOUVER:
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Like it or not, there is a new culture in Vancouver.
Whether the new atmosphere surrounding the Canucks leads the franchise to its long-awaited first Stanley Cup championship remains to be seen.
But coach John Tortorella is sure going to try.
Following five division championships, two Presidents trophies, for the league's most points, and a Stanley Cup finals appearance in seven years under Alain Vigneault, Vancouver brass determined the Canucks needed a tougher voice. So Vigneault, the franchise leader in wins, was fired May 22 and replaced by John Tortorella, himself fired by the New York Rangers May 29.
Tortorella comes with an edge - he can be hard on the media, and often calls out his players in press conferences - but he wins, and that's what Vancouver needs. He won a Stanley Cup in 2004 behind Tampa Bay's bench, and took the Rangers to the Eastern Conference finals in 2012.

*Stars-Canucks Preview* =======================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Dallas (10-7-2) at Vancouver (11-7-3), 8:00 p.m. EDT

While a lack of production has the Vancouver Canucks mired in their roughest stretch of the season, an offensive outburst helped the Dallas Stars continue their road surge.

The Canucks look to avoid a fourth straight loss while trying to keep the Stars from a sixth consecutive road victory Sunday.

Vancouver (11-7-3) posted a pair of four-goal games in winning two of three to open November. However, the Canucks have since been outscored 10-3, managing one goal in each game during an 0-2-1 slide.

Two of those goals have come from defensemen, and star Daniel Sedin is in danger of going five straight games without a point for the first time since March 2012.

The Canucks have recorded at least 35 shots in each of the last two, and led 1-0 at home Thursday before San Jose tied the game with 65 seconds left in regulation and won 2-1 on Dan Boyle's power-play goal in overtime.

"Sometimes you're on the wrong end of these kind of games," said defenseman Kevin Bieksa, who recorded his first goal. "It's early in the season. You don't want to get too down on yourself, but we deserved those two points."

Though Bieksa's goal came on the power play, the Canucks rank near the bottom of the league converting 10.9 percent of their opportunities.

Vancouver's killed off a league-high 88.6 percent of its penalties, and opponents went 0 for 22 on the power-play in the previous seven games before Boyle beat Roberto Luongo for the winner.

"You're not going to win every game you play great, and sometimes you don't deserve to win and you're going to win," Luongo said. "That's the way the NHL is. I think the main thing is we can't put our heads down."

Though Dallas (10-7-2) is converting 11.9 percent of its power-play chances and is 2 for 24 with the man advantage in the last six games, it's totaled 23 goals while winning five of those contests - all on the road. Tyler Seguin had four goals with an assist and linemate Jamie Benn added five assists with a goal during Thursday's 7-3 win at Calgary.

The Stars, who averaged 2.4 goals while losing five of their first seven road contests, last won six straight away from home Feb. 21-March 13, 2012.

"Lately we've had some success on the road and I think it is because we are playing a simple game, and playing the right way," Benn told the NHL's official website.

Benn has three goals in the last four road games, and has recorded 16 of his 22 points away from home. Seguin also has 22 points, with 17 earned on the road. He's scored half of his team-leading 12 goals in the last three games overall.

"Like most teams, you don't often find one guy up in the (league point) standings, it's usually two guys that work well together," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "Those two guys have had chemistry ever since camp."

Dallas has won two of the last three in Vancouver, scoring nine goals in those victories. Benn has a goal in two straight games against the Canucks, and five points in his last four.

Including the postseason, Sedin has six goals and eight assists in his last 10 home games versus Dallas.
