KEY GAME INFORMATION
NASHVILLE: NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Making the playoffs has become so automatic for the Nashville Predators that they didn't react well to finishing below .500 for the first time in a decade.
They went shopping in a very big way hoping to make sure thatdoesn't happen again.
The Predators opened free agency signing five of the seven players they added on the first day. Right wing Viktor Stalberg from Stanley Cup champ Chicago is the key addition, and they also added Eric Nystrom, and Matt Hendricks and center Matt Cullen, who helped Carolina win the Stanley Cup in 2006.
"It shows all the commitment," captain Shea Weber said. "They made those moves, and they addressed the needs we have. They filled some spots, and obviously everyone's going to see what those guys are capable of. And we're going to see what they can do in the locker room as well."
Nashville will be looking for its eighth playoff berth in a decade this season trying to bounce back from a 16-23-9 record that put them 14th in the Western Conference.
"We feel like we're back to having the depth and the pieces to do what we need to do," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said.
The Predators will need scoring from the new players.
They averaged just 2.27 goals per game last season, tying Florida for the worst scoring average in the NHL. Stalberg is expected to be the biggest addition if he can prove that all he needed was more playing time after struggling to find ice time behind the offensive stars in Chicago. He tied for fifth in goals in Chicago despite ranking 20th in minutes per game last season.
"All the guys in the locker room expect us to be back in the playoffs this year and to make a run," Stalberg said. "We got what it takes in here. It's a matter of putting it all together and finding a way to win hockey games."
TORONTO:
TORONTO (AP) - Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis was content with his labors when he met with reporters in an offseason July press conference.
Just 53 days earlier, his team blew a three-goal lead in the third period of a Game 7 of vs. Boston. Instead of basking in the glow of Toronto's first playoff appearance since 2003-04, Nonis had to ponder what went wrong in that first-round exit, and what needed to be done to make sure it didn't happen again.
So, he traded for Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Bernier and Chicago Blackhawks center Dave Bolland, and signed New Jersey Devils right wing David Clarkson to a seven-year, $36.75 million free agent contract.
Suddenly, a good Maple Leafs team that had a bad ending, was a better team with renewed vigor.

``I've done what I can do,'' Nonis said. ``We're pretty happy. I think we'll be pretty competitive. I can tell you (coach Randy Carlyle) is happy with the options we have in a lot of areas.''
Toronto opens vs. Montreal on Oct. 1.

*Predators-Maple Leafs Preview* ===============================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Nashville (10-9-2) at Toronto (13-7-1), 7:00 p.m. EDT

While the loss of Pekka Rinne certainly showed in the weeks following his injury, the Nashville Predators appear to have found a short-term solution between the pipes.

Red-hot rookie Marek Mazanec is likely to get another start Thursday night, though he'll have to face a Toronto Maple Leafs team that seeks its longest home winning streak in almost seven years.

Although they've allowed an average of 2.9 goals on the season, the Central Division-worst Predators (10-9-2) had given up 4.0 per game in their first nine after Rinne went down with a hip infection on Oct. 24.

Nashville, however, has looked like a much different club the past two contests behind Mazanec, who stopped 66 of 68 shots in consecutive wins over Chicago and Detroit.

In only his fourth career start, Mazanec finished with 27 saves in a 2-0 road win over the Red Wings on Tuesday. The 22-year-old also became the youngest netminder in franchise history to post a shutout and the second-quickest goalie in club history to record his first shutout.

Mazanec is 2-2-0 with a 2.45 goals-against average in his five appearances.

"He's catching up to the level," said coach Barry Trotz, whose club seeks its first three-game winning streak. "He's confident after seeing some of the best players in the world. When you start facing those guys on a regular basis, you're going to feel a little bit more confident if you have success."

After totaling four goals while going 1-3-1 over their previous five contests, the Maple Leafs (13-7-1) broke out of their slump with nine goals in back-to-back wins over Buffalo and the New York Islanders to open this five-game homestand.

They've outscored opponents 18-8 during this five-game home winning streak. Toronto hasn't won six straight at home since a nine-game run March 6-April 7, 2007.

Phil Kessel, who leads the team with 12 goals and 21 points, has been particularly dangerous at home with seven goals during the streak. The winger also had a goal and two assists in Toronto's 4-0 victory in Nashville on Oct. 10.

"He's a highly talented player and doesn't need many chances to score goals," said linemate James van Riemsdyk after Kessel ended a four-game scoring drought with two goals against the Islanders.

Jonathan Bernier, 3-1-1 with a 1.55 GAA in his last five starts after Tuesday's win, continued his dominance of the Predators with 36 saves in the October victory. He's 8-1-0 with a 1.67 GAA in nine career starts in this matchup.

Toronto will have to keep an eye on defenseman Shea Weber, Nashville's co-leader with six goals after scoring in each of the past two games.

The Predators, whose 48 goals are the fewest in the Western Conference, have scored two or fewer in five of six games even with a 7-2 win over Chicago on Saturday. They could be without Eric Nystrom (upper body), while fellow forward Filip Forsberg will miss the contest (upper body).

Toronto center Nazem Kadri, meanwhile, will be back in the lineup following a three-game suspension for his hit on Minnesota goaltender Niklas Backstrom.

The Maple Leafs have won three of the last four meetings in Toronto, though this will be Nashville's first visit since 2010.
