KEY GAME INFORMATION
PITTSBURGH: LAST SEASON: 51-24-7, 109 points. Won Metropolitan Division. Lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference semifinals.
COACH: Mike Johnston (first season, first NHL season).
ADDED: D Christian Ehrhoff, F Patric Hornqvist, C Nick Spaling, F Blake Comeau, G Thomas Greiss.
LOST: F James Neal, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sidney Crosby. Sid ''the Kid'' isn't so young anymore. It's been nearly a decade since he arrived in Pittsburgh and helped rescue a floundering franchise. He rolled to his second MVP Award in 2013-14 after racking 36 goals and 68 assists for a league-leading 146 points. A wrist injury slowed him in the postseason. He scored just once in 13 playoff games.
OUTLOOK: New coach, new general manager but same old expectations in Pittsburgh. It's been more than five years since they lifted the Stanley Cup, a drought that cost former coach Dan Bylsma his job. Johnston brings in a more structured philosophy. There may be growing pains early, but if Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are healthy, the Penguins will again be a threat to make a deep playoff run.
TAMPA BAY: LAST SEASON: 46-27-9, 101 points. Swept in first round of playoffs by Montreal.
COACH: Jon Cooper, second full season with Lighting, 51-35-12.
ADDED: F Brian Boyle, F Brenden Morrow, D Anton Stralman, D Jason Garrison, G Evgeni Nabokov, F Jonathan Drouin.
LOST: G Anders Lindback, F Ryan Malone, F Teddy Purcell, F Nate Thompson, D Sami Salo.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Ondrej Palat. One of the NHL's top rookies last season. With Steven Stamkos missing a significant portion of the year and Martin St. Louis departing in a late-season trade, Palat finished with team-leading 50 points, including 23 goals. Third among league rookies in goals and second in points, he led all rookies with 44 points after Jan. 1.
OUTLOOK: With Bishop healthy again after missing the playoffs with a dislocated elbow, many expect the Lightning to prosper in the relatively weak Eastern Conference and make a deep run in the playoffs. Stamkos has scored more goals (210) than any player in the league since the start of the 2009-10 season and Bishop is coming off a season in which he set franchise season records for wins (37), save percentage (.924) and goals-against average (2.23).

*Penguins-Lightning Preview* ============================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Pittsburgh (22-6-4) at Tampa Bay (20-11-4), 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Pittsburgh Penguins are growing more short-handed by the day due to an ongoing mumps scare, but they might not need much more than Evgeni Malkin against their next opponent.

The former MVP has 12 goals and 10 assists during a nine-game point streak against the Tampa Bay Lightning to pace Pittsburgh's 10-game winning streak in the series, which he'll try to help extend in Tuesday night's visit to Tampa.

Malkin scored in Monday's 4-3 shootout loss in Florida as the Penguins (22-6-5) saw a three-game winning streak end, though they're 5-0-3 since last losing in regulation on Dec. 4.

The Penguins sent forwards Steve Downie and Brandon Sutter and goalie Thomas Greiss back to Pittsburgh for mumps testing before the game, yet still managed a point despite a 3-1 deficit in the third and plenty of illness and injury.

"We're handicapped a bit with so many players in and out of the lineup, new bodies and faces," coach Mike Johnston said. "I give our defense a lot of credit."

The Penguins have scored 49 goals during their streak against the Lightning (20-11-4), which hit double digits with a 4-2 home win on Dec. 15. They've won the last four in Tampa by a 20-10 margin.

Crosby has eight goals and 11 assists during an eight-game point streak against the Lightning, while Chris Kunitz has six goals and six assists in his last eight in the series.

Steven Stamkos has five goals and four assists in his last six games versus Pittsburgh.

The Lightning are beginning a three-game homestand in danger of dropping three straight for the first time this season after Saturday's 3-1 loss to the New York Islanders. They went 1-3-1 on an East Coast road trip as part of a 2-5-1 skid during which they've scored 16 goals. The power play has had something to do with that, going 2 for 25 over the eight-game stretch.

"I think it's just more about getting back to the basics all over the ice, not trying to be too cute or too fancy," forward Tyler Johnson told the team's official website. "We have a lot of skill in this locker room. We're able to make a lot of plays. In the end, it's the easy, basic plays that's the stuff that gets the job done."

Andrei Vasilevskiy could get a third start as No. 1 goaltender Ben Bishop recovers from a lower-body injury. Bishop has missed three games and is pushing to return, but the Lightning seem to be taking a more cautious approach.

"Something could be said too about playing the kid who's hot, and (Vasilevskiy) is playing well right now," coach Jon Cooper told the team's official website. "So, it does give you a little bit of a luxury to have some goalie depth. It that can give Bish a little bit of an opportunity to become 100 percent, it'd be crazy not to take advantage of that."

The 20-year-old Vasilevskiy stopped 45 of 47 shots against the Islanders and is 1-1-0 with a .958 save percentage to begin his NHL career.

Bishop is 0-3-0 with a 3.40 goals-against average in his last four starts. Against the Penguins, he's 0-2-0 with a 4.26 GAA in four starts.

Marc-Andre Fleury could play back-to-back nights due to Greiss' illness, though he's 3-5-1 with a 3.74 in 11 games with no rest between outings over the past four seasons. Jeff Zatkoff, who started 18 games last season but hasn't played in the NHL in 2014-15, is the backup.

Fleury is 6-0-2 with a 1.59 GAA this month, which includes the win over Tampa Bay. He didn't win in his first nine career games against the Lightning but is 16-6-0 since with a 2.10 GAA, including seven straight wins.

The Lightning figure to be without defenseman Jason Garrison after he missed the third period against the Islanders with an undisclosed injury.
