KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA:

LAST SEASON: 35-36-11, 81 points.

COACH: Mike Yeo, 2nd season, 35-36-11.

ADDED: LW Zach Parise, D Ryan Suter, C Mikael Granlund, LW Torrey Mitchell, C Zenon Konopka, C Jake Dowell.

LOST: LW Guillaume Latendresse, RW Nick Johnson, LW Warren Peters, RW Jed Ortmeyer, D Mike Lundin, C Erik Christensen, D Kurtis Foster.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Parise and Suter are the headliners, their identical 13-year, $98 million contracts serving as July 4 fireworks over the NHL free agent market, but the Finnish sensation Granlund is being given a spot on the second line before his 21st birthday. The ninth overall pick in the 2010 draft is so popular in his home country that paparazzi follow him around town. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound, slick-with-the-stick scorer spent the lockout playing for the Wild's AHL affiliate. He had 20 goals and 31 assists in 45 games last season for his club in Helsinki.

OUTLOOK: The Wild had the league's best record at 20-7-3 at the 30-game mark but nosedived down the stretch under the weight of myriad injuries. After signing Parise, bringing Granlund over and getting Pierre-Marc Bouchard back from another lengthy concussion absence, the Wild have unquestionably the deepest and most talented group of forwards in the franchise's 13-year history. Staying healthy in a fast-paced condensed season will be critical, of course, but the key to making the playoffs for the first time in five years is on the blue line, where veterans Suter and Tom Gilbert will need help from young players like Jared Spurgeon, Clayton Stoner and Marco Scandella.

SAN JOSE:

LAST SEASON: 42-27-13, 97 points. Lost to Los Angeles Kings 4-1 in Western Conference Finals.

COACH: Dave Tippett, 4th season with Coyotes, 125-78-33; 9th overall, 406-234-98 in NHL.

ADDED: LW Steve Sullivan, D Zbynek Michalek, RW David Moss.

LOST: LW Ray Whitney, LW Taylor Pyatt, D Adrian Aucoin, C Daymond Langkow, D Michal Rozsival.

PLAYER TO WATCH: G Mike Smith. The shaggy-haired goalie known as Smitty proved to be a more-than-capable No. 1 goalie in his first full season on the job, winning 28 games with eight shutouts and a 2.21 goals-against average. With the confidence of last season's deep playoff run, he could be a Vezina Trophy candidate.

OUTLOOK: The Coyotes should be brimming with confidence after winning their first division title and reaching the conference finals for the first time in 33 years as an NHL franchise. With the core of last year's roster back, they should be position to get the lockout-shortened season off to a good start and be able to sustain it toward another possible deep run in the playoffs.

---

SAN JOSE SHARKS

LAST SEASON: 43-29-10, 96 points. Lost to St. Louis 4-1 in first round.

COACH: Todd McLellan, 5th season, 195-92-41.

ADDED: D Brad Stuart, F Adam Burish.

LOST: F Torrey Mitchell, F Daniel Winnik, F Dominic Moore, F Brad Winchester, F Andrew Murray, D Colin White, D Jim Vandermeer.

PLAYER TO WATCH: D Brent Burns. The big acquisition before last season, Burns struggled in his first season with the Sharks as he tried to figure out how to fit in. His points and assists were down from his final year in Minnesota and he was not nearly the aggressive, hard-hitting defenseman the Sharks had been expecting. The Sharks hope that an increased comfort level will lead to better results in year two for Burns.

OUTLOOK: The Sharks hope to be a faster, more aggressive team after the disappointing finish a year ago. They brought back most of the key players from that squad led by captain Joe Thornton but hope Hall of Famer Larry Robinson's impact on the struggling penalty kill unit as a new assistant will help return San Jose near the top of the conference.

*Wild-Sharks Preview* =====================

By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer

Minnesota (24-16-3) at San Jose (23-13-7), 10:30 p.m. EDT

The San Jose Sharks are making a strong push to open the postseason at home. Playing their next three games there could help them move closer to making it happen.

San Jose looks to extend its home point streak to 15 while the Minnesota Wild try to continue their playoff push with a third straight win Thursday night.

With Raffi Torres scoring on his first shootout attempt in two years, the Sharks (23-13-7) moved into fourth-place tie with Los Angeles in a 3-2 victory over the Kings on Tuesday.

It was the start of a four-game homestand for San Jose, 15-1-5 at HP Pavilion this season. The Sharks' 10-0-4 surge is their longest home point streak since a team-best 31-game stretch March 3, 2008-Jan. 13, 2009.

Antti Niemi has been in net for all but two of San Jose's home games in 2012-13, and has a 1.76 goals-against average in those contests after making 41 saves Tuesday. It was his 21st consecutive start.

"He's been a real good workhorse for us," coach Todd McLellan said. "There's been guys in the past who played 80 of 82 games in the league. So it's not uncommon for goaltenders to play a lot. We're only halfway through what would normally be a regular season. So he looks like he's got a lot of gas in the tank and is excited about playing."

Niemi had lost three consecutive starts to the Wild before turning aside 31 shots in a 4-2 home win April 3. The Sharks are 10-1-1 in Minnesota's last 12 visits.

That doesn't bode well for a Wild team fighting to secure its first playoff berth in four years. Minnesota (24-16-3), the sixth seed, is four points back of Vancouver for the Northwest Division lead but could also easily fall out of the top eight.

The Wild, though, appear to be on the upswing at the right time, scoring nine goals on the first two stops of their three-game trip. Minnesota, 2-0-1 in its last three, totaled eight goals during a 1-5-1 slump that preceded the latest two games.

"We went through a definite lull where we weren't playing the way we should, but as of late, we are starting to find our game again," center Kyle Brodziak said.

Brodziak ended an 11-game goal drought with two in a 5-3 victory over Edmonton on Tuesday.

Niklas Backstrom earned his first shutout of the season with 33 saves in a 2-0 home victory over the Sharks on March 23. Backstrom, though, hasn't been on his game at San Jose, recording a 3.68 GAA while losing five straight starts there.

Backstrom will have to worry about the Sharks' Brent Burns, who has scored eight goals - including one against the Oilers - in 19 games since McLellan moved him from defense to wing.

Wild leading scorer Zach Parise, who snapped an eight-game goal drought Tuesday, has three goals and six assists in a seven-game point streak versus the Sharks.

Minnesota had won four straight in this series prior to its visit to San Jose earlier this month.
