| | | ARIZONA: LAST SEASON: 37-30-15, 89 points. Ninth overall in Western Conference.
COACH: Dave Tippett, fifth season with Arizona, 156-96-42; In 10th NHL season as coach, 427-252-107.
ADDED: C Sam Gagner, C Joe Vitale, RW B.J. Crombeen, G Devan Dubnyk.
LOST: RW Radim Vrbata, C Mike Ribeiro, D Derek Morris, LW Paul Bissonnette, G Thomas Greiss.
PLAYER TO WATCH: C Antoine Vermette. As Ribeiro struggled late last season, Vermette surged to the forefront as Arizona's top center. He led the Coyotes with 24 goals last season and is a superb two-way player - a perfect fit for Tippett's defense-first system. A bigger season could be on the horizon as the Coyotes lean on him more.
OUTLOOK: The Coyotes should contend for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Arizona lost captain Shane Doan for 12 games due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and goalie Mike Smith was out the final 10 games with a knee injury. Even with the injuries, the Coyotes finished two points out of the West's final playoff spot. Stay relatively healthy and get back to their defensive ways, they might be in the mix again this season. | | PHILADELPHIA: LAST SEASON: 42-30-10, 94 points. Finished 3rd in Metropolitan Division. Sixth in Eastern Conference. Lost to New York Rangers in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Craig Berube, 2nd season with Flyers (42-27-10); 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: C R.J. Umberger, LW Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, D Michael Del Zotto
LOST: LW Scott Hartnell, RW Steve Downie, LW Tye McGinn, C Kris Newbury, D Erik Gustafsson, D Bruno Gervais
PLAYER TO WATCH: Flyers center Claude Giroux. Back earlier than expected from an unspecified lower-body injury, Giroux needs to be in top form if the Flyers expect to play deep into the postseason. Giroux was selected last season as a Hart Trophy finalist, the league's MVP award. He matched a career high with 28 goals and finished third in the NHL scoring race (86 points).
OUTLOOK: The Flyers need Steve Mason to play again like a true No. 1 goalie and for Giroux to play like an MVP candidate for the Flyers to have a shot at ending their Stanley Cup drought. The Flyers are 0 for the Cup since they won consecutive Cups in 1974 and 1975 and seemed poised to build a dynasty. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs (1966-67) have suffered longer than any other team that was won at least one Stanley Cup. |

*Coyotes-Flyers Preview* ========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Arizona (16-25-5) at Philadelphia (19-22-7), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Fresh off his record-tying performance in the All-Star game, Philadelphia Flyers forward Jakub Voracek will resume the challenging task of getting his team into playoff contention.
Having won two of three before the break, the Flyers will try to keep their momentum going Tuesday night against a slumping Arizona Coyotes team that's without its leading goal scorer.
Voracek got a big stage to showcase the talents that have made him the league leader with 39 assists and 56 points. He tied Mario Lemieux's All-Star mark with six points - three goals and three assists - in Team Toews' 17-12 win over Team Foligno on Sunday in Columbus.
Philadelphia went into the break on a positive note with a 3-2 overtime victory against Pittsburgh last Tuesday, and Voracek assisted on captain Claude Giroux's winning goal. Giroux, who opposed Voracek in the All-Star game, is tied for third in the league with 35 assists and 51 points.
"Their forwards up front are really their strength," Arizona captain Shane Doan said. "Their guys offensively are so good so we're going to have to be good."
Despite the efforts of their two All-Stars, the Flyers (19-22-7) are facing a 12-point deficit in the playoff race.
"We've been in this position for a while now. At times, we've played good hockey then at times we get off page and lose a couple games in a row," defenseman Mark Streit said. "Obviously, that can't happen anymore. We've got to play the right way. We've got to play our hockey. Every game means the world to us right now."
Philadelphia will get to play its next four games at home, where it's won four of six, and has a prime chance at another victory given Arizona's recent woes.
The Coyotes (16-25-5) have dropped a season-worst six in a row, getting outscored 24-9 in that 0-5-1 skid, and are 16 points back in the playoff hunt. They lost 6-1 in Chicago in their final game before the break last Tuesday, and their four-game road losing streak is one short of matching a season high.
"What we've done up to this point has been unacceptable, and we have to be better," Doan said. "The last game in Chicago was embarrassing."
Mikkel Boedker is week-to-week after having his spleen removed following a 4-3 shootout loss in Winnipeg on Jan. 18. The winger, who has 14 goals and 14 assists, had played 257 consecutive games, the fourth-longest streak in team history.
Boedker had two assists in a 4-2 home win over Philadelphia on Dec. 29, while Antoine Vermette led the way with two goals and an assist. R.J. Umberger scored twice in the third period for the Flyers.
Philadelphia is 7-4-1 in its last 12 home games against Arizona, falling 2-1 in the most recent one Oct. 11, 2013.
The Flyers won't have forward Zac Rinaldo available for the next eight games after he was suspended by the NHL on Monday for charging and boarding Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang last Tuesday.
