| | | OTTAWA: OTTAWA (AP) - The Senators have been one of the best kept secrets in the NHL the last two seasons. They qualified for the postseason both times, they advanced to the second round last season, and they won 65 regular-season games over that span.
But the word's out on this team now. And in a tough division - the newly redefined Atlantic - equaling that success is going to be a chore.
Indeed, among others, Toronto, Boston, Montreal and Detroit are division mates with the Senators this season. All of those clubs made the postseason, and the Bruins even advanced to the Stanley Cup finals. | | PHILADELPHIA: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Uncharacteristically out of the playoffs last season, the frustrated Flyers turned their summer into a game of fantasy hockey.
Time will tell if they win that game.
Either way, Philadelphia is different.
In came 33-year-old forward Vinny Lecavalier, given a five-year deal worth $22.5 million to spruce up the offense. In came 35-year-old defenseman Mark Streit, given a $21-million, four-year deal to shore up the defense. And in came 30-year-old goaltender Ray Emery - on a $1.65 million, one-year deal to join the Flyers a second time - to give Steve Mason some competition for the top spot.
Philadelphia even took a retreat to Lake Placid to help team rapport, and mesh the new faces in with the old ones.
This new-look bunch will debut - ready or not - vs. Toronto on Oct. 2. |

*Senators-Flyers Preview* =========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Ottawa (8-8-4) at Philadelphia (7-10-2), 7:00 p.m. EDT
After having their longest win streak of the season snapped, the Philadelphia Flyers will try to bounce back against a team they beat handily during that run.
The Flyers will seek another victory over the Ottawa Senators in their return home from a three-game trip Tuesday night.
Philadelphia (7-10-2) looked like it might extend its three-game win streak Friday against Winnipeg, but it gave up a power-play goal with 5:37 left in regulation in a 3-2 shootout defeat. The result, however, gave the Flyers at least one point in six of seven games after a 3-9-0 start.
"We've got to build on that. We had a good road trip but we're still out of it," forward Steve Downie said. "So we've got a lot of work to do. We've got to stay focused and keep getting better every day. We've just got to keep working hard and moving things forward."
Philadelphia will try to earn some more points by improving on its 3-7-0 home record during a three-game stay at the Wells Fargo Center, and the first opponent is a team the Flyers trounced last Tuesday.
Jakub Voracek scored a pair of goals in a 5-0 rout of Ottawa to help his club match its highest scoring output of the season.
"We've just got to play the same way we played on the road," said Voracek, who has five points in the last four games. "We've got to be focused on Tuesday. Obviously, the mood is a little better and we're having more fun on the ice. We've got to keep doing the same things."
The Senators (8-8-4) enter this rematch having dropped two of three following a season-high three consecutive wins, and they suffered another lopsided defeat Sunday, 4-1 to Columbus. After rallying for a 4-2 win over Boston on Friday, Ottawa only avoided the shutout when Erik Karlsson scored a power-play goal with 2:27 left.
"At some point and time when you hit 30 (games) you are what you are, and if this is what we are as an inconsistent group, it's not going to be much fun," coach Paul MacLean said. "We'll examine all that stuff and we'll see if we need to make changes, but we need to do something.
"At the end of the day, it comes down to the guys wearing the sweaters. They have to be ready to play."
The Senators gave up three scores while short-handed Sunday, and their opponents are 7 for 23 on the power play in the last six games. While it got Karlsson's power-play goal, that unit is 2 for 21 over the same stretch.
"We're 20 games in and it seems like there's a lot of games left to be played, but if we don't start showing up soon it's going to be over quick," Karlsson said.
Ottawa has lost its last two overall matchups with the Flyers but has won two of its last three in Philadelphia. Colin Greening scored the tiebreaking goal with 5:36 remaining in the Senators' most recent visit, a 3-1 victory April 11.
Voracek has scored four goals over his last four matchups with Ottawa.
