KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON: LAST SEASON: 38-30-14, 90 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Barry Trotz, 1st season with Capitals; 16th overall in NHL, 557-479-60-100.
ADDED: Trotz, GM Brian MacLellan, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen, G Justin Peters.
LOST: Coach Adam Oates, GM George McPhee, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Dustin Penner, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met.
NY RANGERS: LAST SEASON: 45-31-6, 96 points. Finished 2nd in Metropolitan Division, 5th in Eastern Conference. Lost to Los Angeles Kings in Stanley Cup finals.
COACH: Alain Vigneault, 2nd season with Rangers (45-31-6); 13th overall in NHL (467-319-102).
ADDED: D Dan Boyle, D Mike Kostka, D Matt Hunwick, C Chris Mueller, LW Tanner Glass, G Cedrick Desjardins, C Matthew Lombardi, RW Lee Stempniak, LW Ryan Malone.
LOST: C Brad Richards, RW Derek Dorsett, C Brian Boyle, D Anton Stralman, LW Benoit Pouliot, D Justin Falk, RW Arron Asham, LW Daniel Carcillo, D Raphael Diaz, C Darroll Powe.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Rick Nash. The top forward will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing postseason in which the 2002 No. 1 draft notched only three goals and 10 points in 25 games and heard boos from the crowd. The 30-year-old left wing has come to training camp looking thinner and fitter as he heads into his third season with the Rangers. Nash has four seasons left for big money on his current contract, so there is plenty of time for him to win over the Madison Square Garden faithful.
OUTLOOK: The Rangers will go as far as goalie Henrik Lundqvist, ''The King,'' will take them. The team has undergone major changes since the run to the finals, but with the strong core of returning veterans such as Nash, Martin St. Louis, and defensemen Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh, fortified by newcomers Dan Boyle, Lee Stempniak and Ryan Malone, New York could again be a tough out in the playoffs. A new captain is expected to be announced at the start of the season to replace the trio of alternate captains that took leadership roles after former captain Ryan Callahan was traded to Tampa Bay late last season for St. Louis.

*Capitals-Rangers Preview* ==========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Washington (16-10-6) at New York (17-10-4), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The New York Rangers' winning streak is being spurred by superb goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist and Cam Talbot, while Braden Holtby is doing the same during the Washington Capitals' surge.

Lundqvist should be back in net as the Rangers try to win seven in a row for the first time in over three years Tuesday night against the Capitals at Madison Square Garden.

New York (17-10-4) has outscored opponents 19-8 while winning six straight for its longest streak since a seven-game run from Oct. 31-Nov. 15, 2011.

The Rangers have two shutouts in their past four games, raising their NHL-best total to eight and matching last season's amount. It's also the first time they've had that many within the first 31 games of a season since getting 11 in 1928-29.

Talbot earned the latest with 18 saves in Sunday's 1-0 win over Carolina to sweep the home-and-home set. He's 3-3-1 with a 2.02 goals-against average in eight games, and all of his wins are shutouts.

"We are no different than any team in the NHL. You can't win if you don't get goaltending," coach Alain Vigneault said. "When we use Cam, he's given us some real good performances."

That's expected of Lundqvist, the 2012 Vezina Trophy winner and the Rangers' all-time leader with 323 wins and 55 shutouts. He's started five games in this streak, compiling a 1.56 GAA with one shutout. However, only one of those games came at home, where Lundqvist has been feast or famine.

He has a 1.59 GAA and three shutouts in eight victories at MSG compared to a 4.04 mark while losing seven starts - two via the shootout with one shutout.

Lundqvist has split his last two meetings - both at home - with Washington (17-10-6) after posting three straight shutout victories with two in the playoffs.

Holtby has a 1.75 GAA while starting every game during the Capitals' 7-0-2 stretch. He had a season-high 38 saves in Monday's 2-1 win over Ottawa and was particularly outstanding in the opening period, making all 14 stops while Washington could only manage six shots.

"There's no way we win that hockey game if Braden doesn't give us the performance he did in the first," coach Barry Trotz said.

Holtby, though, is 1-6-0 with a 2.47 GAA in his last eight games in New York, including playoffs. Backup Justin Peters, who last appeared in a game Nov. 29, is 1-2-0 with a 4.32 GAA in his last four games.

While Holtby has provided stellar goaltending, Washington is also finding success offensively with 29 goals in the 7-0-2 surge, including 11 during a three-game winning streak.

Nicklas Backstrom has 11 points in seven games, tallying three goals with two assists in the last two. Backstrom, though, has just four points in his last nine overall visits to New York and one in the past four.

Alex Ovechkin had a goal against Lundqvist in a 4-1 road loss to the Rangers on Jan. 19, ending his nine-game drought in the series, playoffs included. The superstar forward has registered five shots or more in a season-best six consecutive games.
