| | | LOS ANGELES: LOS ANGELES (AP) - After the most successful two-year stretch in franchise history, the Los Angeles Kings just want to keep it going.
That's because the Kings historically aren't used to good times. The 2012 Stanley Cup champions returned to the Western Conference finals last summer, winning six total playoff rounds - twice as many as this long-struggling team had ever managed in any two-year stretch.
To stay on top, Los Angeles plans to rely on the same unflashy, workmanlike style that allowed coach Darryl Sutter's club to raise the Cup for the first time. | | NY RANGERS: NEW YORK (AP) - The message from the New York Rangers bench might not be any different than in years past. The tone in which it is delivered most likely will be.
Whether the softer approach new coach Alain Vigneault offers in comparison to the barking tones of deposed bench boss John Tortorella is what the Rangers need remains to be seen.
Despite getting the club to the Eastern Conference semifinals last season, Tortorella was somewhat surprisingly let go by general manager Glen Sather and replaced by the gentler-on-the-outside Vigneault, who was dismissed as coach of the Canucks after Vancouver was swept in the first round of the playoffs by San Jose.
In an added twist, Tortorella got Vigneault's old job in Vancouver, while Vigneault took over for him in New York.
The Rangers open at Phoenix on Oct. 3. |

*Kings-Rangers Preview* =======================
By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer
Los Angeles (13-6-1) at New York (9-9-0), 7:00 p.m. EDT
In terms of results, the Los Angeles Kings haven't had much to complain about in their time on the East Coast.
They've picked up five of a possible six points in the first three games of a four-game trip, and they'll try to close it out with a third straight win Sunday night against the New York Rangers.
The Kings (13-6-1) got third-period goals from Dwight King and Anze Kopitar in Friday's 2-0 win at New Jersey to improve to 4-0-1 in their last five games.
It was their second straight win with Ben Scrivens in net. No. 1 goaltender Jonathan Quick was sidelined with a strained groin during the first game of the trip at Buffalo.
The 26-save effort was Scrivens' second shutout in four starts this season, improving him to 3-1-1 with a 1.51 goals-against average and .940 save percentage.
"He's a solid goaltender," Kopitar said. "We got off to a little bit of a slow start and we kept building up our game, making plays. Eventually in the third, we got one."
The win followed Thursday's 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders - a game that featured three Kings goals in the third period.
"The confidence was there after winning on the island," Scrivens said.
King has scored twice in his last three games and is second on the team with six goals in 20 games. He scored four in 47 games a season ago.
The Rangers (10-9-0) will go for the season sweep against the Kings after winning 3-1 in Los Angeles on Oct. 7.
They're also coming off a shutout win with their backup goalie after Saturday's 1-0 victory at Montreal.
Captain Ryan Callahan scored a second-period goal on the power play and rookie Cam Talbot made 22 saves to improve to 4-1-0 with his first NHL shutout.
The Rangers had gone eight games in Montreal without a win and had scored one goal in their last five games there.
"We were well aware of it," Callahan said. "We came in and had a good road game. We got a good start and carried it through, and Talbot was unbelievable."
Talbot became the first Rangers goalie to earn a shutout in Montreal since Ed Giacomin in 1967.
"It means quite a bit to me," Talbot said. "He and Mike Richter are two of the greatest Ranger goalies of all time, so to hear my name mentioned alongside his is pretty surreal, to be honest."
No. 1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist will be back in net against the Kings. He's posted a 1.73 GAA in seven home starts this season.
The Rangers have won seven of nine after a 3-7-0 start to the season. They haven't allowed over three goals since Oct. 19 - a 12-game span - after yielding 29 in their first seven contests.
New York is likely to again be without forward Rick Nash, though it expects to have him back from a concussion later in the week.
