KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON: LAST SEASON: 38-30-14, 90 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Barry Trotz, 1st season with Capitals; 16th overall in NHL, 557-479-60-100.
ADDED: Trotz, GM Brian MacLellan, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen, G Justin Peters.
LOST: Coach Adam Oates, GM George McPhee, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Dustin Penner, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met.
NY ISLANDERS: LAST SEASON: 34-37-11, 79 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing eighth in Metropolitan Division and 14th in Eastern Conference.
COACH: Jack Capuano, fifth season with Islanders (118-120-39).
ADDED: G Jaroslav Halak, G Chad Johnson, C Cory Conacher, RW Jack Skille, LW Harry Zolnierczyk, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Nikolai Kulemin.
LOST: G Evgeni Nabokov, D Radek Martinek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: John Tavares. The 24-year-old star center with the C on his sweater is back after missing New York's final 22 games last season due to a knee injury sustained while playing for Canada in the Olympics. He was second on the team with 66 points - including 24 goals - despite playing in only 59 games. The Islanders have made the playoffs only once (2013) since he was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft.
OUTLOOK: This will be a year of nostalgia for the Islanders as they play their final season at the Nassau Coliseum - their home since joining the NHL in 1972 where four straight Stanley Cup champions were built from 1980-83. They will move to Brooklyn's Barclays Center next season. Since 2004, the Islanders have reached the playoffs just twice (2007 and 2013) and were eliminated in the first round both times. The task doesn't get any easier in the eight-team Metropolitan Division with perennial powerhouse Pittsburgh and the rival New York Rangers, who reached the Stanley Cup finals last season. Halak will shoulder a lot of the burden, along with Tavares, as he replaces veteran Evgeni Nabokov in goal.

*Capitals-Islanders Preview* ============================

Washington At Ny Islanders, Game Three, 12:00 p.m. EDT

(AP) - Capitals goalie Braden Holtby wasn't sure what felt worse: Sitting out a playoff game because of an illness, or watching the Capitals fall behind the New York Islanders by two goals before rallying for a victory.

"It wasn't fun. A lot less stressful playing than it is watching, that's for sure," Holtby said after returning to practice Saturday. "It's something I don't want to really experience again."

There's a good chance he won't.

The Capitals' workhorse declared himself ready to return Sunday, when the first-round playoff series shifts to Long Island after the teams split the first two games.

Holtby, who was already feeling the effects of the illness before Game 1, gave up three goals on 26 shots in 4-1 loss on Wednesday. Minor-league call-up Philipp Grubauer stopped 18 shots, and Washington scored the final three goals of a 4-3 win Friday night.

"Playing or not playing, the way won, the way we battled, it was exciting to be part of our team," said Holtby, who matched a franchise record with 41 wins last season.

Capitals coach Barry Trotz wasn't prepared to commit to Holtby starting Sunday. But he did acknowledge that the goalie looked fine during a brief practice.

The Alex Ovechkin-led Capitals responded from a listless performance in the opener, by regaining their puck-possession presence over the final two periods Friday. They outshot the Islanders 30-14 over the final 40 minutes, and secured the win early in the third period when Nicklas Backstrom and Jason Chimera scored 3:51 apart.

Now it's the Islanders' turn to regroup and regain their speedy, fore-checking style that flustered the Capitals on Wednesday.

"We were a little too passive and, as I told our guys, our identity hasn't been that all year," New York coach Jack Capuano said. "We're not a team that plays safe or sits back."

The Capitals made the most of their lone power-play opportunity in Game 2, with Backstrom's tally knotting the game 3-3. Washington, which led the NHL with a 25.3 percent conversion rate in the regular season, had only three chances with the man advantage in the first two games.

Slowing Ovechkin will again be a focus for the Islanders. The Russian has 11 goals and 16 assists in 27 career road playoff games but only one goal and two assists in his last 11 outside the nation's capital dating back to the 2012 postseason.

The Islanders are out to capitalize on their home-ice advantage after wresting it away from the Capitals with their Game 1 victory. Their 25 home wins tied for the most among Metropolitan Division teams and that came despite going 2-6-2 in their last 10 at Nassau Coliseum, where they will leave following postseason's end for Brooklyn.

"We're going to come with some pretty serious intensity in Nassau, so it'll be up to them to match us," said Cal Clutterbuck, who scored New York's first goal on its second shot.

Islanders leading scorer John Tavares had an assist in each of the first two games of this series and scored goals in each of New York's three home games versus Pittsburgh in the 2012-13 postseason.

Capuano did not commit to making any lineup changes for Game 3 - defenseman Travis Harmonic is again likely to be out - though Mikhail Grabovski may be available. The veteran center, who had 13 goals and 35 points for the Capitals last season, has been sidelined since Feb. 19 due to post-concussion effects.

"We'll have to look closely as to what we want to do, as far as the matchups at home," Capuano told the team's official website. "There's a chance as we move forward that other guys are going to get an opportunity."
