KEY GAME INFORMATION
TAMPA BAY: LAST SEASON: 46-27-9, 101 points. Swept in first round of playoffs by Montreal.
COACH: Jon Cooper, second full season with Lighting, 51-35-12.
ADDED: F Brian Boyle, F Brenden Morrow, D Anton Stralman, D Jason Garrison, G Evgeni Nabokov, F Jonathan Drouin.
LOST: G Anders Lindback, F Ryan Malone, F Teddy Purcell, F Nate Thompson, D Sami Salo.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Ondrej Palat. One of the NHL's top rookies last season. With Steven Stamkos missing a significant portion of the year and Martin St. Louis departing in a late-season trade, Palat finished with team-leading 50 points, including 23 goals. Third among league rookies in goals and second in points, he led all rookies with 44 points after Jan. 1.
OUTLOOK: With Bishop healthy again after missing the playoffs with a dislocated elbow, many expect the Lightning to prosper in the relatively weak Eastern Conference and make a deep run in the playoffs. Stamkos has scored more goals (210) than any player in the league since the start of the 2009-10 season and Bishop is coming off a season in which he set franchise season records for wins (37), save percentage (.924) and goals-against average (2.23).
NY ISLANDERS: LAST SEASON: 34-37-11, 79 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing eighth in Metropolitan Division and 14th in Eastern Conference.
COACH: Jack Capuano, fifth season with Islanders (118-120-39).
ADDED: G Jaroslav Halak, G Chad Johnson, C Cory Conacher, RW Jack Skille, LW Harry Zolnierczyk, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Nikolai Kulemin.
LOST: G Evgeni Nabokov, D Radek Martinek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: John Tavares. The 24-year-old star center with the C on his sweater is back after missing New York's final 22 games last season due to a knee injury sustained while playing for Canada in the Olympics. He was second on the team with 66 points - including 24 goals - despite playing in only 59 games. The Islanders have made the playoffs only once (2013) since he was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft.
OUTLOOK: This will be a year of nostalgia for the Islanders as they play their final season at the Nassau Coliseum - their home since joining the NHL in 1972 where four straight Stanley Cup champions were built from 1980-83. They will move to Brooklyn's Barclays Center next season. Since 2004, the Islanders have reached the playoffs just twice (2007 and 2013) and were eliminated in the first round both times. The task doesn't get any easier in the eight-team Metropolitan Division with perennial powerhouse Pittsburgh and the rival New York Rangers, who reached the Stanley Cup finals last season. Halak will shoulder a lot of the burden, along with Tavares, as he replaces veteran Evgeni Nabokov in goal.

*Lightning-Islanders Preview* =============================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Tampa Bay (20-10-3) at New York (21-10-0), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The New York Islanders' final season at the Nassau Coliseum is becoming memorable, but their dominance of the Tampa Bay Lightning there goes back seven years.

The Islanders look to continue their impressive play at home in order to beat the Atlantic Division-leading Lightning again Saturday night.

New York (22-10-0) is moving to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in 2015-16, and so far the team is having a final season to remember at the Coliseum.

The Islanders are among the best home teams in the NHL, sporting a 12-3-0 record while winning nine of 10 - including a 5-2 victory over Tampa Bay on Nov. 18.

They're 11-2-1 in their last 14 home matchups with the Lightning, taking 13 of a possible 14 points over the past seven.

Brock Nelson has two goals and one assist in two overall matchups with Tampa Bay this season. The center enters this one after netting a goal and setting up another in a 2-1 win at Detroit on Friday.

"The story of the year, so far, is how we find different ways to win," Nelson said. "The last two games, we've played well defensively."

Nelson is doing his part offensively, as his 14 goals lead the Islanders and match his total as a rookie from last season.

Kyle Okposo and John Tavares have been held off the scoresheet in the past two games, but they're still tied for the team lead with 27 points.

Both should welcome a visit from the Lightning (20-10-4). Tavares has 14 points in 10 career home matchups, while Okposo has 11 points while getting at least one in each of his nine.

Tampa Bay is 1-2-1 on this five-game road trip after falling 3-2 in a shootout at New Jersey on Friday. The Lightning overcame a two-goal first-period deficit as Nikita Kucherov scored with 40.1 seconds left in regulation, but he was one of three Tampa Bay shooters to miss in the tiebreaker.

"Points are very valuable. You can't just throw one away like that," said right wing Ryan Callahan, who had two assists for a second straight game. "The shootout is pretty much a crap shoot, but that was a very valuable point we let get away."

Steven Stamkos didn't get a point in the last game at the Coliseum, but he had five goals and six assists over the previous eight. The center has found the net once in each of the last two games, giving him 19 goals (fourth in the NHL) and 36 points (sixth).

Kucherov has four goals and three assists in his last five games, and he has an assist in both season meetings with the Islanders.

With Ben Bishop expected to be out a third straight game with a lower-body injury, it's unclear if Evgeni Nabokov will start back-to-back nights for the first time this season after making 16 saves Friday. He's 3-4-2 with a 2.84 goals-against average after spending three seasons as the Islanders' starter.

After making 12 saves in the first period in his return to New York in November, Nabokov let in five goals over the final two periods.

Tampa Bay's other option is 2012 first-round pick Andrei Vasilevskiy, who made 23 saves in a 3-1 win at Philadelphia in his NHL debut Tuesday.
