| | | NEW JERSEY: LAST SEASON: 35-29-18, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Peter DeBoer, 4th season with Devils (102-76-34); 7th overall in NHL (205-183-70).
ADDED: LW Mike Cammalleri, LW Martin Havlat, C Scott Gomez, G Scott Clemmensen.
LOST: G Martin Brodeur, D Anton Volchenkov, D Mark Fayne.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jaromir Jagr. Led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 43 assists in remarkable season in which he played in all 82. Can he do it again at 42-years-old. If he does, the Devils have a shot at getting back into the playoffs for the first time since reaching NHL Finals in 2011-12.
OUTLOOK: After finishing with fourth fewest goals in the league, the Devils hope free-agent signees Cammalleri (26 goals) and Havlat (12 goals in 48 games) can boost the scoring, along with Adam Henrique, who scored a career-high 25-goals last season. With Broduer not re-signed, Cory Schnedier will get most of the work in goal after posting a 1.97 goals against average in 46 games last season. Defense allowed 208 goals, ninth best in the league. | | NY ISLANDERS: LAST SEASON: 34-37-11, 79 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing eighth in Metropolitan Division and 14th in Eastern Conference.
COACH: Jack Capuano, fifth season with Islanders (118-120-39).
ADDED: G Jaroslav Halak, G Chad Johnson, C Cory Conacher, RW Jack Skille, LW Harry Zolnierczyk, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Nikolai Kulemin.
LOST: G Evgeni Nabokov, D Radek Martinek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: John Tavares. The 24-year-old star center with the C on his sweater is back after missing New York's final 22 games last season due to a knee injury sustained while playing for Canada in the Olympics. He was second on the team with 66 points - including 24 goals - despite playing in only 59 games. The Islanders have made the playoffs only once (2013) since he was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft.
OUTLOOK: This will be a year of nostalgia for the Islanders as they play their final season at the Nassau Coliseum - their home since joining the NHL in 1972 where four straight Stanley Cup champions were built from 1980-83. They will move to Brooklyn's Barclays Center next season. Since 2004, the Islanders have reached the playoffs just twice (2007 and 2013) and were eliminated in the first round both times. The task doesn't get any easier in the eight-team Metropolitan Division with perennial powerhouse Pittsburgh and the rival New York Rangers, who reached the Stanley Cup finals last season. Halak will shoulder a lot of the burden, along with Tavares, as he replaces veteran Evgeni Nabokov in goal. |

*Devils-Islanders Preview* ==========================
By JON PALMIERI STATS Editor
New Jersey (9-10-3) at New York (16-6-0), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Jaroslav Halak was rested in the New York Islanders' last game. They hope that did nothing to cool off arguably the league's hottest goaltender.
Halak looks to win his career-best ninth consecutive start Saturday night and help the Islanders make it six straight home wins in their first matchup this season against the New Jersey Devils.
After a slow start to his first season on Long Island, Halak has been everything the Islanders (16-7-0) hoped for when they signed him to a four-year contract in May.
Since posting a 3.89 goals-against average during a four-start losing streak, Halak has won his last eight to match a personal best set with St. Louis in 2012. He's allowed just 10 goals and recorded three shutouts for a 1.21 GAA during that span. Two of those shutouts have come during New York's five-game home win streak, a stretch that has seen him stop 119 of 124 shots.
Despite his impressive run, Halak was given the day off Friday as Chad Johnson started at Washington. Johnson allowed four goals on 26 shots and the Islanders' five-game win streak was snapped with a 5-2 loss.
Halak almost certainly will be back in net looking to help the Islanders rebound from only their second loss in 12 games. New York, which hasn't won six straight at home since Dec. 29-Jan. 21, 2010, is 8-2-0 in its final season at Nassau Coliseum before moving to Brooklyn in 2015.
A thin defense could become an issue for the Islanders, who played Friday without Johnny Boychuk and lost Lubomir Visnovsky late in the second period. Both veteran defensemen have upper-body injuries and their status for Saturday is unknown.
Captain John Tavares scored his third goal in four games Friday. He has six goals and eight points in his last five games against the Devils.
"I think we know that we haven't played at the top of the game, maybe for the last couple," Tavares said. "I think we should be itching to get back home, back in front of our crowd and obviously (against) a team that we see a lot - the Devils."
New Jersey (9-10-4) begins a three-game trip after a quick stop at home Friday resulted in a 5-4 shootout loss to Detroit. The Devils, in a stretch of seven of eight on the road, blew a three-goal lead en route to their third straight defeat and fifth in six games (1-3-2).
Michael Cammalleri scored two power-play goals but failed to connect in the shootout as New Jersey lost for the 16th time in 17 tiebreakers since the start of 2013-14.
"How many leads can we continue to lose, good healthy leads? There are no excuses for us," Cammalleri said. "I hope we're not ready to dwell over this. We can't overthink things. We have to pull up our socks, man up and get ready to play a big one against the Islanders."
Cory Schneider is likely to make his 23rd start in 24 games for New Jersey. He allowed two goals in going 1-0-1 against the Islanders last season.
Travis Zajac (lower body) and Adam Henrique (upper body), New Jersey's two top centers, missed the third period Friday. Their status for this game is "uncertain," coach Peter DeBoer said.
The Islanders went 3-2-0 against the Devils last season, with each win coming in a shootout. New Jersey, however, is 8-2-1 in its last 11 visits to Nassau Coliseum.
