| | | TORONTO: LAST SEASON: 38-6-8, 84 points, finished 12th in the East and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Randy Carlyle, fifth season with the Leafs, 343-244-77.
ADDED: RW Matt Frattin, C Leo Komarov, D Roman Polak, D Stephane Robidas, C Mike Santorelli.
LOST: C Dave Bolland, D Tim Gleason, D Carl Gunnerson, C Jay McClement, RW Nikolai Kulemin, LW Mason Raymond.
PLAYER TO WATCH: David Clarkson. The right winger's first season with his boyhood team was one he'd rather forget. Clarkson had with 11 points (five goals and six assists) in 60 games with a minus-14 rating after agreeing to a seven-year, $36.75 million deal with Toronto.
OUTLOOK: The hirings of Brendan Shanahan as team president, Kyle Dubas as the assistant general manager and the added emphasis of analytics seem to indicate a new day for the Leafs. But much of the team that lost 12 of their final 14 games last season has returned. Coupled with the fact that the Leafs are in a division with 2013-14 playoff teams in Boston, Tampa Bay, Montreal and Detroit, it's hard to envision a scenario in which Toronto shows enough improvement to contend for a postseason berth in 2014-15. | | NY ISLANDERS: LAST SEASON: 34-37-11, 79 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing eighth in Metropolitan Division and 14th in Eastern Conference.
COACH: Jack Capuano, fifth season with Islanders (118-120-39).
ADDED: G Jaroslav Halak, G Chad Johnson, C Cory Conacher, RW Jack Skille, LW Harry Zolnierczyk, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Nikolai Kulemin.
LOST: G Evgeni Nabokov, D Radek Martinek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: John Tavares. The 24-year-old star center with the C on his sweater is back after missing New York's final 22 games last season due to a knee injury sustained while playing for Canada in the Olympics. He was second on the team with 66 points - including 24 goals - despite playing in only 59 games. The Islanders have made the playoffs only once (2013) since he was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft.
OUTLOOK: This will be a year of nostalgia for the Islanders as they play their final season at the Nassau Coliseum - their home since joining the NHL in 1972 where four straight Stanley Cup champions were built from 1980-83. They will move to Brooklyn's Barclays Center next season. Since 2004, the Islanders have reached the playoffs just twice (2007 and 2013) and were eliminated in the first round both times. The task doesn't get any easier in the eight-team Metropolitan Division with perennial powerhouse Pittsburgh and the rival New York Rangers, who reached the Stanley Cup finals last season. Halak will shoulder a lot of the burden, along with Tavares, as he replaces veteran Evgeni Nabokov in goal. |

*Maple Leafs-Islanders Preview* ===============================
By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer
Toronto (2-3-1) at New York (4-1-0), 7:00 p.m. EDT
After finishing with the second-worst home record in the NHL last season, the New York Islanders needed only two games to believe 2014-15 holds better fates at the Nassau Coliseum.
New York gets another opportunity to establish their home ice advantage Tuesday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Islanders finished 2013-14 with only 13 home wins - tied for fewest in the NHL - but posted victories over Carolina and San Jose. A win over Toronto would mark the first time since 2003 the Islanders opened 3-0-0 at home.
"I'm looking for our fans to get behind us once again," coach Jack Capuano said. "I'm looking to get to the old barn and make it exciting hockey. We talked about our home record last year as something we wanted to improve on. We'll get back home and hopefully get the job done."
The Islanders (4-1-0) dropped their first game of the season Saturday, losing 3-1 at Pittsburgh. New York wasted a 5-on-3 power play, failed to convert on any of its seven chances with the man advantage and also allowed two power-play goals and an empty-net score.
New York's power-play unit ranks among the best in the NHL with six goals this season. But they're among the worst teams in the NHL on the penalty kill with a meager 58.8 penalty kill percentage (10 for 17).
"You could see the execution was down," Capuano said. "They looked a little fatigued at times. But give (Pittsburgh) credit, they did a good job killing it. When you don't score on a 5-on-3, that's usually the turning point in a game."
Toronto, also coming off a loss, has experienced recent success in Long Island. The Maple Leafs are 4-0-2 in their last six road games there.
But their three-game road swing got off to a poor start Saturday, when they absorbed a 1-0 overtime loss at Detroit that capped a home-and-home sweep by the Red Wings. Toronto (2-3-1) is 0 for 12 on the power play in the last three games after converting 5 of 12 chances in the first three.
Defensively, though, Toronto enters this game with confidence after shutting down Detroit until the final 10 seconds of the extra period. The Islanders present a challenge with center John Tavares, who has team highs of seven assists and nine points.
"Me and JT always have some battles," said Leafs center Nazem Kadri after practice Monday. "He's a heck of a hockey player and always leads by example. He's the heart and soul of their team and I'm going to try and shut him down."
As Tavares went, so went the Islanders in last season's series. He had a pair of three-point games - totaling two goals and four assists - and compiled a plus-6 rating in New York's two wins over Toronto, but was held off the scoresheet and a minus-2 in the lone loss.
Tavares has eight goals - three of them game-winners - and 11 assists in 17 lifetime games versus the Maple Leafs.
Toronto's penalty kill will have to adjust without forward Brandon Kozun, who is expected to miss at least six weeks with a high ankle sprain. Kozun was fourth among Maple Leafs forwards with 7:17 of ice time while they were short-handed.
