KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHILADELPHIA: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Uncharacteristically out of the playoffs last season, the frustrated Flyers turned their summer into a game of fantasy hockey.
Time will tell if they win that game.
Either way, Philadelphia is different.
In came 33-year-old forward Vinny Lecavalier, given a five-year deal worth $22.5 million to spruce up the offense. In came 35-year-old defenseman Mark Streit, given a $21-million, four-year deal to shore up the defense. And in came 30-year-old goaltender Ray Emery - on a $1.65 million, one-year deal to join the Flyers a second time - to give Steve Mason some competition for the top spot.
Philadelphia even took a retreat to Lake Placid to help team rapport, and mesh the new faces in with the old ones.
This new-look bunch will debut - ready or not - vs. Toronto on Oct. 2.
NY ISLANDERS: UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - With their eyes squarely on the future, the New York Islanders can harken back to some recent history to build on.
For the first time in six years, the Islanders are starting a season after making a playoff appearance, and there is every reason to believe that reaching the postseason can soon become a much more common occurrence.
The Islanders stretched the Pittsburgh Penguins to six games, dropping the final two of the first-round series after splitting the first four. Just getting into the postseason was a major accomplishment, even in the lockout-shortened season, and the task will be even greater this time in a full 82-game campaign.

``I definitely see the expectations are higher, and people are going to expect for us to be in the playoffs,'' new captain John Tavares said.

*Flyers-Islanders Preview* ==========================

Philadelphia (2-7-0) at New York (3-3-3), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers have yet to score three goals in a game this season. The New York Islanders scored three goals in less than six minutes Friday night.

The Flyers will try to close a sizable production gap between the two teams Saturday night in New York and avoid losing eight of their first 10 games in regulation for the first time in franchise history.

Scoring 1.44 goals per game, the Flyers (2-7-0) rank 29th in the league while the Islanders (4-3-3) are averaging 3.2 to tie for sixth.

Brayden Schenn (two goals, three assists) is the only Flyers player with more than three points through the first nine games. Jakub Voracek, who led the way with 22 goals last season, and captain Claude Giroux haven't scored yet this year. Voracek has just three assists so far, the same total Giroux has after leading the team with 48 points in 2013.

Though they didn't exactly have a breakout night, the Flyers earned a 2-1 home win over the New York Rangers on Thursday to climb out of sole possession of the Metropolitan Division cellar.

"I still think offensively, we're not where we have to be," Flyers coach Craig Berube told the team's official website. "We don't put enough consistent pressure on the other team."

Matt Read scored a short-handed goal at 9:07 in the first, and Braydon Coburn broke a 1-all tie at 3:33 in the third. Goaltender Steve Mason made 30 saves to make the two-goal night hold up.

"This is a big win against a big rival of ours," Mason said. "Getting the two points here and hopefully being able to build off that is something we need to do and start getting ourselves out of this hole."

The Flyers are tied with a league-worst three power-play goals in 37 chances. Islanders forward Matt Moulson has a league-high five on his own.

His latest got the scoring started in the Islanders' 4-3 win at Pittsburgh Friday. Moulson has four goals in his last three games to go with a five-game point streak.

John Tavares assisted on Moulson's goal to extend his point streak to nine games.

New York trailed 2-1 entering the third, then got goals from Frans Nielsen, Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Josh Bailey in a span of 5:34. The Islanders were outshot 42-25, but made the most of their seven third-period shots to earn a win against the Metropolitan-leading Penguins.

"We know even when we're not playing our best we've found a way to stay in games and give ourselves a chance," Bailey said. "That was the case tonight."

Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov made a season-high 39 saves after allowing nine goals in his last two starts.

The Islanders' Michael Grabner will return Saturday from a two-game suspension for an illegal hit against Carolina on Oct. 19.

Scott Hartnell could return for the Flyers after missing the last four games with a lower-body injury. The left wing started skating Monday and said he hopes to be in the lineup.

The Flyers had won seven straight and 14 of 15 on Long Island before Tavares and Moulson each had a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win April 9.
