| | | MONTREAL: LAST SEASON: 46-28-8, 100 points; lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference final.
COACH: Michel Therrien, seventh season with Canadiens, 287-224-23-58.
ADDED: D Tom Gilbert, C Manny Malhotra, RW P.A. Parenteau, RW Jiri Sekac.
LOST: C Daniel Briere, RW Brian Gionta, D Josh Gorges, LW Thomas Vanek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: P.K. Subban: The 43rd overall pick in the 2007 draft solidified his status as a top-five defenseman in the NHL following a 2013-14 regular season in which he recorded 53 points (10 goals, 43 assists) in 82 games, and added another 11 (five goals and six assists) in 17 playoff games. And he isn't going anywhere. The Canadiens and Subban agreed to an eight-year, $72 million contract in the offseason.
OUTLOOK: The Canadiens earned the ire of playoff foes Boston and New York for on-ice antics and their off-ice loquaciousness. But teams don't dislike opponents who aren't good. The Canadiens are just that, and should find themselves in the playoffs come April. | | NEW JERSEY: LAST SEASON: 35-29-18, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Peter DeBoer, 4th season with Devils (102-76-34); 7th overall in NHL (205-183-70).
ADDED: LW Mike Cammalleri, LW Martin Havlat, C Scott Gomez, G Scott Clemmensen.
LOST: G Martin Brodeur, D Anton Volchenkov, D Mark Fayne.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jaromir Jagr. Led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 43 assists in remarkable season in which he played in all 82. Can he do it again at 42-years-old. If he does, the Devils have a shot at getting back into the playoffs for the first time since reaching NHL Finals in 2011-12.
OUTLOOK: After finishing with fourth fewest goals in the league, the Devils hope free-agent signees Cammalleri (26 goals) and Havlat (12 goals in 48 games) can boost the scoring, along with Adam Henrique, who scored a career-high 25-goals last season. With Broduer not re-signed, Cory Schnedier will get most of the work in goal after posting a 1.97 goals against average in 46 games last season. Defense allowed 208 goals, ninth best in the league. |

*Canadiens-Devils Preview* ==========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Montreal (47-22-8) at New Jersey (31-33-13), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Recent struggles may have cost the Montreal Canadiens a chance at the Presidents' Trophy, and it's put their hopes of an Atlantic Division title in jeopardy.
The Canadiens will try to avoid matching their longest slide of the season by winning a third straight meeting with the lowly New Jersey Devils on Friday night.
Montreal (47-22-9) trails Anaheim by four points in the race for home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs and the New York Rangers by two for the Eastern Conference's top spot. More significantly, the Canadiens are just one point ahead of second-place Tampa Bay in the division with four games left - one more than the Lightning.
Montreal's penalty kill let it down Thursday, surrendering three goals on four power plays en route to a 5-4 shootout defeat to Washington - the Canadiens' fourth (1-2-2) in five games.
"We had a really tough time killing penalties," coach Michel Therrien said. "I understand that this is the best power play in the league, but we have to do a much better job than to let in three goals."
Carey Price could get a day off after his second straight game allowing four goals. This one, however, came on 24 fewer shots than the 43 he saw in a 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay three days prior.
Price has a 1.87 goals-against average while winning five of his last seven visits to Newark, including a 22-save effort in a 4-2 victory Jan. 2.
Backup Dustin Tokarski has yet to face the Devils (31-33-13), and he's 1-3-2 with a 3.30 GAA in his last six starts.
Tomas Plekanec has three goals in two games against New Jersey this season, scoring twice in a 6-2 home victory Feb. 7. The center hasn't scored in five straight games overall while netting just two goals in the past 12 as the visitor.
The Devils are trying to avoid their first seven-game slide since opening last season 0-4-3. They've scored just seven goals during this 0-4-2 stretch after Tuesday's 3-2 overtime loss at Columbus.
Michael Cammalleri scored twice against the Blue Jackets, matching his total over the previous 13 games. The left wing leads New Jersey with 27 goals, the most he's collected since getting a career-high 39 with Calgary in 2008-09.
Cammalleri doesn't have a goal in five straight home games, but he's found the net in both matchups with the Canadiens this season.
Keith Kinkaid is scheduled to get his third start against them this season after giving up nine goals on 69 shots over the first two. He's 4-1-2 with a 1.92 GAA in seven home starts, with the only regulation defeat coming as he surrendered three in a 4-2 loss Jan. 2.
P.K. Subban had three assists in both of Montreal's victories in the season series.
"I've had two shots at them already," the rookie told the team's official website. "I'd like to get a win against them. That'd be good (against) a top team. I think it'll be like a playoff game for us. Every game is a playoff game. We want to still make some noise in the league, finish strong and get off this little slide."
