LOS ANGELES (AP) - After the most successful two-year stretch in franchise history, the Los Angeles Kings just want to keep it going.
That's because the Kings historically aren't used to good times. The 2012 Stanley Cup champions returned to the Western Conference finals last summer, winning six total playoff rounds - twice as many as this long-struggling team had ever managed in any two-year stretch.
To stay on top, Los Angeles plans to rely on the same unflashy, workmanlike style that allowed coach Darryl Sutter's club to raise the Cup for the first time. | | NEW JERSEY: NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - While other teams made the most of the lockout-shortened season, the New Jersey Devils missed the playoffs a year after making the Stanley Cup finals.
There were injuries. There were slumps. It was not pretty.
But it was also only one part of the story. Then came the offseason.
Forward Ilya Kovalchuk stunned the team in July, by walking away from $77 million left on his 15-year contract to play in Russia. Technically, the 30-year-old retired. Realistically, he left the Devils without a star player. Forward David Clarkson left via free agency, as well, and so when New Jersey opens Oct. 3 at Pittsburgh, you will see some new faces in new places. |

The Los Angeles Kings raised the Stanley Cup the last time they faced the New Jersey Devils - a championship run anchored by Jonathan Quick's stellar play in net.
Quick won't be on the ice, however, and the stakes not nearly as high when the teams meet Friday night. With their star goaltender injured, the Kings continue their Eastern road trip when they visit the Devils.
Los Angeles (12-6-1) won its only title in 2012, and the result was hardly in doubt during a 6-1 clinching win in Game 6. Quick earned the Conn Smythe Trophy in those playoffs, going 16-4 with a 1.41 goals-against average. He had three shutouts that postseason and a 1.10 GAA in the finals.
The Kings and Devils were scheduled to meet in Newark last season, but the game was canceled due to the lockout.
Quick is sidelined after suffering a strained groin late in overtime of Tuesday's 3-2 shootout loss at Buffalo that opened the four-game swing.
Los Angeles is also without Jeff Carter (lower-body injury), who scored four times in the Cup finals, including twice in Game 6.
Ben Scrivens filled in nicely for Quick on Thursday, making 23 saves, and Tyler Toffoli scored with 1:27 left to complete a third-period rally in a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders.
"Impossible to replace Quickie," Scrivens said. "I thought we played a very solid road game and did well on special teams. It was a solid team win all around."
Scrivens, who has never faced the Devils, has made all six of his appearances this season on the road. He has started twice and is 2-1-1 with a 1.92 GAA and one shutout.
The Kings could also use another strong performance from Toffoli. The right wing has three goals and four assists in five games since being recalled from the minors because of injuries to Carter and Kyle Clifford (upper-body).
Injuries also led to Wednesday's recall of Tanner Pearson, who promptly found the net in his regular-season NHL debut. Pearson appeared once in last season's playoffs after being drafted 30th overall in 2012.
The Kings and Devils (6-7-5) are both 3-0-1 in their past four games.
New Jersey is expected to get a lift with the return of Patrick Elias after the veteran missed six games because of upper-body soreness.
"It started getting better after five, six days, then I tried to skate a couple of days and it started getting tighter and tighter again," Elias told the team's official website. "I took a couple of days off to calm the muscles down and everything. It's better the last couple of days, no question."
The left wing has three goals and four assists in 10 games, earning one point in each of his last four. He has 14 points over the past 13 regular-season meetings with the Kings, but was held to two in the Stanly Cup finals.
The Devils have done well recently without him, beating the New York Rangers 3-2 on the road Tuesday after a 5-0 home win over Nashville two days earlier.
"The guys have been playing well, obviously," Elias said. "The last few games, they're playing good out there. It's tough to  them. They're creating chances. They're fun to watch now."
Martin Brodeur is also having an impact, winning five of his last six games with a 1.17 GAA and two shutouts after making 33 saves versus the Rangers. He had a 2.36 GAA while starting each game of the Cup finals against the Kings.
The Devils could also turn to Cory Schneider, who has stopped 48 of 50 shots to win both of his regular-season games against Los Angeles.
