| | | PHILADELPHIA: LAST SEASON: 42-30-10, 94 points. Finished 3rd in Metropolitan Division. Sixth in Eastern Conference. Lost to New York Rangers in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Craig Berube, 2nd season with Flyers (42-27-10); 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: C R.J. Umberger, LW Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, D Michael Del Zotto
LOST: LW Scott Hartnell, RW Steve Downie, LW Tye McGinn, C Kris Newbury, D Erik Gustafsson, D Bruno Gervais
PLAYER TO WATCH: Flyers center Claude Giroux. Back earlier than expected from an unspecified lower-body injury, Giroux needs to be in top form if the Flyers expect to play deep into the postseason. Giroux was selected last season as a Hart Trophy finalist, the league's MVP award. He matched a career high with 28 goals and finished third in the NHL scoring race (86 points).
OUTLOOK: The Flyers need Steve Mason to play again like a true No. 1 goalie and for Giroux to play like an MVP candidate for the Flyers to have a shot at ending their Stanley Cup drought. The Flyers are 0 for the Cup since they won consecutive Cups in 1974 and 1975 and seemed poised to build a dynasty. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs (1966-67) have suffered longer than any other team that was won at least one Stanley Cup. | | NASHVILLE: LAST SEASON: 38-32-12, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Western Conference.
COACH: Peter Laviolette, 1st season with Predators, 389-282-25-63 overall.
ADDED: F James Neal, F Olli Jokinen, F Mike Ribeiro, F Derek Roy.
LOST: Coach Barry Trotz, goaltenders coach Mitch Korn, F Patric Hornqvist, F Nick Spaling.
PLAYER TO WATCH: G Pekka Rinne. Even with Ribeiro needing to prove his personal issues have been handled, Rinne is the two-time Vezina Trophy finalist who anchors Nashville's defense. He only played 24 games last season after an infection in his surgically-repaired hip needed more surgery, keeping him on crutches for weeks. Rinne went 3-0-1 in his final four games and was the MVP of the World Championships.
OUTLOOK: The Predators missed the playoffs by three points with Rinne missing much of last season. Laviolette is expected to boost the Predators' offense and take advantage of the experienced forwards added during the offseason, and general manager David Poile has made it clear they must reach the playoffs. |

*Flyers-Predators Preview* ==========================
Philadelphia (14-14-6) at Nashville (22-9-2), 8:00 p.m. EDT
Nashville's Peter Laviolette is probably one of the top contenders for the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year.
Now he gets to show his previous employer how good of a job he is doing.
Laviolette faces the Philadelphia Flyers for the first time since they fired him after three games last season in Saturday night's matchup in Nashville.
Philadelphia (14-14-6) was outscored 9-3 in losing its first three games of 2013-14 - the fifth season in which Laviolette was in charge for part of one. That slow start was enough for Paul Holmgren, the club's general manager at the time, to decide to get rid of the coach who guided the Flyers to the 2010 Stanley Cup finals.
Holmgren, who has since been promoted to team president, said that Philadelphia had a poor training camp and didn't "look like a team at all" in explaining his rationale.
Laviolette's assistant, Craig Berube, took over and remains the Flyers coach.
Nashville (22-9-2) hired Laviolette on May 6. The southern climate may suit the coach who guided Carolina to the 2006 Stanley Cup title, and he brought along former Philadelphia assistant Kevin McCarthy.
The surprising Predators have the Western Conference's third-best record as they try to reach the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.
The Flyers, meanwhile, have been among the NHL's biggest disappointments as they sit outside the East's postseason picture. There are signs, however, that Philadelphia is poised to make a surge.
Led by red-hot play by a top line that includes NHL points leader Jakub Voracek and captain Claude Giroux, the Flyers have matched their longest win streak of the season by starting an eight-game road stretch with three victories.
"It's always nice to get the first six points on a road trip and we'll go home and enjoy our families and be ready when we come back," winger Wayne Simmonds said.
Philadelphia has scored 16 goals in the last three games, with Voracek totaling eight points to give him 46 overall.
Not far behind him is Giroux, who is third in the league with 41 points - six in this win streak. These players are first and second in assists, with 32 for Voracek and 30 for Giroux.
"We're trying not to look at the big picture," Giroux said. "Try to go game-by-game. Right now, we're focused on Nashville."
Vincent Lecavalier has scored three times in his last two games, with his fifth goal in Tuesday's 5-2 victory over Minnesota.
With Steve Mason out with an upper-body injury, Berube figures to start Ray Emery - whose 3.71 road goals-against average is the league's fifth-worst mark. His 3.57 GAA against Nashville is his fourth-worst against any club.
The Predators will likely turn to Pekka Rinne, third in the NHL with a 1.84 GAA. He has won both home starts against Philadelphia.
Nashville's three-game win streak ended with Rinne resting in Tuesday's 5-3 defeat at Boston.
Filip Forsberg leads all rookies with a team-high 32 points and gets his first look at the Flyers, seeking their first four-game road win streak since winning five in a row Dec. 2-15, 2011.
These teams split two shootouts last season.
