| | | PITTSBURGH: LAST SEASON: 51-24-7, 109 points. Won Metropolitan Division. Lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference semifinals.
COACH: Mike Johnston (first season, first NHL season).
ADDED: D Christian Ehrhoff, F Patric Hornqvist, C Nick Spaling, F Blake Comeau, G Thomas Greiss.
LOST: F James Neal, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sidney Crosby. Sid ''the Kid'' isn't so young anymore. It's been nearly a decade since he arrived in Pittsburgh and helped rescue a floundering franchise. He rolled to his second MVP Award in 2013-14 after racking 36 goals and 68 assists for a league-leading 146 points. A wrist injury slowed him in the postseason. He scored just once in 13 playoff games.
OUTLOOK: New coach, new general manager but same old expectations in Pittsburgh. It's been more than five years since they lifted the Stanley Cup, a drought that cost former coach Dan Bylsma his job. Johnston brings in a more structured philosophy. There may be growing pains early, but if Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are healthy, the Penguins will again be a threat to make a deep playoff run. | | NASHVILLE: LAST SEASON: 38-32-12, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Western Conference.
COACH: Peter Laviolette, 1st season with Predators, 389-282-25-63 overall.
ADDED: F James Neal, F Olli Jokinen, F Mike Ribeiro, F Derek Roy.
LOST: Coach Barry Trotz, goaltenders coach Mitch Korn, F Patric Hornqvist, F Nick Spaling.
PLAYER TO WATCH: G Pekka Rinne. Even with Ribeiro needing to prove his personal issues have been handled, Rinne is the two-time Vezina Trophy finalist who anchors Nashville's defense. He only played 24 games last season after an infection in his surgically-repaired hip needed more surgery, keeping him on crutches for weeks. Rinne went 3-0-1 in his final four games and was the MVP of the World Championships.
OUTLOOK: The Predators missed the playoffs by three points with Rinne missing much of last season. Laviolette is expected to boost the Predators' offense and take advantage of the experienced forwards added during the offseason, and general manager David Poile has made it clear they must reach the playoffs. |

*Penguins-Predators Preview* ============================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Pittsburgh (3-2-1) at Nashville (5-0-2), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The Nashville Predators acquired James Neal from the Pittsburgh Penguins to aid their transition from former coach Barry Trotz's defensive-minded system to a more dynamic one under Peter Laviolette.
With Neal as its leading goal scorer, Nashville is off to one of the best starts in franchise history and will try to remain the league's only team without a regulation loss Saturday night in the teams' first meeting since the trade.
Neal has scored five times for the Predators (5-0-2) and is well on his way to surpassing 20 goals for the seventh time in as many NHL seasons. He had 89 goals and 95 assists in 199 games with the Penguins, but registered two goals and two assists in 13 contests this past postseason.
Neal also dealt with a series of injuries the past two seasons that kept him out of 28 games and was traded June 27 for Patric Hornqvist and Nick Spaling.
"To get a player like James Neal, it's rare," Nashville captain Shea Weber said. "A guy that can score goals like him and can have an effect on a game, a big-game player. It's a big move for our franchise, and we were definitely excited to have him."
Neal kept that excitement going with his fifth career hat trick in Thursday's 3-2 victory over Chicago, which also entered without a regulation loss. Pekka Rinne made 30 saves to improve to 5-0-1 with a 1.62 goals-against average.
The Predators had an eight-game point streak to begin the 2010-11 season, going 5-0-3, and they haven't won six of their first eight since opening with eight consecutive wins in 2005-06.
Nashville will try to send the Penguins (3-2-1) to a third straight loss after they fell 5-3 to Philadelphia on Wednesday and let Detroit rally from a late two-goal deficit for a 4-3 overtime win the following night.
Pittsburgh allowed the Red Wings to tie the game in the final 2:39 of regulation and gave up the equalizer with 39 seconds left. The Flyers pulled away Wednesday with a three-goal third period, and the Penguins blew an early two-goal advantage in a 3-2 defeat to Dallas on Oct. 16.
"We just have to do a better job of protecting," captain Sidney Crosby said. "Just finding a way. You have to expect, when a team's down, they're going to be desperate, and you have to be more desperate."
Evgeni Malkin extended his season-opening point streak with an assist Thursday, giving him two goals and seven assists. Crosby and Hornqvist were held without a point for the second straight game after strong starts.
Crosby had four goals and five assists in the first four games, and Hornqvist had four goals and four assists.
Crosby has three goals and 11 assists in eight games against Nashville, including two goals and five assists during a four-game win streak in the series. Malkin has three goals and four assists during that run.
Rinne has given up a combined 12 goals in three of those losses while Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury has allowed one in each of the last three meetings.
Predators center Mike Ribeiro, owner of a five-game point streak, has three goals and five assists during a five-game streak against Pittsburgh.
