KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON: LAST SEASON: 38-30-14, 90 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Barry Trotz, 1st season with Capitals; 16th overall in NHL, 557-479-60-100.
ADDED: Trotz, GM Brian MacLellan, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen, G Justin Peters.
LOST: Coach Adam Oates, GM George McPhee, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Dustin Penner, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met.
MONTREAL: LAST SEASON: 46-28-8, 100 points; lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference final.
COACH: Michel Therrien, seventh season with Canadiens, 287-224-23-58.
ADDED: D Tom Gilbert, C Manny Malhotra, RW P.A. Parenteau, RW Jiri Sekac.
LOST: C Daniel Briere, RW Brian Gionta, D Josh Gorges, LW Thomas Vanek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: P.K. Subban: The 43rd overall pick in the 2007 draft solidified his status as a top-five defenseman in the NHL following a 2013-14 regular season in which he recorded 53 points (10 goals, 43 assists) in 82 games, and added another 11 (five goals and six assists) in 17 playoff games. And he isn't going anywhere. The Canadiens and Subban agreed to an eight-year, $72 million contract in the offseason.
OUTLOOK: The Canadiens earned the ire of playoff foes Boston and New York for on-ice antics and their off-ice loquaciousness. But teams don't dislike opponents who aren't good. The Canadiens are just that, and should find themselves in the playoffs come April.

*Capitals-Canadiens Preview* ============================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

Washington (42-25-10) at Montreal (47-22-8), 7:30 p.m. EDT

Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals have their sights set on finishing in the top three of the Metropolitan Division.

Getting there, however, won't be easy with a difficult stretch run, starting with the Atlantic-leading Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

Washington (42-25-10) occupies the Eastern Conference's first wild-card spot, but it's just one point behind the New York Islanders for third in the division with five games to go. Unfortunately for the Capitals, each of their remaining contests are against teams who have already clinched a postseason berth or are in the playoff picture.

Washington hits the road seeking a third consecutive victory after beating Carolina 4-2 on Tuesday. Ovechkin scored for the third time in two games to become just the sixth player to record six 50-goal seasons.

"The potential there to put up staggering numbers, all-time numbers, is incredible. He's almost at 500 before he's 30 years old," teammate Brooks Laich said. "And his game has changed, too. Even defenses have changed. He's done it on the left side; he's done it on the right side. ... He's a treat to play beside."

Ovechkin is a near lock to win his third straight Maurice Richard Trophy and fifth overall as the league's top goal-scorer, and he ranks among the NHL leaders with 77 points. The Capitals have won nine of their last 11 when he scores at least once.

"We're sort of immune to it now, really," defenseman Mike Green said. "We don't expect it, but it's amazing how he does it every year. It's one of the most difficult things to do, and he seems to find a way to accomplish that, season after season."

Ovechkin has been held pointless in this season's first two games against Montreal, leaving him with 46 in 42 lifetime matchups - including playoffs. The Canadiens, who won 2-1 in a shootout on Oct. 9 and 1-0 in overtime Jan. 31, haven't swept the Capitals since taking all three meetings in 1990-91.

Montreal (47-22-8) is heading to the playoffs, but it's just one point ahead of Tampa Bay for the division lead after falling 5-3 to the Lightning on Monday. The Canadiens were outshot 31-13 through the first two periods and 44-28 overall, dropping to 1-2-1 in their last four games.

"This game really opened our eyes a little bit. We made mistakes on Monday that weren't characteristic of our playing style. That was the emphasis at practice," defenseman Tom Gilbert, hoping to return after missing the last four games with a fractured jaw, told the team's official website. "We just have to be better. We have to play intelligent hockey and bring a consistent effort."

Carey Price had allowed two goals or fewer in all but one of his previous 11 home starts before letting in four against the Lightning. The Vezina Trophy candidate is tied for the NHL lead with 41 wins and leads the league with a 1.92 goals-against average.

Price made 36 saves in his shutout victory over Washington, moving to 2-7-0 with a 2.95 GAA in his last nine in the series.

Counterpart Braden Holtby has stopped a combined 54 of 56 shots while starting both meetings this season. He's gone 5-0-2 against Montreal behind a 0.97 GAA, his lowest mark against any team he's faced more than once.

Holtby is 6-1-0 with a 2.18 GAA in his last eight overall. He'll need to be wary of Max Pacioretty, who has seven goals and 12 points over a nine-game home stretch for Montreal.

Pacioretty has been limited to five points in his last 15 games against Washington.
