KEY GAME INFORMATION
BUFFALO: LAST SEASON: 21-51-10, 52 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 16th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Ted Nolan, 4th season with Sabres (including 1995-97), 90-98-28; 6th overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Brian Gionta, LW Matt Moulson, C Sam Reinhart, D Josh Gorges, D Andrej Meszaros, C Cody McCormick, D Andre Benoit.
LOST: LW Ville Leino, D Christian Ehrhoff, D Henrik Tallinder, RW Matt D'Agostini, LW John Scott, C Zenon Konopka.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Reinhart. Selected with the No. 2 pick in the draft in June, the son of former NHLer Paul Reinhart is being given every opportunity to crack the season-opening lineup before his 19th birthday on Nov. 6. He was a play-making forward during three-plus seasons in the Western Hockey League, and is being counted upon to add immediate offense to a team that scored a post-NHL-expansion-era low 150 goals.
OUTLOOK: The Sabres can't be much worse after setting a franchise record for losses during a tumultuous season in which they changed their coach and general manager, and purged much of their veteran core, including trading goalie Ryan Miller. They've added veteran leadership (Gionta and Gorges) to complement their youth movement. And yet, the Sabres have too many questions marks - particularly in net, where Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth are competing for the starting job - to consider them playoff contenders.
MONTREAL: LAST SEASON: 46-28-8, 100 points; lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference final.
COACH: Michel Therrien, seventh season with Canadiens, 287-224-23-58.
ADDED: D Tom Gilbert, C Manny Malhotra, RW P.A. Parenteau, RW Jiri Sekac.
LOST: C Daniel Briere, RW Brian Gionta, D Josh Gorges, LW Thomas Vanek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: P.K. Subban: The 43rd overall pick in the 2007 draft solidified his status as a top-five defenseman in the NHL following a 2013-14 regular season in which he recorded 53 points (10 goals, 43 assists) in 82 games, and added another 11 (five goals and six assists) in 17 playoff games. And he isn't going anywhere. The Canadiens and Subban agreed to an eight-year, $72 million contract in the offseason.
OUTLOOK: The Canadiens earned the ire of playoff foes Boston and New York for on-ice antics and their off-ice loquaciousness. But teams don't dislike opponents who aren't good. The Canadiens are just that, and should find themselves in the playoffs come April.

*Sabres-Canadiens Preview* ==========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Buffalo (6-14-2) at Montreal (16-6-1), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Montreal Canadiens are tied for the most points in the NHL, while the Buffalo Sabres rank toward the bottom.

Still, it's the Sabres with a chance to sweep this home-and-home set.

Buffalo seeks a fifth win in six tries Saturday night while trying to send the Canadiens to their second three-game skid of the season.

Montreal (16-7-1) is tied with Vancouver and Anaheim with a league-leading 33 points, and the Sabres' 16 is only two more than NHL-worst Columbus.

Buffalo, though, has looked more like one of the better teams in the league lately, outscoring opponents 15-7 during a 4-1-0 stretch while the Canadiens have scored once in back-to-back defeats.

A fortuitous bounce helped the Sabres beat visiting Montreal 2-1 on Friday and end a six-game slide in the series. Matt Moulson's goal with 1:18 left came after a dump-in caromed awkwardly off the boards and caught Carey Price out of the net.

"It must be a lucky day, so I'll take it," Moulson said. "I don't think I've had one off the stanchion before."

That goal gave Moulson nine points in nine games. The left wing has eight goals and three assists in his last 11 meetings with the Canadiens, scoring three times in four visits to Bell Centre over that stretch.

Like Moulson, Tyler Ennis also had two points Friday, scoring an acrobatic goal by evading defenseman Alexei Emelin, leaping over Price in the crease and scoring with a backhand after falling with his back to the net.

"I was thinking I was going pretty fast through the zone, and if I could just take it to the net I'd get a chance," Ennis said. "I got the puck back up on my stick and got lucky."

The center has 10 points in 10 games against Montreal, and is putting together a strong stretch of his own with eight points in seven contests.

The Sabres could stick with Jhonas Enroth in net after he made 30 saves Friday in his third consecutive start. Enroth is 3-1-0 with a 1.37 goals-against average in four games, with one coming after Michal Neuvirth suffered a lower-body injury in the first period of a 4-1 win over San Jose on Nov. 18.

Neuvirth, though, has won his last two games at Montreal, stopping 58 of 60 shots with one shutout. He made 31 saves in 2-1 shootout loss to the Canadiens on Nov. 5.

After losing two of three on the road and totaling three goals, the Canadiens return home where they've averaged 3.7 goals during a 5-1-0 stretch.

Coach Michel Therrien isn't putting much stock in Friday's performance, chalking it up to bad luck due to the carom that led to Moulson's tally.

"It's a bad break," Therrien said. "There's nothing you can do against a bad break."

Price has started all 12 home games, compiling a 2.33 GAA. However, he could be rested in favor of backup Dustin Tokarski, who has won his last two meetings with Buffalo while stopping 60 of 61 shots.
