KEY GAME INFORMATION
ST LOUIS: LAST SEASON: 52-23-7, 111 points. Tied for third overall in Western Conference, lost in first round to Chicago.
COACH: Ken Hitchcock, third full season with Blues. 124-55-20. 657-405-178 overall in 18 seasons, seventh on career win list.
ADDED: C Paul Stastny, C Jori Lehtera, D Carl Gunnarsson, C Colin Fraser, F Robby Fabbri.
LOST: G Ryan Miller, D Roman Polak, F Vladimir Sobotka, F Brenden Morrow.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jaden Schwartz. Signing Stastny in free agency creates open ice for everyone else. Schwartz led team at plus-28 last season and scored 25 goals.
OUTLOOK: They've been among the NHL's best regular-season teams the last few seasons, and one of the stingiest, too. Last season they allowed the third-fewest goals, plus defensemen Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk are highly productive joining the rush. They appear to have enough firepower to contend for an ever-elusive first Stanley Cup, although as usual there's plenty of competition at the top of the Western Conference.
MONTREAL: LAST SEASON: 46-28-8, 100 points; lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference final.
COACH: Michel Therrien, seventh season with Canadiens, 287-224-23-58.
ADDED: D Tom Gilbert, C Manny Malhotra, RW P.A. Parenteau, RW Jiri Sekac.
LOST: C Daniel Briere, RW Brian Gionta, D Josh Gorges, LW Thomas Vanek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: P.K. Subban: The 43rd overall pick in the 2007 draft solidified his status as a top-five defenseman in the NHL following a 2013-14 regular season in which he recorded 53 points (10 goals, 43 assists) in 82 games, and added another 11 (five goals and six assists) in 17 playoff games. And he isn't going anywhere. The Canadiens and Subban agreed to an eight-year, $72 million contract in the offseason.
OUTLOOK: The Canadiens earned the ire of playoff foes Boston and New York for on-ice antics and their off-ice loquaciousness. But teams don't dislike opponents who aren't good. The Canadiens are just that, and should find themselves in the playoffs come April.

*Blues-Canadiens Preview* =========================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

St. Louis (12-5-1) at Montreal (14-5-1), 7:30 p.m. EDT

The NHL-leading Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues had been cruising along before getting shut out in their last game. Both teams will try to bounce back Thursday night in Montreal, where St. Louis has won six of seven.

The Canadiens (14-5-1) outscored opponents 23-7 during a six-game winning streak before falling 4-0 to Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Montreal went 0 for 3 on the power play and Carey Price stopped just 18 shots in his worst display of the season.

The Canadiens have been outscored 28-5 in their defeats.

"After winning six straight games, I think the Pittsburgh game was a reality check," forward Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau told the team's official website. "We made a few mental mistakes and missed out on some details. We didn't skate as well as we have in other games. The forecheck was the key to our success in the games that we'd won. We were lacking in those departments. We need to get back to that for the Blues."

St. Louis (12-5-1) had won three in row and 10 of 11 before opening a four-game road trip with Tuesday's 2-0 loss to Boston. The Blues outshot the Bruins 33-17 - including 15-3 over the final 20 minutes - but couldn't get anything past Tuukka Rask.

"We make our own luck, we have to put more in to get more out," forward David Backes told the league's official website. "We are not going to make excuses, we need to bring a little bit more to earn those spaces to get to loose pucks and find a way to whack a few in."

Although the Blues were held in check Tuesday, Montreal is expecting to get their best shot. St. Louis is allowing an NHL-low 1.89 goals per contest.

"They're a team that skates a lot, and they have a lot of talent in that group. They have excellent defensemen. They're a complete team, so we'll have to be ready. It's a big test for us," Parenteau said. "When you get blanked like St. Louis did, you rebound. That's the way things work in this league. I'm expecting a very competitive game."

The Canadiens have had their hands full with the Blues over the years. St. Louis has taken five straight in the series by an 18-7 margin and is 10-2-1 since 2000, including 6-1-0 in Montreal.

Alexander Steen scored twice in a 5-1 victory Dec. 19, giving him four goals and an assist over a three-game stretch against the Canadiens. Montreal will also need to be wary of emerging star Vladimir Tarasenko, who leads the Blues with 21 points despite coming up empty in back-to-back games.

Max Pacioretty has notched a team-high 16 points for Montreal, 13 of which have come at home. He's one of 10 Canadiens with at least eight points.

"That's going to be key here," Montreal forward Dale Weise said. "The only way you can stay a top team in this league is with consistent scoring from everybody."

Price is 8-3-0 with a 2.45 goals-against average at home. He's compiled a 3.31 GAA while starting each of Montreal's last five games against St. Louis.

The Blues are expected to turn to Jake Allen for his first appearance in the series. The second-year goalie, 5-1-0 with a league-leading 1.67 GAA, has allowed one goal total in winning two road starts.
