KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHILADELPHIA: LAST SEASON: 41-27-14, 96 points. Fifth in Metropolitan Division. Lost to Washington Capitals in first round.
COACH: Dave Hakstol (41-27-14, second NHL season)
ADDED: F Dale Weise, C Boyd Gordon.
LOST: D Evgeny Medvedev; F Ryan White, F R.J. Umberger.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Shayne Gostisbehere. The defenseman burst onto the scene as a rookie with 17 goals and 46 points in just 64 games. With his "Ghost" nickname, he became an instant fan favorite and is one of the core players the Flyers will build around. He has to prove he's no one-season wonder and his body can hold up for all 82 games.
OUTLOOK: The Flyers are celebrating their golden anniversary with a bang. There are tributes and alumni games planned and few teams showcase their history quite like the Flyers. But it's been 40 years since the Flyers last won a Stanley Cup and that number should grow by one this year. The Flyers should make the playoffs as a wild-card entry, but winning a series would make this season a success.
MINNESOTA: LAST SEASON: 38-33-11, 87 points. Finished fifth in Central Division. Lost to Dallas Stars in Western Conference quarterfinals.
COACH: Bruce Boudreau (first season, 10th NHL season).
ADDED: C Marc Staal, RW Chris Stewart.
LOST: LW Thomas Vanek, RW Justin Fontaine, LW Chris Porter, C Jarret Stoll, RW David Jones.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Mikael Granlund. The ninth pick in the 2010 draft, a cult hero in his native Finland, hasn't matched the hype with offensive production over his first four NHL seasons. But he has proved to be a hard-nosed defensive player and, playing all 82 games for the first time, posted a career-best 13 goals and 44 points last season. Granlund, who has been playing left wing on a line centered by captain and fellow Finn Mikko Koivu, is poised for a breakout in Boudreau's system.
OUTLOOK: With Granlund and fellow forwards Charlie Coyle, Nino Niederreiter, Erik Haula and Jason Zucker, plus defensemen Jonas Brodin and Matt Dumba, the Wild have a young core. Koivu, Staal, Zach Parise, Jason Pominville and defenseman Ryan Suter will all be 32 or older this season, so the time is now to make a move past the early rounds of the playoffs where they've been stuck the last four years. It's up to Boudreau to guide them there.
PREVIEW
Wild can clinch fifth straight playoff spot vs. Flyers

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- While the playoffs are all but inevitably looming dead ahead for the Minnesota Wild, the Philadelphia Flyers are seemingly getting farther away from the postseason all the time.

If the Wild win Thursday night when they host the Flyers, they would clinch their fifth consecutive trip to the playoffs. A Flyers win in Minnesota would be a rarity, as the team has struggled on the road.

Philadelphia comes to the Wild's home rink sporting a 2-4-0 record in its last six games, and a loss in Winnipeg on Tuesday typified the troubles the Flyers have had while wearing the road white sweater in the past few months.

"That's been a difference for us," Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said of his team's road woes. "That's how it is right now. This is one we needed here that we didn't get on the road."

In Winnipeg, the Flyers got off to a slow start, unable to get a shot on goal for a large portion of the first period. But the coach said the lack of shots didn't mean a lack of effort.

"Sometimes shots on goal aren't indicative," Hakstol said. "There were some pretty good plays that weren't on goal. Both teams came out and had some opportunities, but there wasn't a whole lot on net."

After miserable results for much of March, the Wild finally got back on the winning side of things in their last game, surviving a slog with the San Jose Sharks to win 3-2 and snap a five-game losing streak. It was a positive for sure, but Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau said he wants to see more before he believes his team is completely out of the funk that may have cost the Wild a chance to hang a Central Division champions banner.

"Anybody can do anything once," Boudreau said. "So let's see how we do Thursday."

Martin Hanzal, for whom the Wild paid a high price to acquire from the Arizona Coyotes in late February, has now scored exactly once, credited with his first goal in a Minnesota uniform in the win over San Jose. He didn't even know he had scored until seeing a replay of a goal originally credited to Jason Pominville, but he liked the boost in confidence the Wild got from just finding a way to win.

"It was a huge victory for us right now," said Hanzal, who has battled illness since the trade, in addition to his offensive struggles. "The way we were playing the last few games, sometimes it was even unlucky games we lost, but this was a really a huge win for us. It's going to build the confidence of the team."

As always, much of the Wild's success or lack thereof will hinge on Devan Dubnyk's play in goal. His win over the Sharks was Dubnyk's 37th of the season, which is a career best and tied a Minnesota record.

The Wild are playing four of their final five games in March at home, giving them ample chances to clinch a playoff trip before a friendly audience.
