PLAYER TO WATCH: Flyers center Claude Giroux. Back earlier than expected from an unspecified lower-body injury, Giroux needs to be in top form if the Flyers expect to play deep into the postseason. Giroux was selected last season as a Hart Trophy finalist, the league's MVP award. He matched a career high with 28 goals and finished third in the NHL scoring race (86 points).
OUTLOOK: The Flyers need Steve Mason to play again like a true No. 1 goalie and for Giroux to play like an MVP candidate for the Flyers to have a shot at ending their Stanley Cup drought. The Flyers are 0 for the Cup since they won consecutive Cups in 1974 and 1975 and seemed poised to build a dynasty. PLAYER TO WATCH: Vanek signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Wild after spending his first nine NHL seasons in the Eastern Conference, primarily with Buffalo. Vanek will be counted on for a scoring boost for a team that tied for 24th in the NHL in goals per game, but with Zach Parise and former Sabres teammate Jason Pominville among the top six forwards the onus is not all on him.
OUTLOOK: After advancing past the first round for only the second time in franchise history with a dramatic upset of the Central Division champion Avalanche, the Wild are on track for more with the addition of Vanek and the development of young forwards Mikael Granlund, Charlie Coyle, Erik Haula and Nino Niederreiter. The goalie situation is the biggest concern, with Niklas Backstrom and Darcy Kuemper returning as the top two after an injury-laden season at the position that forced the Wild to give four different players 19 starts or more in the net. |

It's easy to see that the Minnesota Wild's main problem during a three-game slide is defense.
They'll need to fix that with the NHL's top duo in points coming to town.
Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux have combined for 84 points and look to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a third straight win Tuesday night.
Minnesota is 0-1-2 in its last three games, allowing 14 goals. That's not the kind of effort that coach Mike Yeo expects from the Wild (16-12-3).
"Clearly our defensive play is not where it needs to be right now," Yeo said. "For a team that prides itself on its defensive play and a team when we're on top of our game and playing our system well we're extremely frustrating to  , that generally gives us our best chance to win, we have to be much better there."
Philadelphia (13-14-6) features a lethal top line of Voracek, Giroux and Michael Raffl. That unit has combined for 14 points in consecutive wins to start this eight-game trip.
The Flyers fought back from two goals down both times, winning 7-4 over Toronto on Saturday and 4-3 in overtime at Winnipeg the next night on Voracek's second goal of the game.
"I think it showed a chemistry that we came back again," Voracek said. "It's a huge win."
Voracek leads the NHL with 44 points, with 11 in the last seven games. Giroux has 40, with 13 in the past nine.
The Flyers seek their first three-game road win streak since Feb. 1-March 2. They believe this trip, which ends Jan. 3 in New Jersey, can help them turn around their dismal season.
"We're kind of getting tighter as a team and playing more as a team," Giroux said. "Like I've said before, our chemistry off the ice is one of the best I've seen. We've just got to try to find a way to do it on the ice."
It's not clear if Steve Mason can return from a two-game absence due to an upper-body injury. Coach Craig Berube started Ray Emery on Saturday and gave 33-year-old Rob Zepp his NHL debut Sunday.
Yeo said he will decide who will start in goal Tuesday morning.
Darcy Kuemper allowed three first-period goals on 14 shots and was pulled for the fourth time in his last five home starts in Saturday's 6-5 overtime loss to Nashville. Niklas Backstrom replaced him.
Zach Parise had two goals and an assist and Ryan Suter added two assists to take his season total to 20.
The Wild feature one of the league's best penalty-kill units at 86.5 percent, though it has yielded a power-play goal in five of the last six games. The Flyers scored a power-play goal in eight straight before coming up empty in their last three.
Minnesota center Mikael Granlund could miss a second straight game due to illness.
The Wild took the first meeting Nov. 20 as Jason Zucker scored with 45.4 seconds left in a 3-2 road win even though the Flyers held a 39-29 edge in shots.
