| | | DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 40-31-11, 91 points, 5th Central Division. Made Western Conference playoffs as wild card, lost first-round playoff series in six games to top-seeded Anaheim.
COACH: Lindy Ruff, 2nd season with Stars, 40-31-11; 17th season overall in NHL, was 571-432-162 in Buffalo.
ADDED: C Jason Spezza, RW Ales Hemsky; G Anders Lindback, RW Patrick Eaves.
LOST: RW Alex Chiasson, D Aaron Rome, LW Ray Whitney.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jamie Benn. In his first season as the Stars captain, the 25-year-old Canadian ranked eighth in the NHL with 79 points and ninth with 34 goals. Both were career highs, as was his plus-21 rating. Benn has increasingly accepted his role as a leader on a team filled with plenty of 20-something players, and is part of a dynamic scoring line with Tyler Seguin.
OUTLOOK: With the experience of a hard-fought first-round series in their first season under veteran Ruff, the Stars expect to do more than just make the playoffs this time around. That is a reasonable goal with their added scoring punch. With Benn and Seguin on the front line, the Stars will have another line with 31-year-old former Ottawa teammates Spezza and Hemsky likely together. | | MINNESOTA: LAST SEASON: 43-27-12, 98 points. Lost to Chicago 4-2 in Western Conference semifinals after beating Colorado 4-3 in first round.
COACH: Mike Yeo, fourth season, 104-82-26.
ADDED: LW Thomas Vanek, LW Brett Sutter, D Justin Falk, D Stu Bickel.
LOST: RW Dany Heatley, LW Matt Moulson, D Clayton Stoner, C Cody McCormick, LW Mike Rupp.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Vanek signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Wild after spending his first nine NHL seasons in the Eastern Conference, primarily with Buffalo. Vanek will be counted on for a scoring boost for a team that tied for 24th in the NHL in goals per game, but with Zach Parise and former Sabres teammate Jason Pominville among the top six forwards the onus is not all on him.
OUTLOOK: After advancing past the first round for only the second time in franchise history with a dramatic upset of the Central Division champion Avalanche, the Wild are on track for more with the addition of Vanek and the development of young forwards Mikael Granlund, Charlie Coyle, Erik Haula and Nino Niederreiter. The goalie situation is the biggest concern, with Niklas Backstrom and Darcy Kuemper returning as the top two after an injury-laden season at the position that forced the Wild to give four different players 19 starts or more in the net. |

*Stars-Wild Preview* ====================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Dallas (4-2-4) at Minnesota (6-3-0), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The Minnesota Wild may be the last remaining team in the league without a power-play goal, but they're not having any problems scoring in other scenarios lately.
The Wild look to build on another comeback victory and make it five wins in six games Saturday night against the Dallas Stars.
Despite failing to score on any of its 27 power plays this season, Minnesota (6-3-0) ranks among the highest scoring teams in the NHL with 3.33 goals per game.
Since totaling two goals in consecutive losses, the Wild have scored 20 times - once short-handed - during a 4-1-0 stretch.
They've also been very adept offensively late in games.
Kyle Brodziak scored twice in the third period before Mikko Koivu and Jason Pominville converted in the shootout to secure a 4-3 win over San Jose on Thursday. That came two days after Minnesota rallied with three goals in the third for a 4-3 victory at Boston.
"It goes to show that you've got to play a full game to win, and we've been able to bounce back the last couple games. We didn't get off to the best start, but we hung with it and found a way," Pominville said.
Thomas Vanek is finding a way to be productive while still seeking his first goal after signing a three-year, $19.5 million deal with Minnesota on the first day of free agency. The left wing leads the team with seven assists and has three in two games, including one on each of Brodziak's goals Thursday.
"He's an incredible passer," Brodziak said. "He's got great vision and he sees the ice very well. I pretty much knew both of those ones were going to be on my tape."
Minnesota is expected to be without Jared Spurgeon (upper-body injury), whose six points tie him with Ryan Suter for the team lead among defensemen.
"Another test for the depth of our D-men," coach Mike Yeo told the team's official website. "When you lose somebody, there's always more opportunity. There ends up being opportunity for someone like Marco (Scandella), there ends up being more opportunity for someone who was playing a different role or wasn't in the lineup.
"What you want are those guys to come in and really rise to the occasion."
Dallas (4-2-4) is looking for anyone to do that as it tries to snap a three-game slide, which continued with an uneven performance in a 2-1 overtime loss to Anaheim on Friday. The Stars managed just one shot in the second period and none on three power plays.
"I just don't think we were playing the right way," captain Jamie Benn said. "They're playing back-to-back. We didn't really skate well, either."
Tyler Seguin is in search of a bounce-back effort after his seven-game point streak ended Friday. All of his team-high seven goals and eight assists on the season came during that stretch.
He's collected six points in six career meetings with Minnesota, tallying a goal and two assists in a 4-3 home win March 8.
Benn also found the net in that matchup, but he doesn't have a point in the past two visits to St. Paul. The left wing had five goals and six assists during a seven-game point streak of his own that ended Friday.
These teams split four meetings last season with the home team winning each. The Wild have won five of six home matchups and three straight versus the Stars.
