KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: LAST SEASON: 37-30-15, 89 points. Ninth overall in Western Conference.
COACH: Dave Tippett, fifth season with Arizona, 156-96-42; In 10th NHL season as coach, 427-252-107.
ADDED: C Sam Gagner, C Joe Vitale, RW B.J. Crombeen, G Devan Dubnyk.
LOST: RW Radim Vrbata, C Mike Ribeiro, D Derek Morris, LW Paul Bissonnette, G Thomas Greiss.
PLAYER TO WATCH: C Antoine Vermette. As Ribeiro struggled late last season, Vermette surged to the forefront as Arizona's top center. He led the Coyotes with 24 goals last season and is a superb two-way player - a perfect fit for Tippett's defense-first system. A bigger season could be on the horizon as the Coyotes lean on him more.
OUTLOOK: The Coyotes should contend for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Arizona lost captain Shane Doan for 12 games due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and goalie Mike Smith was out the final 10 games with a knee injury. Even with the injuries, the Coyotes finished two points out of the West's final playoff spot. Stay relatively healthy and get back to their defensive ways, they might be in the mix again this season.
MINNESOTA: LAST SEASON: 43-27-12, 98 points. Lost to Chicago 4-2 in Western Conference semifinals after beating Colorado 4-3 in first round.
COACH: Mike Yeo, fourth season, 104-82-26.
ADDED: LW Thomas Vanek, LW Brett Sutter, D Justin Falk, D Stu Bickel.
LOST: RW Dany Heatley, LW Matt Moulson, D Clayton Stoner, C Cody McCormick, LW Mike Rupp.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Vanek signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Wild after spending his first nine NHL seasons in the Eastern Conference, primarily with Buffalo. Vanek will be counted on for a scoring boost for a team that tied for 24th in the NHL in goals per game, but with Zach Parise and former Sabres teammate Jason Pominville among the top six forwards the onus is not all on him.
OUTLOOK: After advancing past the first round for only the second time in franchise history with a dramatic upset of the Central Division champion Avalanche, the Wild are on track for more with the addition of Vanek and the development of young forwards Mikael Granlund, Charlie Coyle, Erik Haula and Nino Niederreiter. The goalie situation is the biggest concern, with Niklas Backstrom and Darcy Kuemper returning as the top two after an injury-laden season at the position that forced the Wild to give four different players 19 starts or more in the net.

*Coyotes-Wild Preview* ======================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Arizona (2-2-1) at Minnesota (2-2-0), 8:00 p.m. EDT

While they continue to lock up their up-and-coming players for the long term, the Minnesota Wild hope their latest signee can help spark an offensive turnaround as they return from a three-game road swing.

A day after giving Charlie Coyle an extension, the Wild will try to avoid a third straight loss Thursday night against an Arizona Coyotes team that has struggled defensively.

Minnesota (2-2-0) made a move toward the future on Wednesday when it came to terms on a five-year, $16 million extension with the 22-year-old Coyle, who is in the third and last season of his entry-level contract.

The former first-round pick by San Jose had three goals and four assists in the playoffs last season and more recently has been moved to the second line to skate alongside Thomas Vanek and Mikko Koivu.

"The one thing that excites us is the way that Charlie's skating right now," coach Mike Yeo told the NHL's official website. "His speed is noticeable. It's been a real factor out there."

Coyle joins 21-year-old defenseman Jonas Brodin (six years, $25 million) and 22-year-old right wing Nino Niederreiter (three years, $8 million) as recent building blocks Minnesota has secured.

After producing a goal and an assist as the Wild scored eight times in consecutive wins over Colorado to open the season, Coyle did not have a point in 2-1 losses at Anaheim and Los Angeles.

Minnesota totaled two goals while its season-opening drought on the power play reached 0 for 16 versus hot goaltenders Frederik Andersen (4-0-0) and Jonathan Quick (3-1-1), but the club should have a better matchup against the Coyotes.

Mike Smith has allowed at least four goals in each of his three starts, going 1-2-0 with a league-worst 5.33 goals-against average. He's 3-5-1 with a 2.18 GAA in nine starts against the Wild, though he's given up seven goals while losing his last two.

"It's just about competing, getting better and feeling comfortable in the net and eventually it'll turn," Smith said after practice earlier this week.

The Coyotes (2-2-1) rank near the bottom of the NHL with 4.20 goals allowed per game after dropping their second straight with a 4-3 shootout loss at Nashville on Tuesday. Devan Dubnyk started between the pipes, finishing with 23 saves.

Since scoring five times in the first three games, Mikkel Boedker hasn't produced a point in his last two. The left wing had one goal in each game against the Wild when the Coyotes dropped two of three matchups last season.

Arizona won't have it easy against probable starter Darcy Kuemper, who has been one of the NHL's hottest goaltenders. The third-year pro has gone 2-1-0 with a 0.67 GAA, including two shutouts, in his three starts.

Making matters worse, the Coyotes won't have center Martin Hanzal for the second straight game due to a lower-body injury.

Arizona is 6-0-2 in St. Paul since the 2009-10 season.
