| | | WASHINGTON: ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - The patches of white in Alex Ovechkin's black hair are growing more pronounced.
He turned 28 this month, he is the captain of the Washington Capitals, and while the Russian wing is coming off a third NHL MVP trophy, what he does not have at this point is much in the way of playoff success.
``Of course it's hard (to) realize you're getting older. And, of course, you always want to be 24, 23 years old,'' Ovechkin said. ``But it's impossible. So you just move on.''
Eventually embracing the shift from left to right wing at the behest of rookie coach Adam Oates, Ovechkin led the Capitals into the postseason for the sixth consecutive time last spring. What also happened to Ovechkin and Washington for the sixth consecutive time: a first- or second-round exit.
``You can't say, like, `We're going to win the Stanley Cup. Of course, we would love to win the Stanley Cup. ... We're going to try to do it,'' Ovechkin said. ``But we just have to play every game like it's (our) last game.''
Very little has changed about the roster in the four-plus months since a 5-0 home loss in Game 7 of Washington's first-round series against the New York Rangers. Ask around the organization about what the expectations or aims should be for the Capitals during the 2013-14 season and, not surprisingly, the responses will vary.
Owner Ted Leonsis just hopes his team doesn't take for granted that it will reach the playoffs.
General manager George McPhee said: ``The objective always is to make the playoffs to give yourself a chance. And we'd love to go deep, and we'd love to win a cup.''
And forward Brooks Laich made quite clear his feeling that no one associated with the club should be satisfied by merely making it deeper into the playoffs than the Capitals have in the recent past.
``We're not looking to just get through the second round. If we do that and we go home ... after the third round, we're not going home and patting ourselves on the back,'' Laich said. ``The expectation within that locker room is to win the Stanley Cup.''
The Capitals open at the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 1. | | MINNESOTA: ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - That buzz created by signing two big stars turned out to be a false start for the Minnesota Wild.
First there was the lockout. Then they sputtered through a shortened season, barely made the playoffs and were bounced out quickly by the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.
Well, here's their chance to try again. Coach Mike Yeo kept his job, and the Wild added players around centerpieces Zach Parise and Ryan Suter.
Minnesota opens the season at home Oct. 3 against the Los Angeles Kings. |

*Capitals-Wild Preview* =======================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Washington (20-15-6) at Minnesota (21-17-5), 8:00 p.m. EDT
Alex Ovechkin managed to snap one of the longest point droughts of his career last time out, but he couldn't help the Washington Capitals end their losing streak.
Ovechkin and the Capitals will try to avoid a season high-tying fourth straight loss Saturday night and earn their first road win against a Minnesota Wild team that just snapped a lengthy skid.
Ovechkin had gone four games without a point, matching a career high, before scoring his NHL-best 31st goal Thursday against Carolina. The three-time MVP, however, also missed a penalty shot in the second period of a 4-3 overtime loss.
The teams combined for five goals in the first 4:34 of that frame and Washington only led for 40 seconds during that flurry of scoring.
"I know it's a fun game to watch, but we've got to be able to calm it down," forward Troy Brouwer said. "Whenever we score a goal - we had a couple of big goals that put us ahead there - we've got to be able to build off that and make sure that we're not giving them opportunities right away. It's been a problem all year."
The result dropped the Capitals (20-15-6) to 0-1-2 in their last three and put them on the verge of matching their four-game slide from Nov. 20-27. Washington is also 1-2-3 in its last six and 1-2-2 in its past five road games.
"I think our consistency is something that definitely needs to be worked on," Brouwer said. "We need to make sure we're playing the same game every night and not being a different team depending on who we're playing against."
Minnesota, meanwhile, is hoping to build on a 4-1 home win over Buffalo on Thursday, which ended a season-worst six-game skid. Niklas Backstrom earned his first win in net since Nov. 23 while playing in place of an ill Josh Harding.
"The biggest thing for us is we did all the small things. We got all the details right," said Backstrom, who stopped 19 shots. "That's something we have to build on."
Backstrom is expected to start again Saturday even if Harding's health improves, but the Wild will likely once again not have one of their top scorers, Zach Parise, available due to a foot injury.
Parise assisted on his team's first goal in Washington on Nov. 7 and Mikael Granlund gave Minnesota a 2-1 lead entering the third period. The Wild, though, gave up a tying goal to Marcus Johansson with 3:08 left in regulation, and Braden Holtby outdueled Harding in the shootout to give his team a 3-2 victory.
Ovechkin scored the opening goal in that game and has one in each of his last four matchups against the Wild. The Capitals have won the past two meetings - their only win streak in the series - but are 0-5-1 all-time in Minnesota.
Washington is visiting the Xcel Energy Center for the first time since Oct. 28, 2010.
