KEY GAME INFORMATION
COLUMBUS:

LAST SEASON: 29-46-7, 65 points. Missed playoffs by finishing last in the Western Conference.

COACH: Todd Richards, 2nd season with Blue Jackets, interim head coach last year, 18-21-2; 4th overall, 95-92-18 in NHL.

ADDED: RW Brandon Dubinsky, GT Sergei Bobrovsky, LW Nick Foligno, C Artem Anisimov, D Adrian Aucoin, D Tim Erixon.

LOST: RW Rick Nash; C Samuel Pahlsson; D Marc Methot; D Grant Clitsome; GT Curtis Sanford; D Brett Lebda.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Bobrovsky. Acquired in trade with Philadelphia, he'll likely either take over the starting job or push Steve Mason, who won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in the Blue Jackets' only playoff year in 2009 but has struggled in the past three seasons.

OUTLOOK: Coming off the worst record in the league, and with captain and lone offensive star Nash asking for a trade, the Blue Jackets transformed their roster by dealing him to the New York Rangers along with a minor-league defenseman and a third-round pick for Dubinsky, Anisimov, Erixon and a first-round pick. With three first-rounders this summer, new team president John Davidson is building for the future. These 48 games are hoped to be a first step back toward respectability.

MINNESOTA:

LAST SEASON: 35-36-11, 81 points.

COACH: Mike Yeo, 2nd season, 35-36-11.

ADDED: LW Zach Parise, D Ryan Suter, C Mikael Granlund, LW Torrey Mitchell, C Zenon Konopka, C Jake Dowell.

LOST: LW Guillaume Latendresse, RW Nick Johnson, LW Warren Peters, RW Jed Ortmeyer, D Mike Lundin, C Erik Christensen, D Kurtis Foster.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Parise and Suter are the headliners, their identical 13-year, $98 million contracts serving as July 4 fireworks over the NHL free agent market, but the Finnish sensation Granlund is being given a spot on the second line before his 21st birthday. The ninth overall pick in the 2010 draft is so popular in his home country that paparazzi follow him around town. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound, slick-with-the-stick scorer spent the lockout playing for the Wild's AHL affiliate. He had 20 goals and 31 assists in 45 games last season for his club in Helsinki.

OUTLOOK: The Wild had the league's best record at 20-7-3 at the 30-game mark but nosedived down the stretch under the weight of myriad injuries. After signing Parise, bringing Granlund over and getting Pierre-Marc Bouchard back from another lengthy concussion absence, the Wild have unquestionably the deepest and most talented group of forwards in the franchise's 13-year history. Staying healthy in a fast-paced condensed season will be critical, of course, but the key to making the playoffs for the first time in five years is on the blue line, where veterans Suter and Tom Gilbert will need help from young players like Jared Spurgeon, Clayton Stoner and Marco Scandella.

*Blue Jackets-Wild Preview* ===========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Columbus (1-3-1) at Minnesota (2-2-1), 8:00 p.m. EDT

Zach Parise and the rest of the Minnesota Wild's top line are living up to lofty expectations.

Collectively, the Wild are falling well short.

Parise looks to continue his offensive barrage and help Minnesota halt a three-game slide in a matchup with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.

Parise was born in Minneapolis and is the son of J.P. Parise, a former captain with the Minnesota North Stars, so joining the Wild (2-2-1) on a rich free-agent contract last summer seemed ideal.

The move combined with the free-agent acquisition of defenseman Ryan Suter, seemed to make Minnesota a legitimate contender in the Western Conference.

So far, it's working out well for Parise.

He has five goals and four assists after spending his first seven seasons with New Jersey. The left wing has also helped spark Minnesota's top line that also includes Dany Heatley and Mikko Koivu, who have six points apiece.

The Wild, however, have allowed 13 goals during a three-game skid and secondary scoring has been in short supply with Parise, Heatley and Koivu accounting for 10 of the team's 13 goals.

"If we're playing the right way, part of our identity is we're frustrating and difficult team to ," coach Mike Yeo said. "There's a couple things with that. One, let's make sure if you're not scoring that you don't get scored on. Two, you look at that top line and look at how they're scoring.

"They're playing the right way. They're executing the right way, they have the right mindset, and so let's learn from that."

That didn't seem to happen Sunday, when Parise, Heatley and Koivu did all the scoring in a 5-4 overtime loss at St. Louis.

"It doesn't matter, we lost the game," Parise said after scoring two goals for a second consecutive game and setting up another by Koivu.

Parise has four points in five games against Columbus (2-3-1) with three coming in a win with the Devils on March 23, 2010.

Koivu has been the most productive member of the top line versus the Blue Jackets, tallying 22 points in 23 career meetings and 12 in as many at home. Heatley is pointless in the past three matchups.

Columbus enters this game with some momentum after snapping a four-game slide with a 2-1 win over visiting Dallas on Monday. Vinny Prospal scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 24 shots as the Jackets earned their first victory since a season-opening shootout win at Nashville.

Derek Dorsett had the other goal for Columbus, which went scoreless on seven power-play opportunities and is 0 for 21 over the past four games.

"Every game's important this time of year, especially in a shortened season," said Dorsett, who is second on the team with four points. "The guys stuck with it and we got the two points."

Minnesota figures to have Niklas Backstrom in net after he made 29 saves against the Blues. He's lost his last two starts against the Blue Jackets, posting a 2.53 GAA.

He stopped 16 of 18 shots in a 3-1 loss to them at home Feb. 11.
