| | | PITTSBURGH: LAST SEASON: 51-24-7, 109 points. Won Metropolitan Division. Lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference semifinals.
COACH: Mike Johnston (first season, first NHL season).
ADDED: D Christian Ehrhoff, F Patric Hornqvist, C Nick Spaling, F Blake Comeau, G Thomas Greiss.
LOST: F James Neal, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sidney Crosby. Sid ''the Kid'' isn't so young anymore. It's been nearly a decade since he arrived in Pittsburgh and helped rescue a floundering franchise. He rolled to his second MVP Award in 2013-14 after racking 36 goals and 68 assists for a league-leading 146 points. A wrist injury slowed him in the postseason. He scored just once in 13 playoff games.
OUTLOOK: New coach, new general manager but same old expectations in Pittsburgh. It's been more than five years since they lifted the Stanley Cup, a drought that cost former coach Dan Bylsma his job. Johnston brings in a more structured philosophy. There may be growing pains early, but if Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are healthy, the Penguins will again be a threat to make a deep playoff run. | | LOS ANGELES: LAST SEASON: 46-28-8, 100 points. Finished third in Pacific Division. Won the Stanley Cup.
COACH: Darryl Sutter, 4th season with Kings, 98-57-24; 15th overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Adam Cracknell.
LOST: D Willie Mitchell, C Colin Fraser.
PLAYER TO WATCH: D Brayden McNabb. Mitchell's departure was the only significant change to the Kings' championship roster, and they hope the bruising McNabb can make the full-time NHL leap into his spot.
OUTLOOK: This tenacious, balanced team has won two of the last three Stanley Cup titles, playing a record 64 postseason games in that stretch. There's no reason to think the Kings can't contend for three crowns in four years, an NHL feat that hasn't been accomplished since Edmonton did it in 1990. |

*Penguins-Kings Preview* ========================
By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer
Pittsburgh (37-18-9) at Los Angeles (31-21-12), 10:00 p.m. EDT
After another losing streak moved them out of the Western Conference playoff picture, the Los Angeles Kings have quickly put themselves right back in the mix.
Coming off a victory over the top team in the East, the Kings may need another elite effort Saturday night against the surging Pittsburgh Penguins.
Following a 5-2 win at Edmonton on Tuesday that ended a three-game skid, Los Angeles (31-21-12) got past Montreal 4-3 on Thursday for its first shootout win in eight tries.
Marian Gaborik tied it with 45 seconds remaining in regulation and three shooters scored in the tiebreaker for the Kings, who led 2-0 after the first period.
"We came out with the right mindset, we came out shooting," defenseman Jake Muzzin told the team's official website. "That was big for us; it was nice to get the ball rolling to start. We had some opportunities to put the game away in the second and we couldn't ... but we shouldn't need the late game heroics if we capitalize on our chances."
Los Angeles sits two points behind Winnipeg for the second wild card in the West and two behind Calgary and Vancouver for second and third in the Pacific Division.
"We have little goals that we're trying to reach, and if we reach them, then we'll be a playoff team," coach Darryl Sutter said. "So it's all part and parcel."
The Kings were in the Pacific's top three prior to their recent losing streak.
Pittsburgh (37-18-9) is also jockeying for playoff position, although its chances of a postseason berth are far more likely. The Penguins have an 11-point advantage over second wild card Boston, but currently own third place in the Metropolitan Division.
The New York Islanders (87 points) and Rangers (85) both have an advantage on the Penguins (83), while the Canadiens (88) have taken over the conference's top spot.
Following a loss in Colorado on Wednesday, Pittsburgh maintained the pace Friday with a 5-2 win in Anaheim. Evgeni Malkin scored his 28th goal and Sidney Crosby clinched it with an empty netter for his 21st.
"You always like the way your team rebounds," coach Mike Johnston told Pittsburgh's official website. "If they're in a situation where you haven't played your best game, to come out and play a better game, especially against a top team, that's a good sign for our group."
Malkin has seven goals and 14 points in his last seven games, and the Penguins are 6-0-0 this season when both he and Crosby score.
Chris Kunitz, who got his fourth point in four games, scored twice in Pittsburgh's 3-0 win over Los Angeles on Oct. 30. Marc-Andre Fleury earned his second of eight shutouts this season in that one, while Los Angeles' Jonathan Quick sat in favor of Martin Jones.
Quick figures to be in net Saturday for his fourth straight start. He has won 10 of his last 12 appearances with a 1.96 goals-against average in that span - compared with a 2.52 GAA over his previous 43 games.
Fleury will also likely be in net after Thomas Greiss started Friday. Fleury has struggled to a 3.05 GAA in his last three starts, but is 5-2-0 with a 1.95 GAA against the Kings in his career.
