KEY GAME INFORMATION
BUFFALO: LAST SEASON: 21-51-10, 52 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 16th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Ted Nolan, 4th season with Sabres (including 1995-97), 90-98-28; 6th overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Brian Gionta, LW Matt Moulson, C Sam Reinhart, D Josh Gorges, D Andrej Meszaros, C Cody McCormick, D Andre Benoit.
LOST: LW Ville Leino, D Christian Ehrhoff, D Henrik Tallinder, RW Matt D'Agostini, LW John Scott, C Zenon Konopka.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Reinhart. Selected with the No. 2 pick in the draft in June, the son of former NHLer Paul Reinhart is being given every opportunity to crack the season-opening lineup before his 19th birthday on Nov. 6. He was a play-making forward during three-plus seasons in the Western Hockey League, and is being counted upon to add immediate offense to a team that scored a post-NHL-expansion-era low 150 goals.
OUTLOOK: The Sabres can't be much worse after setting a franchise record for losses during a tumultuous season in which they changed their coach and general manager, and purged much of their veteran core, including trading goalie Ryan Miller. They've added veteran leadership (Gionta and Gorges) to complement their youth movement. And yet, the Sabres have too many questions marks - particularly in net, where Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth are competing for the starting job - to consider them playoff contenders.
LOS ANGELES: LAST SEASON: 46-28-8, 100 points. Finished third in Pacific Division. Won the Stanley Cup.
COACH: Darryl Sutter, 4th season with Kings, 98-57-24; 15th overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Adam Cracknell.
LOST: D Willie Mitchell, C Colin Fraser.
PLAYER TO WATCH: D Brayden McNabb. Mitchell's departure was the only significant change to the Kings' championship roster, and they hope the bruising McNabb can make the full-time NHL leap into his spot.
OUTLOOK: This tenacious, balanced team has won two of the last three Stanley Cup titles, playing a record 64 postseason games in that stretch. There's no reason to think the Kings can't contend for three crowns in four years, an NHL feat that hasn't been accomplished since Edmonton did it in 1990.

*Sabres-Kings Preview* ======================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer

Buffalo (1-6-0) at Los Angeles (4-1-1), 10:30 p.m. EDT

The Los Angeles Kings have won a pair of Stanley Cup championships in the past three seasons while ranking near the bottom of the league in goals, and their offense hasn't exactly been lighting up the scoreboard to begin their latest title defense.

That is, of course, with the exception of That 70s Line.

Los Angeles looks to remain perfect on its homestand while dealing the Buffalo Sabres a fourth straight defeat Thursday night.

The Kings (4-1-1) ranked second-to-last in goals in 2011-12 and 26th last season, winning the Cup each year with major contributions from a strong penalty kill and solid goaltending from Jonathan Quick.

They've scored two goals or fewer four times and have netted just 14 this season, but 11 have come off the sticks of Tanner Pearson, Tyler Toffoli and Jeff Carter.

Los Angeles has won the first four of a six-game homestand after Toffoli scored in the first period and Pearson scored his team-best fifth - assisted by Toffoli and Carter - in the third of a 2-1 win over Minnesota on Sunday. Toffoli and Pearson each have seven points and Carter six, while no other King has more than two.

Though That 70s Line has shined, the rest of the offense has sputtered. Quick was forced to make 40 saves to improve his goals-against average to 1.86 in five starts, and the Kings snuffed out five Minnesota power plays.

Los Angeles has killed all 14 penalties on the homestand.

"We're winning, but we're winning maybe on penalty killing and goaltending right now, and we know that," center Jarret Stoll said. "We've got to be better in a lot of areas. Yeah, Quickie's being Quickie, and he's huge for us again."

Quick, who made 43 saves in last Thursday's 1-0 shootout win over St. Louis, has been up to the challenge.

"Sometimes on a longer homestand, it gets to be the same thing every day," Quick said. "It's good to get that level of competition on a homestand."

The Kings don't appear to be facing top-notch competition in this contest, though. Buffalo (1-6-0) has scored eight non-shootout goals and has been outscored 9-1 during a three-game skid after falling 4-1 to Anaheim on Wednesday.

Tyler Ennis netted his third goal with 5:06 left in the third to pull the Sabres within one. Buffalo, which began a four-game road trip, failed to convert either of its power plays and is 0 for 24 with the man advantage on the season.

"There are a lot of positives to take out of it," Ennis said. "It was a lot better game than the last few."

Buffalo has won three of the last four meetings with the Kings after a 3-2 shootout win in the last matchup Nov. 12. Jhonas Enroth, who suffered the only defeat in that stretch Nov. 7, could be back in net for this contest after Michal Neuvirth made 30 saves Wednesday.

Quick, who has won all three of his starts on this homestand with a 0.65 GAA, is likely to get the nod again. He's 3-0-0 with a 1.69 GAA in four career starts against the Sabres.

Buffalo coach Ted Nolan will be going up against his son, Jordan, who is a center for the Kings, for the first time in an NHL game.
