KEY GAME INFORMATION
CALGARY: CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Flames coach Bob Hartley acknowledged the obvious when he publicly praised the selection of defenseman Mark Giordano as Calgary's captain.

``Mark represents all the qualities that we set as a coaching staff and an organization,'' Hartley said. ``He is a quality man who is proud to represent the Calgary Flames both on and off the ice. We are very happy with (him) setting the example for our team, and especially our young players, as we move through this crucial yet exciting period in the history of the Flames franchise.''
Indeed, they will need all the help they can get. Calgary is coming off another disappointing season, and there are fewer and fewer stars around the locker room these days.
The Flames launched a complete rebuilding of the franchise at the trade deadline last season, and continued the overhaul during the offseason with a series of trades. A playoff berth doesn't seem likely this year, but Calgary will have a foundation for the future, if nothing else.
The Flames open vs. Washington on Oct. 3.

LOS ANGELES:
LOS ANGELES (AP) - After the most successful two-year stretch in franchise history, the Los Angeles Kings just want to keep it going.
That's because the Kings historically aren't used to good times. The 2012 Stanley Cup champions returned to the Western Conference finals last summer, winning six total playoff rounds - twice as many as this long-struggling team had ever managed in any two-year stretch.
To stay on top, Los Angeles plans to rely on the same unflashy, workmanlike style that allowed coach Darryl Sutter's club to raise the Cup for the first time.

*Flames-Kings Preview* ======================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer

Calgary (8-12-4) at Los Angeles (16-6-4), 10:00 p.m. EDT

The Los Angeles Kings have earned at least one point in 11 consecutive games, but leaving a few on the table recently has tempered their mood a bit.

Los Angeles looks to keep that steak alive by picking up two points Saturday night at home against a banged-up Calgary Flames team that has dropped three of four.

The Kings (16-6-4) are 7-0-4 during their run as Ben Scrivens has gone 5-0-4 with a 1.34 goals-against average. He's been the regular starter since Jonathan Quick, expected to miss at least another three weeks, suffered a Grade 2 groin strain Nov. 12.

Los Angeles beat Vancouver 3-2 on Monday following back-to-back overtime losses to New Jersey and Colorado, respectively, but it fell 3-2 to San Jose on Wednesday after an eight-round shootout.

"Obviously we'll take every point we can get, but we aren't satisfied by any means," said Scrivens, who made 38 saves against the Sharks. "We have a team that expects to win and we have a team that can win, so we have to find a way."

Despite the long point streak, the Kings have gained only four in that span on Pacific Division co-leaders Anaheim and San Jose, which are three points ahead of Los Angeles.

"I'd be concerned that we haven't gained any ground (during the streak)," coach Darryl Sutter said. "It tells you how good everybody is. Look at everybody that's in that position."

Jeff Carter scored Monday in his second game back after missing 10 with a lower-body injury, marking his first goal since scoring in the first meeting with the Flames on Oct. 21.

Los Angeles let at least a point slip away in that contest, as T.J. Brodie scored on the power play with 30 seconds remaining to give Calgary a 3-2 victory that ended its four-game skid in the series.

The Flames (8-13-4) have lost 12 of 16 since that contest, though, and are dealing with multiple injuries.

Most notably, standout rookie Sean Monahan is week to week with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot. Monahan is second among rookies in scoring with nine goals and six assists, but he missed Saturday's 5-2 loss to Anaheim and won't play in this contest before being evaluated again.

Defenseman Dennis Wideman broke his left hand in Wednesday's loss to Chicago, and he will have surgery that will force him to miss 6-8 weeks.

Calgary allowed the first three goals and couldn't recover Saturday despite goals from David Jones and Ladislav Smid.

"We don't want to make any excuses with injuries. Every team goes through that, and other guys just have to step up and be leaders," Smid said. "I thought we were really flat in the first period. We made some mistakes, had some turnovers and it pretty much cost us the game."

Reto Berra made 33 saves before being replaced by Karri Ramo, who stopped all four shots he faced.

Ramo will get his first start since Nov. 8 on Saturday. He made 27 saves in the first meeting with the Kings and is 2-4-1 with a 3.59 GAA in eight appearances.

Scrivens, who hasn't allowed more than two goals in his last nine starts, has never faced the Flames.
