KEY GAME INFORMATION
CAROLINA: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, 83 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 13th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Bill Peters, 1st season with Hurricanes; 1st overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Brad Malone, D Tim Gleason.
LOST: C Manny Malhotra, G Justin Peters, C Brett Sutter.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Eric Staal. The captain is coming off the most disappointing season of his career, with his 21 goals his fewest in an 82-game season since he was a rookie a decade ago. With a salary of $9.25 million, he's one of the highest-paid players in the game but he managed just one power-play goal last season. He had sports hernia surgery during the offseason, and a fresh start with the detail-driven Peters could be just what Staal needs.
OUTLOOK: No team in the current alignment of the Eastern Conference has a longer playoff drought than the Hurricanes, who haven't made the postseason since 2009. How quickly Peters' message of focus and personal accountability gets through to a largely unchanged roster will determine whether that streak finally ends this season.
EDMONTON: LAST SEASON: 29-44-7, 67 points, finished 14th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Dallas Eakins, second season with the Oilers, 29-44-7.
ADDED: D Mark Fayne, D Nikita Nikitin, F Benoit Pouliot, F Teddy Purcell.
LOST: D Anton Belov, C Sam Gagner, LW Ryan Smyth.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Justin Schultz: The Oilers signed the defenseman to a one-year, $3,675,000 deal on Aug. 29. Why one year? ''Justin is going to be a great player and a great Oiler. What we wanted to do as an organization is buy ourselves a little bit of time to negotiate a long-term deal,'' general manager Craig MacTavish said. ''We as an organization wanted a little more information, fully aware information can be expensive.''
OUTLOOK: Six straight years of drafting in the top 10 and stockpiling high-end young talent without showing tangible on-ice improvement tends to create skepticism.

*Hurricanes-Oilers Preview* ===========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Carolina (0-3-2) at Edmonton (2-4-1), 9:30 p.m. EDT

Although they're slowly getting closer to full strength, the Carolina Hurricanes remain the only winless team while their season-opening drought has stretched to a historic level.

The Edmonton Oilers have moved past their early struggles as they stand on the cusp of their longest home winning streak since the lockout-shortened 2013 season.

A night after their latest defeat, the banged-up Hurricanes will try to end a club-record six-game skid to open the season Friday night against an Oilers team seeking its third straight victory.

Two days after welcoming back last season's leading scorer Jeff Skinner and defenseman Andrej Sekera, Carolina (0-4-2) had defenseman John-Michael Liles back on the ice Thursday after a two-game absence with an upper-body injury.

Despite the recent additions, the Hurricanes haven't been able to stop their dreadful start as they set a team record for consecutive defeats to begin a season with Thursday's 5-0 loss at Calgary.

Carolina had previous five-game winless streaks to begin the 1987-88 and 2003-04 seasons.

"We've got to flip the page as fast as possible," forward Riley Nash told the NHL's official website. "It's tough to do right now because we haven't gotten any results, but we really haven't deserved any in the past couple of games here."

More reinforcements are on the way with Nathan Gerbe (lower body), Pat Dwyer (lower body) and captain Eric Staal (upper body) expected to return before the end of a five-game road swing that concludes Tuesday at Vancouver.

Skinner, who missed the first four games with a concussion, hasn't produced a point in his last two. He might be able to get going against the Oilers, scoring three times with three assists in his four career meetings.

Since posting three goals in each of their first three games, the Hurricanes have scored twice in the first three on their trip. They could have a difficult time breaking through against probable starting goaltender Ben Scrivens.

Scrivens is 2-1 with a 1.68 goals-against average in his last three games after going 0-2 with a 5.21 mark in his first three.

He's coming off an impressive 32-save performance Wednesday, helping the Oilers (2-4-1) hand Washington its first regulation loss with a 3-2 victory despite getting outshot 34-20.

Edmonton has recorded back-to-back victories on its seven-game homestand following an 0-4-1 start overall. They won three straight only twice all of last season and haven't won three in a row at home since late in the '13 season.

"It definitely lightens the load a little bit, especially getting that first one when you start out the first five winless," defenseman Mark Fayne said. "You've got to stay focused. You can't dwell on the past or even get too happy about past games because there are a lot left."

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Justin Schultz have scored for the Oilers in each of the last two victories. Nugent-Hopkins also has two goals and an assist in three career games against the Hurricanes.

Taylor Hall, who has a team-high four goals, had one with two assists to help Edmonton take both meetings last season.

After Cam Ward struggled at Calgary, Carolina could turn to Anton Khudobin in the second of back-to-back contests. Khudobin, 0-2-1 with a 2.64 GAA this season, is 1-1-0 with a 1.52 mark in three career starts against the Oilers.

The Hurricanes have dropped four of five in Edmonton, including a loss in Game 6 of the '06 Stanley Cup Final.
