| | | CALGARY: LAST SEASON: 35-40-7, 77 points, finished 13th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Bob Hartley, fourth season with Calgary, 383-291-61-45 overall.
ADDED: LW Brandon Bollig, D Deryk Engelland, G Jonas Hiller, LW Mason Raymond.
LOST: D Chris Butler, LW Mike Cammalleri.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Johnny Gaudreau. Offense was a major issue for the Flames, who finished 23rd and 24th, respectively, in goals per game (2.46) and power play percentage (15.7). Gaudreau, the reigning Hobey Baker winner, recorded 80 points (36 goals and 44 assists) in 40 games with Boston College.
OUTLOOK: With the possible exception of John Tortorella, who attempted to fight his way into the Calgary dressing room during the first intermission of a Jan. 18 game in Vancouver to ostensibly express his displeasure about a line brawl following the opening faceoff, Hartley and the Flames earned praise around the NHL for their hardworking style of play. Even with the addition of Gaudreau and friends to the lineup, don't expect the Flames to change their modus operandi. But it's too much to ask the Flames to compete for a playoff berth. | | DETROIT: LAST SEASON: 39-28-15, 93 points. Lost in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Mike Babcock, 10th season with Red Wings, 415-198-91; 12th overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Andy Miele, C Kevin Porter.
LOST: RW Mikael Samuelsson, C Cory Emmerton, C David Legwand, RW Todd Bertuzzi.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Gustav Nyquist. The 25-year-old Swede is coming off a breakout season in which he scored a team-high 28 goals in only 57 games. If the Red Wings are going to return to the NHL's elite, they're going to need younger players like Nyquist to grow into significant roles alongside aging stars like Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk.
OUTLOOK: If injuries mount like last season, the Red Wings may have to fight down the stretch to extend their streak of 23 straight playoff appearances. Datsyuk is expected to miss the start of the regular season with a separated shoulder. |

*Flames-Red Wings Preview* ==========================
By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer
Calgary (34-25-4) at Detroit (36-15-11), 7:30 p.m. EDT
The Detroit Red Wings have fared well against the Western Conference this season, but an overreliance on goaltending could derail that dominance.
They'll look for an improved defensive effort Friday night against the visiting Calgary Flames, who have showed they're capable of winning without captain Mark Giordano.
Detroit (36-15-11) topped the New York Rangers 2-1 in overtime Wednesday for its third straight win and first following a six-game road trip. Pavel Datsyuk set up the game-winning goal for his 13th point in nine games, and Henrik Zetterberg tallied two assists in his return to the lineup after missing four with a head injury.
That offensive production, however, would have been moot if not for Jimmy Howard. He stopped 39 shots in Wednesday's win, one game after Jonas Gustavsson faced 40 shots in Saturday's 4-3 victory over Nashville.
The Red Wings had not allowed 40 or more shots in consecutive games since March 28-30, 2011.
Coach Mike Babcock pointed to fatigue as a potential cause for their struggles, and expects to see an improved effort Friday.
"We better be a lot better than we were," Babcock told the Red Wings' official website following Thursday's practice. "We weren't real crisp today ... but I expect our energy to be back and us to have no reason to play a lot better than we did. We got to tighten up our game again and get back to the level we need to be at."
The Red Wings have fared far better offensively, especially on the power play. They lead the league with a 25.2 power-play percentage and have scored on the man advantage in three straight.
Detroit, which owns an NHL-best 16-3-3 record in interconference games, has 22 power-play goals in 22 games against Western Conference competition, and went 1 for 2 on the man advantage in a 3-2 win over Calgary on Jan. 7.
The Flames (35-25-4) went scoreless with the extra skater in that defeat as part of a 3-for-39 skid, but are 10 for 44 in their last 15 games after netting two Thursday in a 4-3 shootout win over Boston - their second in three tries since Giordano's season-ending injury.
"The teams were going for it," coach Bob Hartley told the Flames' official website. "We understand the importance of the two points and it was two teams that were very desperate."
Jiri Hudler scored and added an assist in Thursday's victory. Hudler, who played with Detroit from 2003-2012, is four goals shy of his career-best 25, but has failed to score in five career matchups against his former team.
Jonas Hiller figures to be in net Friday after Karri Ramo started the Flames' last five games. Hiller earned the loss on Jan. 7 after he replaced an injured Ramo in the second period.
Zetterberg scored and had an assist in that victory, Detroit's third straight one-goal win in the series.
