KEY GAME INFORMATION
COLORADO: LAST SEASON: 52-22-8, 112 points. Won the Central Division. Lost to Minnesota 4-3 in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Patrick Roy, 2nd season with Colorado, 52-22-8; 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Jarome Iginla, D Brad Stuart, C Daniel Briere, C Jesse Winchester.
LOST: RW P.A. Parenteau, F Paul Stastny, G Jean-Sebastien Giguere, D Andre Benoit, D Cory Sarich.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Nathan MacKinnon. As hard as this may be to believe, the speedy 19-year-old may have even gotten faster in the offseason working out with the likes of Matt Duchene and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. MacKinnon was the league's rookie of the year in 2013-14 after scoring 24 goals and dishing out 39 assists. Roy isn't concerned with a sophomore jinx with MacKinnon, saying, ''I think Nate's going to do a very good job this year despite the way people think about a second-year player.''
OUTLOOK: The Avalanche surprised the hockey world by winning the Central Division in Roy's first season. Now, Roy's eager to see his squad take the next step, which is to go even deeper into the postseason. The team added more veteran leadership by signing Iginla, along with trading for Briere and Stuart. They also have Alex Tanguay back after he missed most of the season with knee and hip injuries. Colorado boasts two formidable lines that will include some combination of Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, captain Gabe Landeskog, Iginla, Tanguay and MacKinnon. Roy is still tinkering to find the best pairings.
DETROIT: LAST SEASON: 39-28-15, 93 points. Lost in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Mike Babcock, 10th season with Red Wings, 415-198-91; 12th overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Andy Miele, C Kevin Porter.
LOST: RW Mikael Samuelsson, C Cory Emmerton, C David Legwand, RW Todd Bertuzzi.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Gustav Nyquist. The 25-year-old Swede is coming off a breakout season in which he scored a team-high 28 goals in only 57 games. If the Red Wings are going to return to the NHL's elite, they're going to need younger players like Nyquist to grow into significant roles alongside aging stars like Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk.
OUTLOOK: If injuries mount like last season, the Red Wings may have to fight down the stretch to extend their streak of 23 straight playoff appearances. Datsyuk is expected to miss the start of the regular season with a separated shoulder.

*Avalanche-Red Wings Preview* =============================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Colorado (10-13-8) at Detroit (17-8-8), 6:00 p.m. EDT

The Detroit Red Wings are on a slide reminiscent of last season's sustained struggles, and breaking from it will require overcoming the absence of their starting goaltender.

Jimmy Howard will miss Sunday night's home game against the Colorado Avalanche due to a lower-body injury as the Red Wings try to halt a five-game skid.

Offense, though, has been the main concern for Detroit (17-8-8), which has five goals over the 0-2-3 span. The Red Wings had losing streaks of six and seven games last season as they dealt with near-constant injury issues.

"Obviously you want to score more than one goal," Henrik Zetterberg told the team's official website. "Been like this the last few games. Still don't know the answer."

The latest setback was Friday's 2-1 home loss to the New York Islanders to fall to 0-1-1 to open a four-game homestand.

"I didn't mind tonight's game. I thought our effort was good," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "I would have liked to have seen us execute on a few plays a little better."

Zetterberg scored for the first time in 11 games, and the Red Wings' captain has just three points in eight games. Zetterberg has seven assists in his last five against the Avalanche (11-13-8).

Johan Franzen is without a goal in his last 13 games, but he's scored 14 in his last 16 contests against Colorado.

Petr Mrazek will start after replacing Howard, who is day to day, in the first period against the Islanders and allowing a goal on 23 shots.

"I thought Mrazek was fantastic coming off the bench," said Babcock, whose club will be looking to improve on a 5-1-0 record against the Western Conference and a 4-0-1 mark against Colorado dating to March 5, 2013.

Mrazek has been strong in three games this month, going 1-2-0 with a 1.90 goals-against average.

He's never faced Colorado, which is looking to end a road trip with a 2-0-1 record after Saturday's 5-1 win in Buffalo. It's also in position to potentially climb out of last place in the Central Division.

Rookie Calvin Pickard faced the Sabres, allowing a goal on 29 shots, and will oppose the Red Wings for the first time. Pickard also held Pittsburgh to just a goal in Thursday's 1-0 overtime loss to begin the road trip and is 2-1-2 with a 1.76 GAA since assuming No. 1 duties when the team lost Semyon Varlamov.

"I'm feeling comfortable, more and more so," Pickard said. "It's nice playing every game. I thought I had a good outing in Pittsburgh, too, and I just wanted to build off that."

It's been nearly a month since the Avalanche won back-to-back games on Nov. 22 and 25, going 3-4-3 since. The offense Saturday had to be a relief after managing five goals in their previous four games.

Alex Tanguay had two goals and an assist, Erik Johnson and John Mitchell had a goal and an assist each and Jarome Iginla added three assists.

"We skated, we moved the puck and we used our best tool, which is our speed," Tanguay said.

Tanguay has 11 points in 10 games, and Iginla has 11 in 12 after totaling 10 through his first 20 games with Colorado.

Co-Avalanche points leader Tyson Barrie has been held without a goal or an assist in his last six games. The defenseman's 20 points are tied with Matt Duchene, who has been limited to a goal and an assist in six games.

Detroit's penalty kill is 30 for 31 over the last seven games.
