KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA:

LAST SEASON: 35-36-11, 81 points.

COACH: Mike Yeo, 2nd season, 35-36-11.

ADDED: LW Zach Parise, D Ryan Suter, C Mikael Granlund, LW Torrey Mitchell, C Zenon Konopka, C Jake Dowell.

LOST: LW Guillaume Latendresse, RW Nick Johnson, LW Warren Peters, RW Jed Ortmeyer, D Mike Lundin, C Erik Christensen, D Kurtis Foster.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Parise and Suter are the headliners, their identical 13-year, $98 million contracts serving as July 4 fireworks over the NHL free agent market, but the Finnish sensation Granlund is being given a spot on the second line before his 21st birthday. The ninth overall pick in the 2010 draft is so popular in his home country that paparazzi follow him around town. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound, slick-with-the-stick scorer spent the lockout playing for the Wild's AHL affiliate. He had 20 goals and 31 assists in 45 games last season for his club in Helsinki.

OUTLOOK: The Wild had the league's best record at 20-7-3 at the 30-game mark but nosedived down the stretch under the weight of myriad injuries. After signing Parise, bringing Granlund over and getting Pierre-Marc Bouchard back from another lengthy concussion absence, the Wild have unquestionably the deepest and most talented group of forwards in the franchise's 13-year history. Staying healthy in a fast-paced condensed season will be critical, of course, but the key to making the playoffs for the first time in five years is on the blue line, where veterans Suter and Tom Gilbert will need help from young players like Jared Spurgeon, Clayton Stoner and Marco Scandella.

DETROIT:

LAST SEASON: 48-28-6, 102 points. Lost to Nashville 4-1 in first round.

COACH: Mike Babcock, 8th season with Red Wings, 352-154-68; 10th overall, 421-216-19 in NHL.

ADDED: RW Damien Brunner, RW Mikael Samuelsson, RW Jordin Tootoo, G Jonas Gustavsson, D Carlo Colaiacovo.

LOST: D Nicklas Lidstrom, D Brad Stuart, LW Jiri Hudler, LW Tomas Holmstrom.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Brunner. The 26-year-old rookie led the Swiss league with 60 points last season. He might get a lot of chances to produce on a line with Henrik Zetterberg, a teammate overseas during the lockout, and Pavel Datsyuk.

OUTLOOK: Without Lidstrom and Stuart on the blue line, extending the franchise's postseason streak to 22 will be quite a challenge. The Red Wings, though, have a shot to be better offensively and in net with a series of subtle moves after failing to make a splash in the summer when free agents Zach Parise and Ryan Suter turned down their offers to play together in Minnesota.

PREVIEW
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PA SPORTSTICKER HOCKEY PREVIEW (MINNESOTA-DETROIT) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Wild-Red Wings Preview* ========================
Minnesota (16-10-2) at Detroit (14-10-5), 7:30 p.m. EDT
After ending a lengthy drought in one building, the Minnesota Wild now go into a place where they have not won in regulation in seven seasons.
The Wild can extend their season-high win streak to four Wednesday night when they take on Pavel Datsyuk and the Detroit Red Wings.
Minnesota (16-10-2) ended an 11-game slide in Vancouver with Monday's 3-1 victory behind goals by Charlie Coyle and Matt Cullen in the third period.
The Wild have not won in regulation at Detroit since Jan. 3, 2006, going 3-10-0 with two victories in overtime and one in a shootout. Minnesota fell 5-3 in its lone visit this season Jan. 25.
"It's only one game and now we'll move on to Detroit and that's another tough building to play in," center Mikko Koivu said.
Datsyuk has five points in two meetings with Minnesota this season, with Detroit losing 3-2 on the road Feb. 17. The winger can extend his point streak to five games - which would match a season high - after his three-assist performance Saturday in a 5-2 road victory over the Canucks.
Henrik Zetterberg scored twice to end a nine-game goal drought as the Red Wings (14-10-5) capped a three-game trip with their second straight win.
While Datsyuk is surging for Detroit, the Red Wings will try to slow down Zach Parise. Parise has three points against Detroit this year and seven in a 5-1-0 stretch for the Wild.
Red Wings rookie defenseman Brian Lashoff knows he faces a challenge.
"He's very aggressive on the puck and he never gives up and battles in the offensive zone for sure," Lashoff told the Red Wings' official website. "He's one of the tougher players that I've had to ."
Lashoff has made an immediate impact for Detroit, and an even greater one has been made by fellow rookie defenseman Jonas Brodin for Minnesota. The 19-year-old Brodin is fourth on the Wild in ice time and has scored goals in two of his last three games.
"Everybody knows about (Ryan) Suter, but Brodin is a player that's going to be known well in the league over time," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said.
Niklas Backstrom has posted a 2.14 goals-against average in his last six starts. He's 1-4-2 with a 3.17 GAA in eight career starts against Detroit.
"We're not a playoff team yet," Backstrom said. "We want to be a playoff team. We can't look too far ahead. We can't keep watching in the standings what other teams are doing. For us, it's just to play the right way night in and night out."
Jimmy Howard is 4-0-1 with a 1.36 GAA in his last five starts, and 5-0-2 with a 1.98 GAA in seven at home against Minnesota.
The Wild have scored on the power play in nine of their last 11 games, including four straight on the road. Detroit's penalty kill is at 88.2 percent over its last 16 games after it was 73.3 in the first 13.
Minnesota defenseman Tom Gilbert missed Monday's contest with an undisclosed injury. He had a goal and an assist at Detroit in January.
