KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY ISLANDERS: LAST SEASON: 34-37-11, 79 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing eighth in Metropolitan Division and 14th in Eastern Conference.
COACH: Jack Capuano, fifth season with Islanders (118-120-39).
ADDED: G Jaroslav Halak, G Chad Johnson, C Cory Conacher, RW Jack Skille, LW Harry Zolnierczyk, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Nikolai Kulemin.
LOST: G Evgeni Nabokov, D Radek Martinek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: John Tavares. The 24-year-old star center with the C on his sweater is back after missing New York's final 22 games last season due to a knee injury sustained while playing for Canada in the Olympics. He was second on the team with 66 points - including 24 goals - despite playing in only 59 games. The Islanders have made the playoffs only once (2013) since he was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft.
OUTLOOK: This will be a year of nostalgia for the Islanders as they play their final season at the Nassau Coliseum - their home since joining the NHL in 1972 where four straight Stanley Cup champions were built from 1980-83. They will move to Brooklyn's Barclays Center next season. Since 2004, the Islanders have reached the playoffs just twice (2007 and 2013) and were eliminated in the first round both times. The task doesn't get any easier in the eight-team Metropolitan Division with perennial powerhouse Pittsburgh and the rival New York Rangers, who reached the Stanley Cup finals last season. Halak will shoulder a lot of the burden, along with Tavares, as he replaces veteran Evgeni Nabokov in goal.
DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 40-31-11, 91 points, 5th Central Division. Made Western Conference playoffs as wild card, lost first-round playoff series in six games to top-seeded Anaheim.
COACH: Lindy Ruff, 2nd season with Stars, 40-31-11; 17th season overall in NHL, was 571-432-162 in Buffalo.
ADDED: C Jason Spezza, RW Ales Hemsky; G Anders Lindback, RW Patrick Eaves.
LOST: RW Alex Chiasson, D Aaron Rome, LW Ray Whitney.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jamie Benn. In his first season as the Stars captain, the 25-year-old Canadian ranked eighth in the NHL with 79 points and ninth with 34 goals. Both were career highs, as was his plus-21 rating. Benn has increasingly accepted his role as a leader on a team filled with plenty of 20-something players, and is part of a dynamic scoring line with Tyler Seguin.
OUTLOOK: With the experience of a hard-fought first-round series in their first season under veteran Ruff, the Stars expect to do more than just make the playoffs this time around. That is a reasonable goal with their added scoring punch. With Benn and Seguin on the front line, the Stars will have another line with 31-year-old former Ottawa teammates Spezza and Hemsky likely together.

*Islanders-Stars Preview* =========================

By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer

New York (41-21-2) at Dallas (27-26-10), 8:30 p.m. EDT

The New York Islanders will need to play better against inferior competition to keep pace in a tight Metropolitan Division race.

After selling at the trade deadline, the Dallas Stars fit that category.

No longer with their third-leading goal scorer, the Stars look to avoid matching a season-worst seven-game losing streak Tuesday night against an Islanders team coming off a bad loss.

Dallas (27-26-10) may have waved the white flag Sunday when it traded Erik Cole to Detroit for prospects Mattias Janmark and Mattias Backman. Cole's 18 goals ranked behind only Tyler Seguin (29) and Jamie Benn (23).

"That's the business side of this sport and I don't like it," right wing Patrick Eaves told the Stars' official website. "Unfortunately where we are in the standings ... that's just the way it is."

Dallas is in last place in the Central Division and nine points behind Minnesota for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Without Cole and Seguin, who continues to recover from a knee injury, the Stars fell 3-1 to Anaheim on Sunday to drop to 0-4-2 in their last six. They outshot the Ducks 30-9 over the final two periods, but Jhonas Enroth surrendered two goals in the third.

Enroth has lost all four starts while giving up 16 goals since being acquired from Buffalo on Feb. 11. Kari Lehtonen figures to be back in net Tuesday, but he has been even worse with 14 goals allowed during an 0-1-2 stretch.

Benn had 10 points in the first six games following Seguin's injury, though he's gone two straight without one. He had an assist but was a minus-4 in a 7-5 road loss to the Islanders (41-21-2) on Oct. 25.

New York, opening a four-game road trip, owns the league's worst penalty kill at 74.4 percent and gave up two power-play goals Saturday in a 5-3 defeat to last-place Carolina. The Islanders are tied atop the Metropolitan with the New York Rangers, who have two games in hand and visit Long Island next Tuesday.

Backup Chad Johnson, who suffered the loss, was traded to Buffalo for Michal Neuvirth on Monday. Neuvirth owns a 2.99 goals-against average in 27 starts this season.

Jaroslav Halak has won seven of his last nine starts and stopped 26 shots in a 2-1 victory over Calgary on Friday.

New York also acquired winger Tyler Kennedy from San Jose. Kennedy has nine points in 25 games this season, but general manager Garth Snow is hoping he returns to the form he displayed in Pittsburgh, where he recorded double-digit goals in each of his first five seasons.

"Kennedy played extremely well against us a couple of years back," Snow told the Islanders' official website. "He obviously can bring that element of speed to our lineup. It was an area to improve our depth and we acted on it."

John Tavares has 14 points in the last nine games for New York to move into a tie for the NHL lead with 65. His 30 goals are one shy of his career best set in 2011-12.

Frans Nielsen scored three third-period goals in the first meeting as New York won its third straight in the series.
