KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: LAST SEASON: 37-30-15, 89 points. Ninth overall in Western Conference.
COACH: Dave Tippett, fifth season with Arizona, 156-96-42; In 10th NHL season as coach, 427-252-107.
ADDED: C Sam Gagner, C Joe Vitale, RW B.J. Crombeen, G Devan Dubnyk.
LOST: RW Radim Vrbata, C Mike Ribeiro, D Derek Morris, LW Paul Bissonnette, G Thomas Greiss.
PLAYER TO WATCH: C Antoine Vermette. As Ribeiro struggled late last season, Vermette surged to the forefront as Arizona's top center. He led the Coyotes with 24 goals last season and is a superb two-way player - a perfect fit for Tippett's defense-first system. A bigger season could be on the horizon as the Coyotes lean on him more.
OUTLOOK: The Coyotes should contend for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Arizona lost captain Shane Doan for 12 games due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and goalie Mike Smith was out the final 10 games with a knee injury. Even with the injuries, the Coyotes finished two points out of the West's final playoff spot. Stay relatively healthy and get back to their defensive ways, they might be in the mix again this season.
DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 40-31-11, 91 points, 5th Central Division. Made Western Conference playoffs as wild card, lost first-round playoff series in six games to top-seeded Anaheim.
COACH: Lindy Ruff, 2nd season with Stars, 40-31-11; 17th season overall in NHL, was 571-432-162 in Buffalo.
ADDED: C Jason Spezza, RW Ales Hemsky; G Anders Lindback, RW Patrick Eaves.
LOST: RW Alex Chiasson, D Aaron Rome, LW Ray Whitney.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jamie Benn. In his first season as the Stars captain, the 25-year-old Canadian ranked eighth in the NHL with 79 points and ninth with 34 goals. Both were career highs, as was his plus-21 rating. Benn has increasingly accepted his role as a leader on a team filled with plenty of 20-something players, and is part of a dynamic scoring line with Tyler Seguin.
OUTLOOK: With the experience of a hard-fought first-round series in their first season under veteran Ruff, the Stars expect to do more than just make the playoffs this time around. That is a reasonable goal with their added scoring punch. With Benn and Seguin on the front line, the Stars will have another line with 31-year-old former Ottawa teammates Spezza and Hemsky likely together.

*Coyotes-Stars Preview* =======================

Arizona (8-9-2) at Dallas (6-9-4), 8:30 p.m. EDT

The Arizona Coyotes are well aware of the Dallas Stars' home woes, and may have revenge on their mind Thursday night.

The Stars are making more line changes as they look to end a franchise-record seven-game home slide when they face the Coyotes.

Dallas (6-9-4) fell to 0-5-2 in its last seven at home with a fifth straight regulation defeat there, 6-4 to Carolina on Tuesday. This is the club's longest home winless run since a 10-game stretch that included three ties from Jan. 8-Feb. 11. 1996.

The Stars are 1-5-4 at home.

"Dallas lost again (Tuesday)," Arizona coach Dave Tippett said. "They've won one home game in 10 tries so that's going to be a hornet's nest we go into there."

The Stars are surrendering a Western Conference-worst 3.47 goals per game, allowing six in consecutive games.

"The message to the team is (be) better defensively," coach Lindy Ruff said. "That's the message to the team. You won't win games by giving up five, six goals."

Ruff made a change Tuesday by centering Cody Eakin alongside Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin on the Stars' top line. Benn ended an 11-game goalless drought.

The coach has now turned to his second line, replacing Erik Cole with Antoine Roussel on a unit that includes Jason Spezza and Ales Hemsky.

"The lines, there was a little bit of a hit and miss for me," Ruff told the Stars' official website. "I still don't think I have the right guy with the Spezza-Hemsky connection."

Patrick Eaves, who has missed the last three games with a lower-body injury, returned to practice and will be available Thursday.

Ruff will help his beleaguered blue line by inserting Jyrki Jokipakka, who was recalled from the minors Tuesday. The Finnish defenseman made his NHL debut last month, playing three times between Oct. 24-Nov. 1.

"He's going to play tomorrow," Ruff said. "I said coming out of training camp he was probably the guy that improved the most last year and pushed the most through training camp."

The Stars' Kari Lehtonen has yielded 10 goals in his last two starts. He is 6-1-0 with a 2.24 goals-against average in his last seven starts against the Coyotes, starting each time in Dallas' four-game home win streak in this series.

Arizona (8-9-2) starts a three-game trip with some confidence after going 2-0-1 in its last three games, with the victories coming on the road. The Coyotes are 4-0-1 in their last five road games.

Tippett credited a 4-3 defeat to the Stars on Nov. 11 as helping his club improve. Ryan Garbutt snapped a tie with 1:16 left with a short-handed goal for Dallas.

"If you look at the games before we went on that road trip, (a) devastating game, the one against Dallas, when we gave up a short-handed goal late," Tippett said. "Those games are hard to swallow. We've had some hard lessons to learn."

Garbutt won't be around for this one since he's out with an upper-body injury.

The Coyotes hope Martin Hanzal returns after he was a late scratch from Tuesday's 2-1 overtime loss to Washington with a lower-body injury.

Tippett figures to turn to Devan Dubnyk, who is 4-0-1 with a 2.13 GAA in five starts.
