| | | WASHINGTON: LAST SEASON: 38-30-14, 90 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Barry Trotz, 1st season with Capitals; 16th overall in NHL, 557-479-60-100.
ADDED: Trotz, GM Brian MacLellan, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen, G Justin Peters.
LOST: Coach Adam Oates, GM George McPhee, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Dustin Penner, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met. | | COLUMBUS: LAST SEASON: 43-32-7, 93 points. Eliminated in first round of playoffs by Pittsburgh in 6 games.
COACH: Todd Richards, fourth season with the Blue Jackets, 85-70-16; 5th overall in NHL.
ADDED: LW Scott Hartnell, RW Jerry D'Amigo, RW Brian Gibbons.
LOST: LW R.J. Umberger, C Derek MacKenzie, RW Jack Skille.
PLAYER TO WATCH: C Brandon Dubinsky. With two of the team's top centers unavailable (Ryan Johansen, holdout; Boone Jenner, broken hand), the fiery 28-year-old's role only grows bigger. He was already the heart and soul of a team that doesn't have an official captain, even though he would seem the likely choice. Coming off a year in which he had 16 goals and 34 assists and continually came up big late in games, he'll be counted on to provide even more points and leadership.
OUTLOOK: If the contract dispute between Johansen and the club isn't resolved soon, and with Jenner and Nathan Horton (bad back) out for the foreseeable future, the Blue Jackets may have to win a lot of 1-0 and 2-1 games in which G Sergei Bobrovsky stands on his head. Also, several young players (most likely Alexander Wennberg and Simon Hjalmarsson) may have to be gangbusters right from the outset to kill time until the club's at full strength. |

*Capitals-Blue Jackets Preview* ===============================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Washington (34-20-10) at Columbus (26-32-4), 7:00 p.m. EDT
The Washington Capitals' fortunes tend to be tied greatly to the first goal of a game.
Alex Ovechkin will try to get them off to a strong start again Tuesday night when they visit the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets.
Washington is a league-best 29-1-4 when scoring first, and its 5-19-6 record when giving up the opening goal is among the worst.
The Capitals (34-20-10) gave up the first goal each time during a three-game slide before Ovechkin scored 33 seconds into Sunday's 4-0 win over Toronto. The All-Star left wing finished with two goals and an assist and leads the NHL with 41 goals.
"I think it was a good response by us, to have a good start," Ovechkin said. "We scored a goal and it kind of takes the pressure off."
Another quick start by Washington, which is nine points clear of the playoff cutoff in the Eastern Conference, could be important since Columbus is 5-24-3 when yielding the opening goal.
Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom are tied with Philadelphia's Jakub Voracek and John Tavares of the Islanders for the most points in the league at 65. Backstrom had an assist Sunday after going a season high-tying three straight without a point.
They've both struggled at Columbus, combining for one point and a minus-8 while Washington has dropped three of the past four visits, including 4-3 on Jan. 27.
Washington's Braden Holtby had 26 saves in that meeting, and he owns a 3.11 goals-against average and 4-2-1 record in eight matchups. He made 32 stops Sunday for his seventh shutout, one back of Pittsburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury for the league lead.
Defenseman Tim Gleason made his Capitals debut Sunday after being acquired from Carolina a day earlier, and Curtis Glencross is slated to make his against the Blue Jackets (26-32-4).
The Capitals sent a pair of draft picks to Calgary for the left wing, who has nine goals and 19 assists in 53 games this season.
"You've got to come in and be confident and fit in the best way you can," Glencross told the team's official website. "There is a good group of guys in here. I knew a few guys prior to coming here, and that always helps. But it's a fun group in here. ... That's why they're such a good team and they've got good chemistry."
Glencross has three goals and an assist in his last four games against Columbus, which is one point ahead of last-place Carolina in the Metropolitan Division.
Columbus fell to 0-5-1 in its last six after losing 5-3 at Pittsburgh on Sunday. The Jackets were outshot 41-25 and allowed three power-play goals, all in the second period.
"We gave ourselves a good chance, but then penalties came into it and it's hard," said Nick Foligno, who had a goal for the first time in five games.
The left wing leads the team with career highs of 24 goals and 56 points. He's scored four times and added three assists in the last three against Washington.
Ryan Johansen has seven points in his last six games against the Capitals, scoring in the latest.
