KEY GAME INFORMATION
CAROLINA: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, 83 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 13th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Bill Peters, 1st season with Hurricanes; 1st overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Brad Malone, D Tim Gleason.
LOST: C Manny Malhotra, G Justin Peters, C Brett Sutter.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Eric Staal. The captain is coming off the most disappointing season of his career, with his 21 goals his fewest in an 82-game season since he was a rookie a decade ago. With a salary of $9.25 million, he's one of the highest-paid players in the game but he managed just one power-play goal last season. He had sports hernia surgery during the offseason, and a fresh start with the detail-driven Peters could be just what Staal needs.
OUTLOOK: No team in the current alignment of the Eastern Conference has a longer playoff drought than the Hurricanes, who haven't made the postseason since 2009. How quickly Peters' message of focus and personal accountability gets through to a largely unchanged roster will determine whether that streak finally ends this season.
COLORADO: LAST SEASON: 52-22-8, 112 points. Won the Central Division. Lost to Minnesota 4-3 in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Patrick Roy, 2nd season with Colorado, 52-22-8; 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Jarome Iginla, D Brad Stuart, C Daniel Briere, C Jesse Winchester.
LOST: RW P.A. Parenteau, F Paul Stastny, G Jean-Sebastien Giguere, D Andre Benoit, D Cory Sarich.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Nathan MacKinnon. As hard as this may be to believe, the speedy 19-year-old may have even gotten faster in the offseason working out with the likes of Matt Duchene and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. MacKinnon was the league's rookie of the year in 2013-14 after scoring 24 goals and dishing out 39 assists. Roy isn't concerned with a sophomore jinx with MacKinnon, saying, ''I think Nate's going to do a very good job this year despite the way people think about a second-year player.''
OUTLOOK: The Avalanche surprised the hockey world by winning the Central Division in Roy's first season. Now, Roy's eager to see his squad take the next step, which is to go even deeper into the postseason. The team added more veteran leadership by signing Iginla, along with trading for Briere and Stuart. They also have Alex Tanguay back after he missed most of the season with knee and hip injuries. Colorado boasts two formidable lines that will include some combination of Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, captain Gabe Landeskog, Iginla, Tanguay and MacKinnon. Roy is still tinkering to find the best pairings.

*Hurricanes-Avalanche Preview* ==============================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Carolina (6-10-3) at Colorado (6-9-5), 9:00 p.m. EDT

A subpar offense could find things more difficult if the Colorado Avalanche's top goal scorer is out for any significant amount of time.

It's uncertain if injured forward Alex Tanguay will be available Saturday night when the Avalanche look to continue their home dominance of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Tanguay had scored three of his team-leading seven goals over five games before injuring his jaw when he took a puck to the face on a shot by Alex Ovechkin in the second period of a 3-2 home loss to Washington on Thursday. The veteran forward, who turns 35 on Friday, immediately skated off the ice while holding his face.

"Like everyone, I saw he got a puck on the jaw," Colorado coach Patrick Roy said. "We'll know more, I guess (Friday)."

Colorado's 49 goals are among the fewest in the NHL, so it likely can't afford to be without Tanguay for too long after being held to two goals or fewer for the 12th time.

The Avalanche (6-9-5) also reside near the bottom of the league with a 13.4 percent conversion rate on the power play. They are 1 for 23 over the last eight contests and did not skate with the man advantage even once against the Capitals.

"Obviously, offensively we're going to have to simplify our game," Roy said. "I think we're looking too much for the perfect play right now, and we're going to have to just put pucks on net like we did on that goal."

Tyson Barrie got his team-leading 14th point with his second goal for Colorado, which returned home after splitting a four-game trip with back-to-back one-goal victories.

The Avalanche have totaled 40 goals while going 9-0-0 with a tie at home against the Hurricanes since that franchise relocated from Hartford prior to the 1997-98 season. Matt Duchene had two goals with an assist and Tanguay added one of each during Colorado's 4-2 home victory over Carolina last season.

After snapping a three-game skid with a 6-4 win at Dallas in the opener of a five-game trip, Carolina (6-10-3) fell 3-2 at Los Angeles on Thursday.

Jeff Skinner had a goal with an assist for the Hurricanes, who fell to 2-7-2 on the road but showed their mettle by twice rallying to tie the game before the Kings went ahead for good early in the second period.

Though Carolina recorded a power-play goal in a second straight game, it failed on all three chances in the first period.

"(We need a) little more pace by us on the breakouts and entries, and a little better execution," coach Bill Peters told the Hurricanes' official website. "We only generated one shot and not a serious scoring chance out of the three opportunities."

Carolina's Eric Staal has recorded all but one of his six goals and two of his six assists while earning a point in each of the seven road games he's played.

Teammate Cam Ward has allowed seven goals in two games after posting a 1.57 goals-against average while winning five of his previous seven. He's yielded nine goals on 69 shots while losing his only two starts at Colorado.
