PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met. | | COLORADO: LAST SEASON: 52-22-8, 112 points. PLAYER TO WATCH: Nathan MacKinnon. As hard as this may be to believe, the speedy 19-year-old may have even gotten faster in the offseason working out with the likes of Matt Duchene and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. MacKinnon was the league's rookie of the year in 2013-14 after scoring 24 goals and dishing out 39 assists. Roy isn't concerned with a sophomore jinx with MacKinnon, saying, ''I think Nate's going to do a very good job this year despite the way people think about a second-year player.''
OUTLOOK: The Avalanche surprised the hockey world by winning the Central Division in Roy's first season. Now, Roy's eager to see his squad take the next step, which is to go even deeper into the postseason. The team added more veteran leadership by signing Iginla, along with trading for Briere and Stuart. They also have Alex Tanguay back after he missed most of the season with knee and hip injuries. Colorado boasts two formidable lines that will include some combination of Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, captain Gabe Landeskog, Iginla, Tanguay and MacKinnon. Roy is still tinkering to find the best pairings. |

Alex Ovechkin's scoring has been down for a month, and games against the Colorado Avalanche have produced similarly uninspiring numbers for the Washington Capitals' three-time MVP.
He won't have to deal with goaltender and former teammate Semyon Varlamov when the Capitals conclude a three-game trip Thursday night in Denver.
Varlamov, a former Capital and Ovechkin's Russian Olympic teammate, is day to day after aggravating a groin injury, leaving Reto Berra to start for Colorado (6-8-5).
The Avalanche return home from a 2-2-0 trip in Eastern Conference buildings, which ended with Saturday's 3-2 win over New Jersey. They now face a sixth straight opponent from the East, a run that will conclude when Carolina visits Saturday. Thus far, it's kept Colorado afloat as it has gone 5-4-2 against the East while going 1-4-3 in its own conference.
The victory over the Devils came in come-from-behind fashion as Erik Johnson and Matt Duchene scored in the final eight minutes. Duchene has scored in consecutive games, the Avalanche's first back-to-back wins of the season, and he recognizes the contrast from 2013-14 when they won 15 of their first 20.
"We've had to will our way through this," Duchene told the team's official website. "It hasn't come easy, not for one second. Last year if we played liked we played against the New York Rangers (in Thursday's 4-3 shootout victory) we'd score five or six goals and we win easily in regulation.
"This year it's just not coming as easy for us but these are the types of wins that create those to come back. We're pushing hard and working and we'll get through this because we're a strong-character team."
Things have been a bit easier against the Capitals (8-7-3). The Avalanche have won four straight in the series, including a pair a season ago by a 9-2 total. Varlamov won both of those games with a .973 save percentage.
Berra has gone 1-1-1 with a 3.58 goals-against average in his last three starts, and he's never faced Washington.
In addition to Varlamov, the Avalanche will need to get used to the absence of defenseman Ryan Wilson, who will undergo shoulder surgery and miss the rest of the season.
The shuffling could make things easier on Ovechkin, who sores 0.62 goals per game for his career but has three in the last 14 and has been held without a point in three straight. The goal drought also featured a career-worst five-game pointless streak. He has one goal in eight career games against Colorado.
Tuesday's 2-1 overtime win in Arizona ended a two-game skid for the Capitals, though scoring concerns remain with two regulation goals in three games.
They're 0 for 7 on the power play in that time after converting 28.0 percent of their chances. Their penalty kill, meanwhile, has gone 13 for 13 over the last four games, which could be extended against a Colorado power play that's 1 for 23 over its past seven.
Braden Holtby has also been stingy, making 23 saves against the Coyotes and posting a 1.49 GAA over a 3-1-0 stretch.
"We really needed that," Holtby told the team's official website. "I thought we played well, especially in the third. I think (the Coyotes) kind of jammed everything up and were almost playing to get it to overtime. I think we did a good job of being patient and got rewarded for it."
