| | | SAN JOSE: SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Preparations for the upcoming campaign started early for the San Jose Sharks when they retooled their roster before last season's trade deadline.
A strong finish last spring, followed by a playoff run that ended in Game 7 of the second round, proved to the Sharks that those changes that made the team faster and more aggressive worked.
Now they hope that new identity carries over to this season and is just the right tonic to help one of the league's top regular-season teams over the past decade take that next step and make it to the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history. | | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Patrick Roy's fiery personality is already rubbing off on the Colorado Avalanche.
Just the other day in a scrimmage, captain Gabriel Landeskog mixed it up along the boards with Steve Downie. That feistiness is precisely what the new coach wants to see from a team that's missed the playoffs three straight seasons.
Roy is preaching a simple message: Take care of the little things on the ice, such as clearing loose pucks in front of the net.
Roy has some help, too, with former teammate Joe Sakic stepping into a broader role in the front office this season and handling the day-to-day hockey operations. |

*Sharks-Avalanche Preview* ==========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer
San Jose (26-9-6) at Colorado (25-11-4), 3:00 p.m. EDT
The Colorado Avalanche are getting back on track as their homestand continues, and they'll be looking to take advantage of a San Jose Sharks team that hasn't played very well on the road lately.
Colorado seeks a third straight victory Saturday when it meets San Jose, which has dropped six of eight away from home.
The Avalanche (25-11-4) have beaten a pair of Eastern Conference foes after an 0-1-3 stretch against the West that included a 5-4 shootout loss to the Sharks on Dec. 23. After a 2-1 overtime loss to Winnipeg on Sunday opened a seven-game homestand, Colorado beat Columbus 5-3 on Tuesday before Thursday's 2-1 win over Philadelphia.
Coach Patrick Roy's team is 4-0-1 over its last five at home.
"The message is clear: We don't want to be satisfied. We want more," Roy said. "That's the approach we try every day. We have to play like this to be in the playoff picture at the end."
Jamie McGinn and Ryan O'Reilly scored, and Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves against the Flyers. Varlamov is 5-0-4 with a 2.05 goals-against average in his last 10 games, including a 1.79 GAA in six starts at home.
"It seems that's the story every night," McGinn said. "We let him do his thing and we've got to put enough in because we know he's going to give his best."
Varlamov made 41 saves in the last meeting with San Jose, but he allowed the tying goal to Joe Pavelski with 20 seconds remaining in the third period. The Sharks improved to 12-0-3 in the last 15 meetings with the Avalanche, including the postseason.
Each of those defeats past regulation have come in the last four matchups in Denver, though. The Sharks (26-9-6) are 2-6-0 in their last eight on the road, giving up 31 goals, but they're coming off a 5-1 home win over Edmonton on Thursday.
Pavelski had a goal and an assist, and captain Joe Thornton had two assists for San Jose, which lost at Anaheim in its previous contest.
"We're a team that when you lose one, you like to get back and get the next one. I think we proved that," said Thornton, who had three assists in the last meeting with the Avalanche and has an 11-game point streak against them. "We have a lot of good character players in this room. There's no secret. Just get back to work. We didn't work as hard as we feel we should have in Anaheim and we got back to it."
Logan Couture and 32-year-old Bracken Kearns, who has played nearly 600 minor league games but just 10 in the NHL, each have scored in three straight games.
"I've seen him work so hard every day, and he's a guy that you admire," Couture said of Kearns. "I've had a lot different road to get to the NHL than he has. Now he's getting a shot and scores in three straight games. It's incredible. It gives you chills thinking about it."
Antti Niemi made 23 saves Thursday after giving up at least three goals in four of his previous five starts. He made 29 saves in the last meeting with Colorado and is 7-0-2 with a 2.13 GAA in his past nine starts against the Avalanche.
Varlamov is 1-3-2 with a 3.57 GAA in his last six versus San Jose.
