| |  | WASHINGTON: ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - The patches of white in Alex Ovechkin's black hair are growing more pronounced.
He turned 28 this month, he is the captain of the Washington Capitals, and while the Russian wing is coming off a third NHL MVP trophy, what he does not have at this point is much in the way of playoff success.
``Of course it's hard (to) realize you're getting older. And, of course, you always want to be 24, 23 years old,'' Ovechkin said. ``But it's impossible. So you just move on.''
Eventually embracing the shift from left to right wing at the behest of rookie coach Adam Oates, Ovechkin led the Capitals into the postseason for the sixth consecutive time last spring. What also happened to Ovechkin and Washington for the sixth consecutive time: a first- or second-round exit.
``You can't say, like, `We're going to win the Stanley Cup. Of course, we would love to win the Stanley Cup. ... We're going to try to do it,'' Ovechkin said. ``But we just have to play every game like it's (our) last game.''
Very little has changed about the roster in the four-plus months since a 5-0 home loss in Game 7 of Washington's first-round series against the New York Rangers. Ask around the organization about what the expectations or aims should be for the Capitals during the 2013-14 season and, not surprisingly, the responses will vary.
Owner Ted Leonsis just hopes his team doesn't take for granted that it will reach the playoffs.
General manager George McPhee said: ``The objective always is to make the playoffs to give yourself a chance. And we'd love to go deep, and we'd love to win a cup.''
And forward Brooks Laich made quite clear his feeling that no one associated with the club should be satisfied by merely making it deeper into the playoffs than the Capitals have in the recent past.
``We're not looking to just get through the second round. If we do that and we go home ... after the third round, we're not going home and patting ourselves on the back,'' Laich said. ``The expectation within that locker room is to win the Stanley Cup.''
The Capitals open at the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 1. | | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Patrick Roy's fiery personality is already rubbing off on the Colorado Avalanche.
Just the other day in a scrimmage, captain Gabriel Landeskog mixed it up along the boards with Steve Downie. That feistiness is precisely what the new coach wants to see from a team that's missed the playoffs three straight seasons.
Roy is preaching a simple message: Take care of the little things on the ice, such as clearing loose pucks in front of the net.
Roy has some help, too, with former teammate Joe Sakic stepping into a broader role in the front office this season and handling the day-to-day hockey operations. |

The Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals have thrived in different situations this season.
The Capitals have excelled on special teams with the NHL's best power play and an excellent penalty kill. The Avalanche have enjoyed most of their success in even-strength play with the league's third-best 5-on-5 goals for/against ratio of 1.70.
A home win Sunday night for the Avalanche would complete a two-game season sweep of the Capitals and extend their winning streak in the series.
Colorado (13-2-0) has won the last three meetings, including a 5-1 victory Oct. 12 in Washington. It was the Caps' most lopsided loss this season, despite a 41-28 edge in shots.
Alex Tanguay scored twice for Colorado, while Semyon Varlamov stopped 40 shots in his only career game against his former team.
The Avalanche are coming off Friday's 4-2 home win over Calgary. Ryan O'Reilly, Paul Stastny, John Mitchell and Matt Duchene scored to help the team match the 1994-95 Quebec Nordiques for the best 15-game start in franchise history.
The win followed a 6-4 home loss to Nashville on Wednesday.
"This was a big game for us. After going 12-1, you lose a game, it would be easy to go into bad habits and lose some," Colorado goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere said. "We ended up getting a big win. We should be happy with this one."
Giguere made 30 saves and improved to 5-0-0 with a .970 save percentage. He and Varlamov have combined for a 1.79 goals-against average and .944 save percentage.
Stastny's power-play tally was his fifth goal in five games after he scored only one in his first 10. It was also the team's first power-play goal in five games.
Duchene's empty-netter was his team-leading 11th goal and gave him nine points in his last six games.
The Capitals (9-7-1) scored three second-period goals and had a two-goal lead late in the third Saturday at Phoenix before falling 4-3 in a shootout to snap a four-game win streak.
"We got a point, I'm sure we're not happy right now, but we'll just recharge it for tomorrow," Washington coach Adam Oates said.
They entered the game a league-best 10 of 14 in shootout attempts but didn't put either shot on net against Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith. Three of their last four have ended in a shootout, and the Caps are 4-1 this season in games reaching that stage.
Troy Brouwer and John Carlson each scored with the advantage to bump Washington's already stellar power play to 28.2 percent.
Phoenix became the first team this season to score multiple power-play goals on the Capitals, going 2 for 6 after Washington came in having killed 56 of 62 chances.
"Too many penalties just in general," said Oates, whose team lost its lead while short-handed in the final 2 minutes. "You know it's going to come back and bite you and it did."
Three-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner Alex Ovechkin has only one goal in seven career games against Colorado, failing to score in the last six. He's scored at least two goals against every other team in the league.
