KEY GAME INFORMATION
EDMONTON:
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - The Edmonton Oilers have been stuck in rebuilding mode for some time, but the hope this season is that this youthful bunch - laced with first-round picks - returns to a place this franchise used to dominate.
The postseason.
Indeed, the Oilers - a once-dynastic franchise - has not qualified for the playoffs in seven straight seasons. But there is a benefit to Edmonton's on-ice failings: The Oilers have been able to stockpile high-end talent in defenseman Justin Schultz and forwards Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nail Yakupov, Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle.
Many inside and outside the organization believe Edmonton's collection of talent will eventually lead the Oilers back to a Stanley Cup, which would be their sixth. For now, though, a playoff berth would do just fine.
Edmonton opens against Winnipeg on Oct. 1.
CHICAGO: CHICAGO (AP) - The last time Chicago won the Stanley Cup, the team was dismantled during the offseason and the title defense ended in the first round of the playoffs.
Not so much this time. When the Blackhawks hit the ice next week for their opener against Washington, it will be a very familiar group.
Jonathan Toews (tayvz) and company are all set to go for their second consecutive NHL. There was no salary-cap purge this summer, leaving the Blackhawks largely intact as they try to become the first team to repeat since Detroit won it all in 1998.
The defending champs open the season at home Oct. 1 against Washington.

*Oilers-Blackhawks Preview* ===========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Edmonton (15-27-5) at Chicago (29-8-9), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Chicago Blackhawks are a loss away from doing something the Edmonton Oilers are a little more familiar with: dropping four straight.

In a reversal of recent roles, the Oilers head to Chicago on Sunday night chasing their third win in four games, while the slumping Blackhawks are looking to avoid their longest winless streak since 2011-12.

Chicago (29-8-10), the No. 2 scoring team in hockey with 3.53 goals per game, has scored five times during the three-game skid after a 2-1 overtime loss in Montreal on Saturday. The Blackhawks are 2-1-4 since Dec. 28.

"It's frustrating," goaltender Corey Crawford told the team's official website. "We expect to win, especially after coming back and tying it. We had a couple of chances after that. I think everybody in this room thinks we could have grabbed another point out of that one."

Marian Hossa scored midway through the third period to tie it, with Patrick Sharp and Jonathan Toews assisting. Sharp has 14 points in his last nine games, while Toews has 13 in the same span.

Crawford fell to 0-3-3 since Dec. 3 as the Canadiens held a 38-20 shot advantage, which is the widest margin Chicago has yielded this season.

Something it hasn't yielded this season is a regulation loss to a Pacific Division team. Chicago is 9-0-4 against the other side of the Western Conference while holding those clubs to 1.92 goals per game.

The Oilers (15-27-5) came from two goals down entering the third period Friday at home to beat Pittsburgh 4-3 in overtime. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored twice, including the winner on a power play.

"That shows a lot of character for us, and just to show we can play this way, it was a big game for us," said Nugent-Hopkins, who also had an assist. "There was no real deflation in the second intermission. When we get into trouble, we kind of deflate and don't bring that same effort and I thought we did a good job of not getting down on ourselves and we pushed back and we did a great job of sticking with it."

Nugent-Hopkins has 10 points in seven career games against Chicago, and Taylor Hall, who also scored Friday, has 18 in 12 games against the defending Stanley Cup champion.

Edmonton went 2-1-0 on its homestand, though it's dropped three straight on the road.

"It'll do nothing but give us confidence," Hall told the team's official website. "We're going into another building that's hard to play in, in Chicago. We should take confidence from this. The biggest thing is ... it wasn't a game where we got lucky or our goaltender stood on his head. Even though (Devan Dubnyk) played great, I thought for the most part we played pretty well tonight. I think that's a style of play that we can continue to play."

The Blackhawks have won three straight against the Oilers, the latest a 5-1 victory in Edmonton on Nov. 25. Chicago has 10 goals in two games against the Oilers this season. Dubnyk, who has started both of them, has a 4.16 goals-against average in nine career meetings with the Blackhawks.

Fellow Oilers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov has one win and a 3.72 GAA in his last five starts.
