KEY GAME INFORMATION
MONTREAL: LAST SEASON: 46-28-8, 100 points; lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference final.
COACH: Michel Therrien, seventh season with Canadiens, 287-224-23-58.
ADDED: D Tom Gilbert, C Manny Malhotra, RW P.A. Parenteau, RW Jiri Sekac.
LOST: C Daniel Briere, RW Brian Gionta, D Josh Gorges, LW Thomas Vanek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: P.K. Subban: The 43rd overall pick in the 2007 draft solidified his status as a top-five defenseman in the NHL following a 2013-14 regular season in which he recorded 53 points (10 goals, 43 assists) in 82 games, and added another 11 (five goals and six assists) in 17 playoff games. And he isn't going anywhere. The Canadiens and Subban agreed to an eight-year, $72 million contract in the offseason.
OUTLOOK: The Canadiens earned the ire of playoff foes Boston and New York for on-ice antics and their off-ice loquaciousness. But teams don't dislike opponents who aren't good. The Canadiens are just that, and should find themselves in the playoffs come April.
CAROLINA: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, 83 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 13th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Bill Peters, 1st season with Hurricanes; 1st overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Brad Malone, D Tim Gleason.
LOST: C Manny Malhotra, G Justin Peters, C Brett Sutter.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Eric Staal. The captain is coming off the most disappointing season of his career, with his 21 goals his fewest in an 82-game season since he was a rookie a decade ago. With a salary of $9.25 million, he's one of the highest-paid players in the game but he managed just one power-play goal last season. He had sports hernia surgery during the offseason, and a fresh start with the detail-driven Peters could be just what Staal needs.
OUTLOOK: No team in the current alignment of the Eastern Conference has a longer playoff drought than the Hurricanes, who haven't made the postseason since 2009. How quickly Peters' message of focus and personal accountability gets through to a largely unchanged roster will determine whether that streak finally ends this season.

*Canadiens-Hurricanes Preview* ==============================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Montreal (22-11-2) at Carolina (10-21-4), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Montreal Canadiens were upbeat entering a long Christmas break and are hoping another meeting with the worst team in the Eastern Conference will sustain the momentum.

The Canadiens can win for the sixth time in seven games Monday night by extending their recent dominance of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Montreal (22-11-2) followed a 1-5-1 stretch by outscoring opponents 21-8 while winning five of six. However, five of those games came at home and the Canadiens have dropped five of their last seven on the road.

They may be starting to reverse that trend after beating the New York Islanders 3-1 on Tuesday in the opener of a five-game trip.

"Winning on the road comes down to more than just systems and execution," defenseman P.K. Subban said. "It's going into another building and wanting to take the two points, not waiting to see what happens.

"We have to have that mentality because when you go into other buildings, teams aren't going to give you two points on their home ice, you gotta take it."

Alex Galchenyuk helped accomplish that at home against Carolina (10-21-4) on Dec. 16, recording his first career hat trick in a 4-1 victory that improved the Canadiens to 6-0-1 in the last seven meetings.

They've claimed eight of 10 points in their past five visits to Raleigh and Galchenyuk could be key to making it two more. He has four points in three games since last facing the Hurricanes, and his 10 goals are three shy of his career high set last season.

"When you're confident, there are a lot of things that are complicated are easier," the 20-year-old center said. "My confidence at a young age can go up and down real quick. Even with confidence, I want to be consistent. You can have one great game and one OK game, but you can't be too down on yourself.

"You have to be positive, and take the good with the bad."

Subban has 11 points in 14 career matchups with Carolina, but doesn't have a point despite being a plus-5 in the last three - all wins.

David Desharnais has seven points in four meetings, including five in the last two on the road. The center had two goals in a 4-1 win in the most recent visit to PNC Arena on Feb. 8, and he enters this one with five points in five games.

The Hurricanes entered the break on the heels of a 2-1 shootout win at New Jersey on Tuesday before falling by the same score in regulation at Tampa Bay on Saturday.

They've scored 14 goals during a 2-8-1 stretch, matching their production while losing seven of nine at home (2-6-1).

That's precisely why Cam Ward is 1-5-1 in his last seven starts despite a 2.29 goals-against average. He should be back in net after making 36 saves against the Lightning.

"He's been awesome," center Nathan Gerbe said. "We'd like to help him out a bit more and offensively put some goals in the net. Make life a little bit easier."

Ward is 3-0-1 with a 2.37 GAA in his last four home meetings with Montreal.

Carolina will reportedly have Jordan Staal in the lineup for the first time since he broke his leg in the preseason. The center had 15 goals and 25 assists last season.

"It's not fun to watch your team go through a rough patch," Staal told the team's official website. "I just try to be as supportive as I can, and when I get back, try to compete as best I can to get them in the right direction."
