KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO: CHICAGO (AP) - The last time Chicago won the Stanley Cup, the team was dismantled during the offseason and the title defense ended in the first round of the playoffs.
Not so much this time. When the Blackhawks hit the ice next week for their opener against Washington, it will be a very familiar group.
Jonathan Toews (tayvz) and company are all set to go for their second consecutive NHL. There was no salary-cap purge this summer, leaving the Blackhawks largely intact as they try to become the first team to repeat since Detroit won it all in 1998.
The defending champs open the season at home Oct. 1 against Washington.
CALGARY: CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Flames coach Bob Hartley acknowledged the obvious when he publicly praised the selection of defenseman Mark Giordano as Calgary's captain.

``Mark represents all the qualities that we set as a coaching staff and an organization,'' Hartley said. ``He is a quality man who is proud to represent the Calgary Flames both on and off the ice. We are very happy with (him) setting the example for our team, and especially our young players, as we move through this crucial yet exciting period in the history of the Flames franchise.''
Indeed, they will need all the help they can get. Calgary is coming off another disappointing season, and there are fewer and fewer stars around the locker room these days.
The Flames launched a complete rebuilding of the franchise at the trade deadline last season, and continued the overhaul during the offseason with a series of trades. A playoff berth doesn't seem likely this year, but Calgary will have a foundation for the future, if nothing else.
The Flames open vs. Washington on Oct. 3.

*Blackhawks-Flames Preview* ===========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Chicago (32-10-12) at Calgary (18-27-7), 9:30 p.m. EDT

The Chicago Blackhawks will try to break out of their slump with another successful road trip out west.

The Blackhawks, losers of seven of 10, will open that lengthy trek by attempting to earn a fifth win in six matchups with the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.

Chicago (32-10-12) appeared ready to get rolling again when it defeated a pair of the top teams in the league, Boston and Anaheim, on Jan. 17 and 19. Instead, the club has fallen back into its recent inconsistent ways, matching a season high with three ensuing defeats.

The Blackhawks outshot Winnipeg 27-6 in the first two periods Sunday, but lost 3-1 with the lone goal coming from fourth-line forward Brandon Bollig 1:21 into the game.

The Jets scored three times in the third while posting a 15-8 shot advantage to leave Chicago at 3-3-4 in its last 10.

"The last three games, it seems like we're back to that sloppy style of play," captain Jonathan Toews said. "We need to get rid of these bad habits and get rid of them fast."

Losers of a season-high three straight away from home, Chicago will play its next seven on the road with its six western games coming before the Olympic break. The Blackhawks went 6-1-0 in November during a western trip that included a 3-2 victory over Calgary (18-27-7) on Nov. 27.

"It's going to be a good test, especially against teams in their own building," forward Kris Versteeg said. "It's fun hockey. We should take it as a challenge and be excited about the opportunity ahead.

"We're going to have to go into Calgary and play ticked off."

Chicago is 4-0-1 in its last five against the Flames (18-27-7). Patrick Kane had two goals, including the tiebreaker with 18 seconds left, as the Blackhawks scored three times in the final 10 1/2 minutes at Calgary in November.

They also rallied in the third period against the Flames on Nov. 3 at home, but Calgary's Kris Russell scored in overtime for a 3-2 victory after Marian Hossa's late power-play goal in regulation.

The Flames have earned back-to-back wins to open a five-game homestand, ending a four-game skid with a 3-2 win over Phoenix on Wednesday and rallying for a 5-4 shootout victory over Nashville on Friday.

Calgary scored three times in the third period against the Predators, with David Jones' second goal of the period tying the score with 6:24 to go.

"It feels great. We've been on the other end of this so many times so to come back twice from two goals down, that means a lot for our team," Jones said.

Calgary will try to avoid a third straight home loss to Chicago and record its first three-game win streak since April 17-21.

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville will make his fourth attempt to pass Dick Irvin for third on the all-time wins list with his 693rd. His club hasn't dropped four in a row since a nine-game skid in 2011-12.

Kane has managed one goal and five assists in his last 13 contests, but he has six goals and five assists during a seven-game point streak against the Flames.
