KEY GAME INFORMATION
DALLAS: DALLAS (AP) - The Dallas Stars are starting over in their quest to end the longest playoff drought in franchise history.
There's a new general manager in Jim Nill, who hired a new coach in Lindy Ruff and overhauled the roster.
Ruff was the longest-tenured coach in the NHL when Buffalo fired him in the middle of last season. Now, he's trying to get the Stars back to the playoffs almost 15 years after he faced them in the Stanley Cup finals in 1999. Dallas won that title.
The biggest addition was Tyler Seguin, a two-time Stanley Cup finalist and one-time champion with Boston.
Forward Jamie Benn and goalie Kari Lehtonen are among the familiar faces for Dallas heading into the opener Oct. 3 against Florida.
CALGARY: CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Flames coach Bob Hartley acknowledged the obvious when he publicly praised the selection of defenseman Mark Giordano as Calgary's captain.

``Mark represents all the qualities that we set as a coaching staff and an organization,'' Hartley said. ``He is a quality man who is proud to represent the Calgary Flames both on and off the ice. We are very happy with (him) setting the example for our team, and especially our young players, as we move through this crucial yet exciting period in the history of the Flames franchise.''
Indeed, they will need all the help they can get. Calgary is coming off another disappointing season, and there are fewer and fewer stars around the locker room these days.
The Flames launched a complete rebuilding of the franchise at the trade deadline last season, and continued the overhaul during the offseason with a series of trades. A playoff berth doesn't seem likely this year, but Calgary will have a foundation for the future, if nothing else.
The Flames open vs. Washington on Oct. 3.

*Stars-Flames Preview* ======================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Dallas (9-7-2) at Calgary (6-9-3), 9:00 p.m. EDT

Although they're on a losing streak on their own ice, the Dallas Stars haven't had much trouble finding ways to win on the road lately.

Nothing has seemed to go right for the Calgary Flames during their longest skid of the season.

The surging Stars will try for their fifth straight road win Thursday night when they visit a Calgary team looking to avoid its fifth consecutive loss overall.

Dallas (9-7-2), which has dropped three straight at home, appears to have built some momentum during this stretch with six of seven on the road.

With two shootout wins and one overtime victory, the Stars swept the first leg that included stops in Ottawa, Boston and Detroit. After falling 5-2 to Chicago back home Saturday, they extended their road streak to four with Wednesday's 3-0 win at Edmonton in the opener of this three-game trip.

Rich Peverley opened the scoring in the second period before Antoine Roussel and Tyler Seguin provided late empty-netters to seal the win.

After allowing four goals on 30 shots against the Blackhawks, Kari Lehtonen bounced back with 22 saves Wednesday to earn his 23rd career shutout.

"He's one of the best in the league and he gives us a chance to win like that every night," Dallas' Shawn Horcoff said.

Lehtonen, however, might give way to backup Dan Ellis in this second of back-to-back games. Ellis, 1-3-0 with a 3.60 goals-against average, hasn't played since a 5-2 loss at Los Angeles on Oct. 19.

The Flames (6-9-3) hoped to build on an impressive 3-2 road win over the Blackhawks on Nov. 3, but instead they've been outscored 15-7 during four consecutive losses.

They also dropped their third straight at home Tuesday, getting outshot 35-13 in a 3-2 overtime loss to San Jose. Calgary fell behind by two in the first period, where they've been outscored 6-1 during the losing streak.

Defenseman Kris Russell had a power-play goal in the second period, snapping an 0-for-30 drought that covered more than 54 minutes over nine games.

Michael Cammalleri scored for the fourth time in his last three games to forge a 2-all tie before Brad Stuart won it in the extra session for the Sharks. Cammalleri has five goals and 10 points in his last four home games against the Stars.

"You can't sleep on good performances or bad performances too long," coach Bob Hartley told the team's official website. "We have Dallas, a team that is playing very well. There's no easy opponent in this conference."

In the only meeting this season, Lee Stempniak provided the Flames' only goal in a 5-1 loss at Dallas on Oct. 24.

Jamie Benn had a pair of goals for the Stars, giving him six in his last six games against Calgary. Alex Chiasson finished with two goals and an assist in that contest, but he's since gone scoreless in his last nine contests.

While the Stars have gone 3 for 47 with a man advantage over the last 13 games, the Flames have allowed one power-play goal in each of their last five. They're also giving up 3.50 goals per game overall - second-worst in the league.

Reto Berra stopped 32 of 35 shots against the Sharks, but has allowed 11 goals with an .872 save percentage while dropping his last three starts.

Calgary is 4-0-1 in its last five home games against Dallas.
