KEY GAME INFORMATION
ANAHEIM:

LAST SEASON: 34-36-12, 80 points. Missed playoffs by finishing 11th in the Western Conference.

COACH: Bruce Boudreau, 2nd season with Ducks, 27-23-8; 6th overall, 228-111-48 in NHL.

ADDED: D Bryan Allen, D Sheldon Souray, G Viktor Fasth, LW Daniel Winnik, RW Brad Staubitz.

LOST: D Lubomir Visnovsky, LW Niklas Hagman, D Sheldon Brookbank, G Dan Ellis.

PLAYER TO WATCH: C Ryan Getzlaf. The Ducks' top playmaker heads into his contract year coming off the worst statistical season of his decorated career. The NHL and Olympic champion needs a huge season with Corey Perry, who's also heading for free agency.

OUTLOOK: Anaheim bolstered its defense with Allen and Souray, but largely kept its offense intact despite last season's disappointments. Even with few changes, the Ducks believe their star-studded veteran roster should be in the playoff hunt again

CALGARY:

LAST SEASON: 37-29-16, 90 points. Missed playoffs by finishing ninth in Western Conference.

COACH: Bob Hartley, first season.

ADDED: D Dennis Wideman, LW Jiri Hudler, C Roman Cervenka.

LOST: C Olli Jokinen, RW David Ross, D Scott Hannan, RW Guillaume Desbiens, RW Tom Kostopoulous.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Tanguay, who played for Hartley a decade ago in Colorado, will be more familiar with the coach than his teammates. If he can click on the top line with Jarome Iginla, the Flames may have a puncher's chance.

OUTLOOK: Despite the addition of Cervenka, the Flames should be weak enough on defense to keep G Miikka Kiprusoff busy. If Tanguay and other forwards can click with Iginla, they may have a chance at catching lightning in a bottle, but in a tough division with the formidable Avalanche and Canucks, they would do well to nick the last playoff spot.

*Ducks-Flames Preview* ======================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

Anaheim (1-0-0) at Calgary (0-1-0), 9:00 p.m. EDT

Ageless wonder Teemu Selanne helped the Anaheim Ducks kick off their season in impressive fashion.

The Calgary Flames' opener didn't go nearly as well.

The Ducks look to make it two in a row Monday night as they face the Flames, who try to avoid dropping their first two home games for the first time in five seasons.

Even at 42, Selanne appears to have plenty left in the tank. The right winger, who contemplated retirement yet again during the lengthy lockout, tallied two goals and two assists Saturday as Anaheim (1-0-0) cruised to a 7-3 win at Vancouver.

"He defies age on certain nights," coach Bruce Boudreau said after the Ducks snapped a stretch of five straight season-opening defeats. "A 42-year-old getting four points in an NHL game ... it's quite amazing."

Selanne's 249th power-play goal tied him with Hall of Famer Phil Esposito for third all-time. He became the first player to record four points at age 42 since Gordie Howe in 1971.

"Physically, health-wise, I feel great," said Selanne, the league's oldest player. "But I know I need at least four or five games to get my legs back.

"To be honest, I can't wait until I start feeling good because it is going to be way more fun than this."

Selanne now tries to build on his big day against Calgary (0-1-0), which failed to get much going Sunday in a 4-1 loss to San Jose. Lee Stempniak gave the Flames a 1-0 lead, but the Sharks scored four unanswered goals to spoil coach Bob Hartley's first game at the helm.

Though Calgary outshot San Jose 28-15 in the first and third periods, the Sharks held a 14-4 advantage in the second, when they scored three times.

"We had everything in place for a great game but the bottom line, we played 40 minutes," Hartley said. "We have to show more consistency."

The Flames haven't opened with back-to-back losses on their own ice since going 0-1-1 in 2007-08.

"You leave that game behind and look forward to the next game and focus on that," center Mikael Backlund told the league's official website. "That's what we're going to have to be good at this year because it's a lot of games and a tight schedule. We have to really learn to forget about last game and move forward to the next one."

While Calgary has lost 15 straight at Anaheim, the Flames have more than held their own in this series at home, going 12-3-1 dating to February 2004.

Miikka Kiprusoff has been a big part of that success, compiling a 10-2-1 record, a 1.76 goals-against average and three shutouts. The veteran stopped 23 shots during a 1-0 overtime win last Jan. 12.

Jonas Hiller, meanwhile, can't be looking forward to visiting Scotiabank Saddledome, where he's gone 0-3-1 with a 3.02 GAA.

Besides Selanne, the Flames also need to be wary of Daniel Winnik, who scored twice in his Ducks debut. Fellow newcomer Sheldon Souray also came up big in his first game with the team, collecting a power-play goal and an assist. Anaheim converted all three of its chances on the man advantage Saturday.

"Scare goalies," captain Ryan Getzlaf said when asked what Souray's big shot brings to the power play. "He scares me still with that big shot. It's always a threat and that's going to allow us to get pucks to the net and open other guys up as the season moves on."
