KEY GAME INFORMATION
WASHINGTON: ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - The patches of white in Alex Ovechkin's black hair are growing more pronounced.
He turned 28 this month, he is the captain of the Washington Capitals, and while the Russian wing is coming off a third NHL MVP trophy, what he does not have at this point is much in the way of playoff success.

``Of course it's hard (to) realize you're getting older. And, of course, you always want to be 24, 23 years old,'' Ovechkin said. ``But it's impossible. So you just move on.''
Eventually embracing the shift from left to right wing at the behest of rookie coach Adam Oates, Ovechkin led the Capitals into the postseason for the sixth consecutive time last spring. What also happened to Ovechkin and Washington for the sixth consecutive time: a first- or second-round exit.

``You can't say, like, `We're going to win the Stanley Cup. Of course, we would love to win the Stanley Cup. ... We're going to try to do it,'' Ovechkin said. ``But we just have to play every game like it's (our) last game.''
Very little has changed about the roster in the four-plus months since a 5-0 home loss in Game 7 of Washington's first-round series against the New York Rangers. Ask around the organization about what the expectations or aims should be for the Capitals during the 2013-14 season and, not surprisingly, the responses will vary.
Owner Ted Leonsis just hopes his team doesn't take for granted that it will reach the playoffs.
General manager George McPhee said: ``The objective always is to make the playoffs to give yourself a chance. And we'd love to go deep, and we'd love to win a cup.''
And forward Brooks Laich made quite clear his feeling that no one associated with the club should be satisfied by merely making it deeper into the playoffs than the Capitals have in the recent past.

``We're not looking to just get through the second round. If we do that and we go home ... after the third round, we're not going home and patting ourselves on the back,'' Laich said. ``The expectation within that locker room is to win the Stanley Cup.''
The Capitals open at the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 1.

BUFFALO: BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Buffalo Sabres coach Ron Rolston is tempering his initial expectations after all the changes the team made over the past year.
Rolston is opening his first full season after taking over in February when Lindy Ruff was fired. And he's overseeing a roster that's been transformed following the team's youth movement over the past two seasons.
And more changes could be in store with goalie Ryan Miller and forward Thomas Vanek's futures uncertain beyond this season.
That has led Rolston to caution that he doesn't expect the Sabres to start revealing their true potential until a few months into the season.
Patience remains the watchword in Buffalo, for a franchise that's missed the playoffs in four of the past six seasons.
The Sabres open at Detroit on Oct. 2.

*Capitals-Sabres Preview* =========================

By ELI KABERON STATS Writer

Washington (23-21-8) at Buffalo (14-29-7), 7:30 p.m. EDT

With an offensive outburst in their last game, the Washington Capitals finally put an end to their long losing streak.

The Capitals will look to build on that performance Tuesday night when they visit the Eastern Conference-worst Buffalo Sabres.

Washington (23-21-8) scored a combined eight goals during its seven-game losing streak, so it was a surprise to see it light up the scoreboard Saturday night in Montreal. Alex Ovechkin got the scoring started in the second period with the first of the Capitals' four goals in an 8:45 span en route to a 5-0 win.

"It's a big win, a good win for the boys," Ovechkin said. "It brings some confidence back."

As relieved as it might have felt, Washington left some good scoring opportunities on the ice. The Capitals went 0 for 8 on the power the Canadiens, and have converted just 1 of 32 chances with the man advantage in their last nine games.

"The game of hockey, there's such a fine line. There's so many different subplots every single night." coach Adam Oates said. "It was one game, we scored some goals, but we have to face a great goalie again (on Tuesday), so here we go again."

It's unclear, however, if U.S. Olympian Ryan Miller will be in net - he hasn't started on back-to-back nights in seven chances this season - and the Capitals certainly have to be wishing he'll get a breather. Miller has stopped 77 of 79 shots he's faced from Washington this season in two shootout wins, denying all nine Capitals skaters he's seen in the tiebreaker.

Buffalo (14-30-7) snapped Columbus' franchise-record eight-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory on Saturday, but couldn't earn its first back-to-back wins since mid-December. Miller stopped 31 of 33 shots he faced in Pittsburgh on Monday but got no help in the Sabres' 3-0 loss.

Coach Ted Nolan was particularly discouraged with his team's effort in the first period, but it was the second when a pair of turnovers led directly to the Penguins' first two goals.

"We're a team where we can't have glaring mistakes," Nolan said. "It's very demoralizing."

The Sabres average just 26.4 shots - second-fewest in the league - but had scored at least three goals in six straight games before getting shut out in Pittsburgh.

Jason Chimera and Ovechkin have combined for seven of the Capitals' 13 goals over their past eight games.while Cody Hodgson has recorded four goals and three assists in the Sabres' last seven.

The Capitals have dropped three of their last four games in Buffalo and have scored a total of 17 goals in their last 10 visits.
