KEY GAME INFORMATION
CALGARY: LAST SEASON: 35-40-7, 77 points, finished 13th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Bob Hartley, fourth season with Calgary, 383-291-61-45 overall.
ADDED: LW Brandon Bollig, D Deryk Engelland, G Jonas Hiller, LW Mason Raymond.
LOST: D Chris Butler, LW Mike Cammalleri.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Johnny Gaudreau. Offense was a major issue for the Flames, who finished 23rd and 24th, respectively, in goals per game (2.46) and power play percentage (15.7). Gaudreau, the reigning Hobey Baker winner, recorded 80 points (36 goals and 44 assists) in 40 games with Boston College.
OUTLOOK: With the possible exception of John Tortorella, who attempted to fight his way into the Calgary dressing room during the first intermission of a Jan. 18 game in Vancouver to ostensibly express his displeasure about a line brawl following the opening faceoff, Hartley and the Flames earned praise around the NHL for their hardworking style of play. Even with the addition of Gaudreau and friends to the lineup, don't expect the Flames to change their modus operandi. But it's too much to ask the Flames to compete for a playoff berth.
BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 54-19-9, 117 points, most in the NHL. Lost to Montreal Canadiens in second round of playoffs.
COACH: Claude Julien, eighth season in Boston (310-165-65); 12th overall in NHL.
ADDED: F Simon Gagne, G Niklas Svedberg.
LOST: F Jarome Iginla, F Shawn Thornton, G Chad Johnson.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Defenseman Zdeno Chara is 37, and it's not clear how long his 6-foot-9 body can hold up. He played in 77 games, but had the least time on the ice (in a non-lockout season) since his arrival in Boston in 2006, and his fewest points and penalty minutes as a Bruin, too. He finished the season with a broken finger. Still, he was a finalist for the Norris Trophy, which he won in 2009.
OUTLOOK: After winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 and returning to the finals two seasons later, the Bruins posted the NHL's best record last season but were knocked out of the playoffs by the rival Canadiens in seven games in the second round. The Bruins return essentially the same team, including Selke Trophy winner Patrice Bergeron and Vezina winner Tuukka Rask, who led the league with seven shutouts, finished second with a .930 save percentage and was fourth with a 2.03 goals-against average.

*Flames-Bruins Preview* =======================

Calgary (34-25-4) at Boston (31-22-9), 7:00 p.m. EDT

An untimely injury means that the Boston Bruins won't be able to debut their top acquisition of the trade deadline.

The Bruins will be without newcomer Brett Connolly while Max Talbot will make his club debut in Wednesday night's home matchup with the Calgary Flames.

Boston (31-22-9) made a flurry of moves by Monday's trade deadline, picking up Connolly from Tampa Bay in the biggest one. Connolly, who has 12 goals and three assists in 50 games this season, was called a "a top-six forward" by general manager Peter Chiarelli.

Chiarelli won't see Connolly on the ice for the rest of the regular season. The forward took a puck to the hand in Wednesday's practice, broke his right index finger and will miss six weeks.

The Bruins lead Florida by two points in the race for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot. They have played two fewer games than the Panthers.

They also acquired forwards Talbot and Paul Carey from Colorado at the deadline. Talbot, who practiced Wednesday, is most famous for scoring both goals in Pittsburgh's 2-1 win over Detroit in Game 7 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final.

"He comes to play, and he'll do whatever he has to to fulfill his role," coach Claude Julien told the Bruins' official website. "So he's definitely a good addition to have with us, without a doubt."

Boston has won four straight at home over Calgary (34-25-4), capturing the last three visits by the Flames by a combined 16-0. Tuukka Rask posted the last two shutouts.

The Bruins' five-game overall win streak over the Flames ended with a 4-3 overtime loss Feb. 16. Boston blew a three-goal lead, as Jiri Hudler scored two in the third period for Calgary.

That kind of rally may not be unexpected since the Flames average a Western Conference-leading 1.22 goals in third periods.

Calgary's Johnny Gaudreau, second among rookies with 45 points, will play at TD Garden for the first time as a professional after playing there during a stellar career at Boston College.

"I might go over to Boston College and have some campus food with my buddies," Gaudreau told the Flames' official website. "We'll see. It's not too good anyways so it doesn't matter."

Calgary is continuing to adjust to life without star defenseman Mark Giordano, out for the season with a torn biceps muscle. The Flames won for the first time since Giordano suffered the injury last Wednesday as they beat Philadelphia 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday to improve to 2-2-0 on this seven-game trip.

Hudler had a goal and an assist to give him 50 points, two more than Giordano for the team lead. Karri Ramo, who has a 1.26 goals-against average in starting every game of this trip, made 35 saves.

"Rams is the story of our past two weeks," coach Bob Hartley said. "He's our best player. He's giving us lots of confidence, he's giving us key saves at the right time."

Calgary is tied with Los Angeles and San Jose for the final Pacific Division playoff spot.

The Flames lead the West with 9.10 takeaways per game and an average of 18.40 blocked shots. Kris Russell blocked eight shots Tuesday and leads the NHL with an average of 3.33.
