| | | BUFFALO: LAST SEASON: 21-51-10, 52 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 16th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Ted Nolan, 4th season with Sabres (including 1995-97), 90-98-28; 6th overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Brian Gionta, LW Matt Moulson, C Sam Reinhart, D Josh Gorges, D Andrej Meszaros, C Cody McCormick, D Andre Benoit.
LOST: LW Ville Leino, D Christian Ehrhoff, D Henrik Tallinder, RW Matt D'Agostini, LW John Scott, C Zenon Konopka.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Reinhart. Selected with the No. 2 pick in the draft in June, the son of former NHLer Paul Reinhart is being given every opportunity to crack the season-opening lineup before his 19th birthday on Nov. 6. He was a play-making forward during three-plus seasons in the Western Hockey League, and is being counted upon to add immediate offense to a team that scored a post-NHL-expansion-era low 150 goals.
OUTLOOK: The Sabres can't be much worse after setting a franchise record for losses during a tumultuous season in which they changed their coach and general manager, and purged much of their veteran core, including trading goalie Ryan Miller. They've added veteran leadership (Gionta and Gorges) to complement their youth movement. And yet, the Sabres have too many questions marks - particularly in net, where Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth are competing for the starting job - to consider them playoff contenders. | | BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 54-19-9, 117 points, most in the NHL. Lost to Montreal Canadiens in second round of playoffs.
COACH: Claude Julien, eighth season in Boston (310-165-65); 12th overall in NHL.
ADDED: F Simon Gagne, G Niklas Svedberg.
LOST: F Jarome Iginla, F Shawn Thornton, G Chad Johnson.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Defenseman Zdeno Chara is 37, and it's not clear how long his 6-foot-9 body can hold up. He played in 77 games, but had the least time on the ice (in a non-lockout season) since his arrival in Boston in 2006, and his fewest points and penalty minutes as a Bruin, too. He finished the season with a broken finger. Still, he was a finalist for the Norris Trophy, which he won in 2009.
OUTLOOK: After winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 and returning to the finals two seasons later, the Bruins posted the NHL's best record last season but were knocked out of the playoffs by the rival Canadiens in seven games in the second round. The Bruins return essentially the same team, including Selke Trophy winner Patrice Bergeron and Vezina winner Tuukka Rask, who led the league with seven shutouts, finished second with a .930 save percentage and was fourth with a 2.03 goals-against average. |

*Sabres-Bruins Preview* =======================
By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer
Buffalo (13-17-2) at Boston (16-14-3), 7:00 p.m. EDT
The calendar is yet to turn to 2015, but Boston coach Claude Julien knows where the Bruins will be four months into the new year if they continue at their current pace.
After a three-game road trip continued a disappointing stretch for the Bruins, they'll try to begin correcting things Sunday night against the visiting Buffalo Sabres.
Friday's 2-1 loss in Winnipeg completed a 1-1-1 trip, dropped the Bruins (16-14-3) to 2-5-2 in December and was their fourth defeat over five consecutive one-goal games.
"If we're happy with (three out of six points), we're going to be on vacation there in the beginning of April," Julien told the team's official website. "We're going to need more than that, to be honest with you. We've got to string some wins together here."
The power play went 0 for 3 to extend its drought to a 1-for-29 clip over 15 games.
Torey Krug scored against the Jets and did the same in his last game against Buffalo, giving the defenseman seven points over his last six in the series.
The Bruins are lacking production from some of their top players. Milan Lucic has been limited to five points over 16 games and David Krejci has just one in his last five - though he's missed a few chunks of time since Oct. 30.
"You just have to look at the scoresheet - there's guys that end up with no shots and all that stuff and you say, with the amount of ice and positions they're put in, they should be getting shots at the net," Julien said. "We need more out of certain players."
The Sabres (13-18-2), who have allowed 20 goals in five games, could help correct that. The Bruins opened the season series with two victories in Buffalo, and they've gone 5-1-1 with 3.71 goals per game versus the Sabres since the beginning of last season.
Brad Marchand had two goals and two assists in the two October meetings and has nine points in his last seven against Buffalo.
Tuukka Rask wasn't in goal for either and is 2-4-1 with a 3.28 goals-against average against the Sabres in his last eight starts. After taking the loss in Winnipeg, Rask has dropped six of seven this month with a 2.96 GAA.
Buffalo, though, has regressed with back-to-back 5-1 defeats after a 10-3-0 stretch, the latest coming Saturday at home against Colorado with Jhonas Enroth losing for the first time in five games.
"We've got a quick turnaround," Tyler Ennis told the team's official website. "We've got a little break at Christmas time so nothing to save it for. It's a big game and we've got to go pick up two points tomorrow."
Enroth has allowed 14 goals in four games but is 9-3-0 with a 2.37 GAA in his last 12 appearances. He took both losses two months ago to the Bruins and is 1-5-3 with a 3.78 GAA in 10 career meetings.
Michal Neuvirth's two starts this month have resulted in losses and a 4.03 GAA. He hasn't been much better against Boston, going 1-3-0 with a 3.66 GAA in six career games.
The Sabres could be without Tyler Myers, who departed Saturday with a lower-body injury. Patrick Kaleta left with an illness and won't travel to Boston, while Matt Moulson is also sick and missed Saturday's game.
Illness throughout the league has led to mumps concerns, and coach Ted Nolan said the team isn't ruling that out.
"The medical team will look at that," he said. "Right now they're just flu-like symptoms, I guess."
